“Yes, I am Prince Imery,” the boy beamed, confident yet not too proud. Something about this man gave off a comforting vibe that grabbed his attention. Anyone could pass through the hall without his noticing, as would usually happen. This time he felt compelled to turn his head and approach. Regardless, Imery wasn’t suspicious, only curious. 

“Are you a friend of my father’s?” he asked as he looked the man over. He certainly was a new face, nor someone he had ever seen amongst other courtiers. Yet, he must have been one to be able to enter the castle. 

    So, he was the young prince. This made Ahai smile brightly. He walked on over to him and, though he wanted to knee down, he refrained from doing so.

    He needed to give the boy a good reason to be there as not to seem suspicious- but children were good at keeping secrets at times. “I am a friend to all who are kind. You father, and you yourself.” Ahai half-lied. “I am simply looking around the castle because she is so beautiful. I actually was interesting in meeting you. Are you aware that you will one day be King? Are you excited for it?”

Watching airships from the castle was a favorite of the little eight year old prince. The way they floated through the air, rather how they manged to do so, the mechanics within it, intrigued him at such a tender age. One day, he would build one himself, he told himself. He was determined to design it, build it, inside and out, everything, he wanted to do it all himself.

The only thing that could possibly steal his attention was an unfamiliar figure that happened to pass behind him. Looking over his shoulder, head titled, he searched memory for who they could possibly be. A friend of the King perhaps? A visitor? How else would they enter the castle? Hopping from the cushioned widow bay seating, the curious boy hesitantly approached the man, standing mere feet behind from him.

“Who are you?” asked the child, voice small and regal. Maybe he was here for the masquerade? A treaty from another land? Questions swam his mind as he waited for an answer.

    Ahai was still young and a little reckless. He didn’t mind getting caught as long as he could go out and explore the worlds. This one in particular was so fascinating to him-- there were so many contraptions with open circuits so people could see how everything worked on the inside. Ahai loved the aesthetic. He wondered if the people in this world thought different to have such a unique way of life.

    He found himself wandering the halls of the castle. He knew that the rule of the land likely had much influence on their people. There wasn’t much background he got before diving right in. He examined every detail of the hall as he walked through. The trim, the tables, the doors, the tile...

    At one point he heard a child’s voice call to him and he turned. He stood up straight and confident with his hands folded behind his back. He smiled to the boy. “My name is Ahai. Are you... the young prince?”

“I suppose that it’s good that I’ve already been expanding my talents. Warding is definitely next on what I want to learn.” Especially since he could easily work his talents in with the spells. Maybe with some candles as well… They always worked as a source of pure energy, Leilani has found.

But his attention would soon be redirected, namely by the indirect confession that Ahai was, indeed, inhuman. He couldn’t help it; The witch popped up with a rather excited look on his face. “I knew it! You’re not human, are you?” There was a pause, a realization occurring to him. “Wait… Sync with witches? Does that mean that normal humans are unable to see you?”

    Ahai focused on stones that amplified his powers as a celestial being. He often needed to lie low and stay undetected and used his knowledge of crystals to do so. Opal was especially good at invisibility and aiding his celestial powers while tuned down.

    The angel chuckled, glad that the other didn’t have a negative reaction to finding out he was inhuman. Though a witch, even a novice, would probably feel something off around him; not in a bad way. He nodded to Leilani as he smirked. “You’re right, I’m not human. My kind exist naturally at a very high vibe, so lowering it enough to sync to connect and match a human can be difficult. Most people will be unaware of my presence and think nothing of it.  

    “Witches and humans with any magical inclination are slightly higher vibe and are much more open-minded, allowing me to sync with them. Other things--” Ahai gestured to the burning sage, “--can also help two people tune into each other.”

Even with second-hand knowledge, Leilani was still delighted. Especially to hear the different types of crystals that Ahai had. There certainly did seem to be a theme there; If he remembered right, opal, topaz, and jasper all had protective properties, didn’t they?

“It can be difficult, especially after the witch hunts. Even my mom tends to be a bit more secretive than I am.” His head tilted a bit as Ahai pulled out the notebook, not expecting him to take notes right then and there… But, hey, to each their own. “Personally, I fancy myself a ‘kitchen witch’. My craft works best with herbs and teas. Not to mention it’s easier to help others when you don’t have to do elaborate rituals for them.”

“But it seems like witchcraft is making a reappearance. You wouldn’t believe the forums I’ve seen online. Not quite the same as having a coven, but we’re still able to share spells and recipes.”

