Back on Tumblr after 5 years. Hello, old friend
thoughts
This man isnât happy â diabetic, overworked, alcoholic, tired, broke and broken. He didnât have a good life. Born to a large family, stopped schooling at 13, experienced multiple business failures, got cheated of his life savings by so-called friends, married a discontented wife, supports 4 kids, none of whom cared enough to say hi, nothing much to his name.
Life really is a vicious cycle.
His lack of an education meant that he could not communicate effectively in English, a serious disadvantage when it came to building a career, or understanding the endless documents that the government sends him regarding housing, loans, retirement, whatnots.
His lack of love in his early upbringing meant that his kids could not receive fatherly love, and his wife could not get his attention. Friends. They were his world. Wife and kids? They were his burdens, the source of his misery, the symbols of his endless need to work, work and work.
Instead of being part of his kidsâ happiness, they forego including him. Him, who gave them life, also brought them pain.
Imagine this: waking up at 3am, changing into school uniforms, getting bundled into the lorry. Napping in the vehicle till the deliveries have been made, and suddenly, they reach school at 6am. Carrying the goods and delivering them to stall owners in the school canteen, sitting around waiting for the morning bell to ring. At the end of school, taking a bus to the family stall, changing out of school uniform, and serving customers till whatever time it is. Great if you have time to get your homework done while youâre there. Going home, getting scolded for whatever misdeeds done, showering, cramping in a tiny bedroom with 3 other people, waking up at 3am.
We didnât cry over it. We didnât show emotions about it. My brothers and I simply went through with it. Because itâs our lives, itâs the way things were, are.
Of course, we received many privileges. Growing up, we had parties, we went out with our friends and we spent whatever cash we got. After the age of 16, we never worried about being reprimanded for reaching home past midnight.
This man, heâs like an oversized kid. Thinking about it now, he really does behave like one. Friends over family, because kids donât know how to prioritize any other way. Enjoyment over rest, because sleep is for the weak. Being juvenile over little things, glaring at people like they owe him a living, brushing off his wifeâs reminders and chiding.
I, I have a part-time job. Have had it since I graduated from junior college. Wow, itâs been 3 years? Pays me $12 an hour. Alongside the job, Iâm currently studying full-time in a local university. Other than for special occasions, like my birthday, I havenât really gotten allowances from him, or from my mum, in a long time. I eat, drink, shop and pay my bills with whatever I earn. I spend as many hours as I can in school, because to be honest? I hate being at home. I hate seeing whateverâs at home.
I started writing this to write about the man who so influences my life. But I donât know where this is going.
I, I have never had a relationship. I never tried. Itâs not that I donât know who I like, or that Iâve never liked anyone, I just never feel like I could give anyone the love they deserve. I knew what guys liked, and I knew how to be the opposite. I grew fat, my acne-covered face is also full of acne scars and I was always so strong, so independent. I didnât need a guy, thatâs what I demonstrated. I always lied and told my friends, nah, Iâm too young, weâre all too young, and we should focus on ourselves and not on getting attached to another human. As much as I believe that, I also didnât believe in myself.
How? Iâve never learnt to. My parents, they fight. Ah, all couples do. Do they punch each other? Push each other into glass doors and break those doors? Do they drink so much, get so intoxicated, they attempt to commit suicide in front of their kids? Even as their kids beg them not to? That was my dad by the way, my mum never did. The next day he woke up, itâs as if he had no memory of it.
We gave up. When they fought, we stayed in our rooms. We stopped retorting them. We stopped telling them about our days. They donât know the lives we lead. Every time we ask a simple question,
âWho closed the laptop?â
and the response we receive, itâs as if weâre the parents, and theyâre the kids.
âI only closed it, I didnât touch anything else!â
That not just answered the question, but begged another â why are you talking back as if we said you set fire to the books?
My mum, sheâs a frumpy woman. Itâs easy to get her upset. Mention money, or her husband, or permission to go out with friends. Anything triggers her actually. Because she has had a sad life, apparently. No friends, though she just had a holiday with 2 ladies sheâs known for 2 decades. No money, though her husband always, always gives in to her. No happiness, though she has a roof over head, living parents, living kids, living husband, a personal computer, whatever. However, I can get her. Her husband doesnât care anymore. Whether sheâs awake, asleep, happy, upset, out with friends, staying at home, he doesnât care. Unless sheâs stopping him from drinking with his friends. Then he cares. And that can really be miserable. Another reason why I donât look forward to marriage.
