i think i make some good points so keep reading if you want to

2x11 spoilers?

a very large theme of ted lasso is that there's a source* to everyone's behavior.

* a past experience, a trauma, a betrayal

i think the situation of nate is an interesting one.

in earlier seasons we've seen shitty behavior resolved fairly quickly (or at least with enough episodes available that we aren't left on cliffhangers of said behavior)

• jaime tartt's bullying, general selfishness, forgiven through actions of teamwork, of apologies, of self-improvement, of knowing of his father's abuse

• rebecca welton's intentional manipulation, forgiven through her guilt, her confession to ted, her apology to higgins, her self-improvement, the knowledge of her ex-husband's abuse

and now nate is going through his own arc, his being delayed by the fact that he was bullied into silence most, if not all, of his life.

his arc is out of order, compared to the previous two characters.

instead of

1) bad action(s)

2) viewers are informed of character's trauma (familial abuse)

3) redemption

nate is displaying

1) viewers are informed of character's trauma (familial, peer abuse)

2) bad action(s)

3) ?

this differing sequence of events leads viewers to become defensive. we've already seen his abuse, some have forgotten about it, and then we are all shown how abuse can fester negatively in social situations. nate doesn't have a redemption yet, so it is easy to hate his character.

BUT if ted lasso has taught me anything, it is to be patient with those who are hurting.

to be curious (why is nate doing this?)

not judgmental (nate is a raging piece of shit i hope he dies)

i'm not saying to forgive him. i am not saying nate's actions are in any way okay.

i am saying that his mistreatment is coming from a place of hurt, and he has not yet been given the time to redeem himself and take accountability.

i think this show is testing its viewers in quite a brilliant way

can we apply ted's lasso's themes to the way we react to nate's inappropriate betrayal? or will we immediately lash out against nate?

it is not my intention to be condescending, i just found the reaction to 2x11 ironic considering what this show has presented.

Okay but teacher Grace on Erid having very little say in which kids get filtered into his class, though he is aware that the selection process is super specific and that most of the kids he gets are high performers with star academics and some even with influential parents. He isn't quite comfortable enough with Eridian culture yet to object to the selection process and make it more inclusive, however. That is, until he learns about the special needs kids.

Obviously, there are Eridian kids with special needs, and a few of them even filter into his classes. But one specific type of special needs kid has never shown up in his classes, and the only reason he even learned of the condition is because Rocky and Adrien's first pebble has the condition.

It's initially quite a struggle for them to deal with, and Grace sympathizes of course, because the child will apparently have huge learning and academic struggles and will likely never be able to live on their own. That is, until he learns the details of the disability.

Basically, it's a condition where the part of the Eridian brain that gives them their eidetic memory isn't fully developed, and so these kids just... can't remember things the way most eridians do. And in a culture where an eidetic memory is the norm, all things cater to that, so not having that is actually a massive disability.

But Grace is like, so... this kid just learns the same way a human does, or something like. Which is nothing new to him, though he is somewhat boggled at how much Rocky and Adrian struggle with their infant and their "slow" learning curve, even as far as initial developmental stages. Grace, on the other hand, simply treats the kid the same way he would a human infant, and Rocky and Adrien are impressed with his patience.

But, through this, it occurs to Grace that there must be other kids out there with this disability who likely aren't getting the attention and chances in life that they deserve, because Eridian culture is particularly hostile toward this disability, and actively views those with it as unable to function in regular society.

So Grace demands that a special course be put together where he teaches kids with this disability specifically. Rocky is hesitant, as most kids with this disability are home schooled and kind of... kept shut away. But Grace insists and as one of Erid's saviors, he gets what he wants eventually.

His first class is super small, maybe only three kids because so few parents were willing to advertise that their children have this disability. And because of the stigma around it, even those who agreed to it are super unsure and want to be present during the lessons, perhaps paranoid about the impression it will leave on Savior Grace, who is so accustomed to only teaching the most gifted students.

But Grace knows exactly how to deal with these kids. Some of them have varying degrees of function when it comes to their memory banks, which isn't so unlike teaching kids on earth. And so Grace is able to introduce all these tools and teaching techniques that were previously unheard of on Erid (though very normal on Earth) like having textbooks for reference with you at all times and having strategies that are less focused on memorization for understanding, and providing these kids with tools like calculators and teaching them the art of taking notes to look back on, etc etc.

Suddenly, with all these tools that most Eridians don't need, these kids are learning at a much faster rate, and succeeding with the help of all their little tools. And because so many normal eridians are ignorant of Grace's actual biology, it's shocking to them that Savior Grace doesn't have an eidetic memory either (shocking to everyone but Rocky anyway)--that his brain functions quite similarly in capacity to these "disabled" children.

Once this news gets around, suddenly there's more kids in his special classes, and there's all kinds of discourse being inflamed because the real reason these kids can't live on their own or function is lack of support from Eridian society.

If Savior Grace, who is well respected as a genius in his own right amongst the Eridians, can function so successfully, they why can't these kids?

I dunno, I just think it's an interesting premise.

It was an empty threat, and Healy knew it. He'd be the last person to leave the boys alone with another drunk. March knew it, too, yet the threat landed. Healy had sobered him up more effectively in one sentence than the smattering of detox centers had over decades.