I donât want to write anymore. I donât want to think. Itâs too hard, Iâm tired.
Thatâs all for now, I guess.
stop this is honestly so cute
An event
An event today, how exciting.
An empty bus, an empty stomach. A packed bag, a packed mind.Â
Music, people, life. Equipment, crew, tasks.
There goes frowns, here comes chatter. There goes peace, here comes mindlessness.
Moving lips, unmoving thoughts. Muscle memory, verbal vomit, oh thatâs nice.
OH, THATâS NICE.Â
And itâs over. Brief connections, made more brief by alcohol. Oh, thatâs nice.
Unmoving lips, moving thoughts. Impromptu statements, a jab too hard on the shoulder.
Here comes frowns, there goes chatter. Here comes peace, there goes mindlessness.
The music stops, the people leave, the life is extinguished. The equipment packed, the crew worked, the tasks paused.
An empty bag, an empty mind. An empty bus, an empty stomach.
How exciting, an event tomorrow.
To: the people who broke me
I am 20, and I have never been in a relationship. I have never let myself have a crush on anyone for too long, because itâs heart-breaking. Everyone around me is feeling the love, but I donât. I donât believe in it. Itâs a story Iâve never shared with anyone. But I think, it has a lot to do with my barrier, and I donât know how to get over it.
I was in primary 6 and I was a proud girl. I believed a lot in what I could do, and that I would be successful. I thank my mum for my strong self-confidence, but also, it was my downfall. Back then, boys were cute. Every year, somehow, I would receive a confession about their love for me. In person, through a text, a call, a love letter. Oh, how cute. I remember one of them started crying halfway and ran away. But I always turned them down. I didnât care much for a relationship back then. Too young.
But of course, as a proud girl who received so much love, I wasnât really popular with girls. Keep in mind that I grew up with 3 brothers, and wasnât a dainty little princess. I was often ostracised, for many reasons. And I admit, I probably deserved to have been treated that way. I was domineering, self-righteous, and didnât try to make myself likeable. Being the classic teacherâs pet didnât help me either. One day, I received a text from an unknown number. Â
This person claimed to like me, but was too shy to reveal himself. I should have been cautious. I should ended the conversation there. But I was proud.
Every day, he would text me. Ask about my day, tell me he saw me, and be coy about his identity. I was enamoured.
A few weeks down, she revealed the truth. She was my junior by one year, and was goaded into the prank by her friends in my mother tongue class. They couldnât stand the likes of me, and decided to humiliate me. The original idea was to have a big reveal on April Foolâs Day, but the girl couldnât carry on the charade as she felt guilty.
When I found out, I really felt embarrassed. How could I have been so gullible? Why did I let myself fall so neatly into the trap? Then it made sense. Those people whom I thought were friends kept teasing me about it, even though I never shared with them any detail. They egged me on. They were having the time of their lives, while I got closer and closer to their goal.
It feels really insignificant, doesnât it? A 12-year-old being screwed over by people she trusted. We werenât close, but I didnât think they would go to such lengths to humiliate me. After all, they were older kids, probably 14 or 15, and I sort of looked up to them because they knew more than the rest of us, and were quite smart.
I never really trusted anyone anymore. Everyone was a long way away from knowing me. If I rejected anyone before, I absolutely avoided boys after it. I didnât give anyone the wrong idea, I kept my distance. 8 years down the road, Iâve succeeded. Not a single guy tried anything, and I didnât either. Or maybe it had to do with my bad skin. Actually, it probably had a lot to do with my bad skin. My mum always told me that no one would want me if I didnât take care of my skin, and the idea stuck. I didnât take care of my skin, I didnât spruce myself up. I was overweight to begin with, and I let myself be. I wasnât cute, and didnât try. Or you could say I tried really hard. To be unattractive, unnoticed, and to live in my own misery.
Nowadays, my mum laments that I used to care, I used to wear dresses, and used to muck around with makeup, learnt to dance, take care of my hair. Used to. Long ago. When I was young. Too young.