Because Healy would be gone, wouldn't he?

Sure, he'd be in the house-- he'd cook a subpar dinner for the family, and entertain Ryland's endless questions pertaining to his 'adult job'. He'd regale Colt with backstories to every scar on his body, the young boy fascinated that someone with a violent history chose not to extend it to their living room. He'd leave a few more coins than necessary on the kitchen table for Court-- lunch-money-turned-allowance stacked every night before bed.

Healy would continue to leave evidence of himself all over the house, a perfect crime scene of an intimate partnership crumbling. March wouldn't. The laundry would get done, loads noticeably absent of garish dress shirts. The fridge would be stocked, now lacking leftovers from dive bars and shitty diners. The bills would be paid with checks addressed only to a Mr. Jackson Healy.

After all, March reasoned, you don't have to get dressed if you don't have a job. You don't have to eat when a drink lets you sleep through the hunger.

So, yes, Healy would stay. But Jackson... His Jack would be gone.

Cheeky smiles reserved for March, a response to their obnoxious, but ultimately harmless, banter, would turn into the glances of suspicion he continues to receive from Ryland. His falling face of disappointment- eerily similar to Court's blank, anticipating gaze that first belonged to Holly- would haunt him. Or maybe he wouldn't be looked at at all. Maybe Healy would avoid him, put his head down and shoulder by like Colt had learned to do months, years, ago.

Jackson's side of the bed would go cold, the man sentencing himself to their leather recliner. Holland's side would cool, too, as his skin wrinkled in tepid water, the porcelain of the bath a close friend again.

Jackson would become another ghost in the graveyard of his life-- alongside Holly, alongside Amelia. Alongside his wife.

Eventually, Holland would become one, too. He probably already has.

for some context: coltland gentry au, all three boys were relocated to their mother's next of kin (march) after their father's arrest. march and healy coparent with varying degrees of success. this fic takes place in the late 1980s shortly after the kids have been rehomed. wanted to explore the concept of a "nice drunk" still being traumatic (guess what i'm going thru at home at the moment 💀) and a parent being willing to overcome it for their family.

march is in his mid 40s, healy in his early 60s, holly is in her mid 20s (out of the house? maybe freshly out of college?), court is around 15, twins are about 8

Reasons my human has cried:

* New student, very small. Grace said it was pebble. Pebble is small Earth rock. Pebble likes name.

* He found out Eridians have no gender rules.

* Students brought him mineral sample. After he stopped crying he said he loves show-and-tell game. Human naming conventions oddly literal.

* I told him Earthsun grew bright.

* I took him up atop atmosphere bypass elevator to look at stars.

* He woke up from nap and found me still with him. I did not wait on his chest; he says I am heavy like “elephant” and he “couldn’t breathe.” I laid my arm over him instead, kept him close, feeling safe. He said “cuddle” was warm.

* Before class he heard younglings singing.

* He has plants in house from sprouts on ship. Plant grew “bud.”

* Engineers got seawater temperature right. He took off shoes and stood in water, sighing. He didn’t care about pants getting damp. Cried until shirt was also damp. Humans very endlessly wet.

* He missed “Doritos.”

* Adrian helped food scientists make taumoeba dried paste. Made it crunchy after heating. We fused it into triangle form. Told him it was Tauritos. That made him laugh-cry. Laugh-cry is rare and precious.

* He remembered Eridians have no gender rules.

* We made him celebration outfit. Used metals he calls pretty. He can see frequencies named “colorful” and “shiny.” These make humans happiest.

* I gave him hug when he wasn’t expecting it. Easier to hug close now with exosuit. Hug when Grace sitting down so he does not fall over.

* Told him to think long time, stay with me as long as he can.

the project hail mary soundtrack is a love letter not only to humanity but to choirs. as a choir singer it warms my heart for voices to be utilized to represent the humanness of this story. singing is so HUMAN!!! we sing to our children we sing for joy and we sing to mourn and it all comes from the centers of our bodies, right from the gut where we FEEL things!!! i love feeling things!!!

i have half a mind to edit some scenes to my favorite choral arrangements like Nine Hundred Miles by Philip E Silvey or Fire by Katerina Gimon or When David Heard by Eric Whitacre. real spirited and gritty and sad stuff.

Javadi and Mohan both perfectly showed the inevitable consequence of working under a critical and unstable boss: they bow out instead of fighting another unwinnable fight

These women have taken beating after beating (from their shift but also from Robby specifically), and when they try and find some balance by choosing their battles, Robby equates that to total catastrophic failure. It's one thing to express some disappointment over not "rising to the challenge," but it's another to suggest that BOTH of these smart, talented doctors would give up completely and MOVE TO A DIFFERENT SPECIALTY just because they choose to have a moment of rest instead of pushing into martyrdom

Robby's desperately afraid of leaving the ED but also just as afraid of his peers being their own people. He's so anxiously codependent with "running" the ED that he's basically suffocating all of them, because them being their own people and coming into their own confidence means there's no one left for him to save - no one left to depend on him.

[again, all of this said alongside the backdrop of Robby himself struggling with his own burnout, martyrdom, and isolation. Clearly he's struggling right now - has been for a while - so this isn't a condemnation of his entire character, more of the pot finally boiling over... :/ ]