But itâs too late. My skin is as bad as ever. Iâve never learnt to love. And I donât know how to begin. So, congratulations, your plan succeeded. I have been humiliated thoroughly, and canât pick myself up.

This is more entertaining than it should be.
This is why I love Tumblr.

At Crossroads
We havenât changed. Our differences have simply finally surfaced. Quite sadly, Iâve always known that there is a fundamental problem in our friendship, but I let it manifest itself. I ignored the disaster that was looming, and now weâre at crossroads. I donât know how to help us move forward, you donât know how to approach me.
This year has been especially trying, as itâs the first time we have no reason to meet except if we actually make the effort to meet and stay connected. And truthfully, I like the days when you arenât on my mind.
Iâve always wondered whose problem it was. I feel exhausted just thinking about how I should talk to you, because you mistake a full stop for frustration, a lack of enthusiasm for not loving, and canât seem to talk about serious issues seriously. Not everything has to be punctuated with hahaha, or lol, or whatever else you use as a filler word. My life isnât a joke, you donât will away your insensitivity with a mere âhahahaâ. Sometimes, I think Iâm too serious, and thought that because of that, I canât see the fun in the things you do. But then I realised, we simply have different ideas of fun.
I thought seven years is a long time to know someone, but it turns out, we still donât understand each other. If we did, maybe we wouldnât be here, maybe we would have been content with simply saying hi when we cross paths and then awkwardly saying bye as we move on with our lives.
Love, is a big word. I used to be very resistant to using this word, at whim, to describe what I feel for you. Yes, you are a precious friend, I am unimaginably protective of you and I care for you, and maybe that is love. But declaring it so often, I feel empty saying it. It has lost its meaning. But you like it, you like it when I say I love you, because you get so insecure when I disconnect for days and weeks on end, and thatâs the way I am with any other person. But your delicate heart would tell you that itâs because I hate you, which is understandable, because youâre the kind that needs comfort and assurance. Which is why I stopped resisting saying I love you. Do you see my conundrum?
But I think, you lost me when you declared that Iâm your best friend, and I felt obliged to agree. I felt obliged. What a terrible feeling. But that is the word that has been part of my friendship with you. Obligation. You lost me at the beginning.Maybe thatâs why thereâs nothing to go back to, nothing to remind ourselves why we grew close, nothing to explain âusâ.
Over all these years, all I can think of is how we were brought together by circumstances, which is, in itself, a work of fate. I have never seen you as the one I would choose, at any given time, I had felt closer with other friends than with you. I felt connected with them in the least, where I could understand their thoughts, and they can decipher mine. But you have always been a puzzle to me, one that I rarely solve.Â
With all these complaining, I am more likely an awful friend than you. After all, what Sally says about Susie, says more about Sally than Susie.Â
No, my friendship status isn't about you.
thereâÂÂs this rock at my uni that anyone can paint on whenever they want and this is what someone painted on it today and i know i am typing in lowercase but i was legit freaking out when i saw it

Ohana means family. Family means nobody gets left behind, or forgotten.
After Ann Coulter referred to President Obama as a âretardâ in a tweet during Monday nightâs presidential debate, Special Olympics athlete and global messenger John Franklin Stephens penned her this open letter:
Dear Ann Coulter, Come on Ms. Coulter, you arenât dumb and you arenât shallow. So why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult? Iâm a 30 year old man with Down syndrome who has struggled with the publicâs perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow. I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you. In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night. I thought first of asking whether you meant to describe the President as someone who was bullied as a child by people like you, but rose above it to find a way to succeed in life as many of my fellow Special Olympians have. Then I wondered if you meant to describe him as someone who has to struggle to be thoughtful about everything he says, as everyone else races from one snarkey sound bite to the next. Finally, I wondered if you meant to degrade him as someone who is likely to receive bad health care, live in low grade housing with very little income and still manages to see life as a wonderful gift. Because, Ms. Coulter, that is who we are â and much, much more. After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me. You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV. I have to wonder if you considered other hateful words but recoiled from the backlash. Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor. No one overcomes more than we do and still loves life so much. Come join us someday at Special Olympics. See if you can walk away with your heart unchanged.
A friend you havenât made yet,
John Franklin Stephens