    Ahai slipped the notebook back into his pocket to listen to Leilani speak. He furrowed his brows at the mention of witch hunts. “It is not foreign to me the nature of the general population to witches. It amazes me that they try to hurt what is trying to help them-- I blame ignorance and fear of what they do not know.” But the angel quickly shook this off to give a soft smile. He liked to focus on the good of humans and not the bad. That was the whole point of being an angel, was it not? “It is good you have a specialization. Just don’t be afraid to try something new.”

    The internet was still something Ahai was getting used to. He preferred using books for his research but he really needed to get his hands on a laptop soon. “Hm... if that is the case then I may have to look into it. I’d truly like to see witchcraft become more widely accepted. Perhaps then it would be easier for me to make an appearance more often. I find it easier to tune down and sync with witches since their minds are so open despite our differences.”

“Oh! Of course…!” Why hadn’t he thought of that before? Besides the fact that crystals weren’t really his specialty. But the two that the other brought up honestly would be perfect, especially working in the funeral home. “You’re right that topaz is lovely, but I think hematite would be best. Especially if I were to give it to those who are mourning. If I remember correctly, it’s particularly useful in ridding of negative energies, right?”

Of course, topaz would be nice for those who are particularly volatile… It took Leilani a moment to notice the fiery gem that the visitor wore, looking at it in interest. Definitely intriguing. He knew opals could be unpredictable, so for someone to still seem so in tune while wearing it?

“My name is Leilani,” he said after a moment, smiling brightly at the other. “It’s really rare to meet someone who knows about their crystals, especially around here.”

    “Both are good at doing that, although hematite tends to be stronger from my experience.” He was getting excited because the other was excited, though he didn’t show it outwardly so much. They were syncing up thanks to this newfound connection.

    Ahai put his hand to his heart and bowed his head. “Leilani, what a wonderful name. Where I’m from, they call me Ahai; certainly not from around here. I’ve had many experiences with crystals in the past. Most of these were second-hand but I do carry my trusty opal with me. I switch it out often with a jasper ring. I also have a wonderful topaz necklace at my residence.

    “I’m surprised to find anyone still interested in any sort of witchcraft in this age. I thought it died down some time ago but I am pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong. I must take notes on this when I get the chance.” Ahai put a hand to his chin and looked down at his foot. He quickly took out a pocket notebook with a pen and scribbled ‘witchcraft? crystals and herbs’.

Was it just him, or did this visitor seem more than human? It certainly seemed like it. And his mother always told him to go with his gut. Even then, the way the stranger was responding made him hopeful; Even if his coworkers and friends accepted his idiosyncrasies, they rarely were willing to talk about them. But not this man.

It actually made Leilani a little happy. The stranger understood.

“It was the same here, when I first started working. But I’m glad you’re able to have some relief here.” Though he couldn’t help but wonder what the other did, to make visits to funeral homes a common thing. “I do have a few other practices, though.” The mortician reached under his shirt, pulling out a pair of crystals; A quartz and amethyst, to be specific. “I’m more inclined towards using herbs, but I can’t deny the usefulness of crystals.”

    Indeed, simply being in the place made Ahai feel that his vibe was tuning up, so much to the point where he felt like blinking would make him slip into another plane. Though he was able to control it well enough to stay grounded in front of the other. It would be a dead giveaway if he slipped away.

    The sight of the crystals made Ahai’s smile instead turn into a smirk for a moment. This is what he was hoping to see. “Ah, good choices for someone working in a place like this. I’m sure they bring you great balance. Might I suggest topaz or hematite as well? Though I may be partial to topaz-- it is such a beautiful crystal.” The angel hummed in satisfaction at his discovery. He put his middle finger to his chin to show off the ring on it. It was a large gold ring with a fire opal on it.

Death certainly was a sad business to deal in; No matter how families and friends coped with their losses, grief was still something that could weigh heavy. Whether on the soul or in the air, it was the least Leilani could do to help it feel a little lighter.

It was something that he had discovered. People healed a bit easier when the grief couldn’t suffocate them, especially grief from others.

He never quite expected it to be noticeable to others, though.

The book he’d been reading lowered a bit as he noticed the visitor, a faint smile appearing across his face. “I definitely try,” Leilani admitted, nodding to the small bundle of sage next to him. It was still burning a bit in the ash tray, a thin wisp of smoke floating above it. “I like to think this place as the start of healing. Something a bit difficult to do if bad energies built up over time.”

    Ahai smiled cheerfully at the other then looked to the bundle of sage himself. It was so rare for humans these days to appreciate the cleansing effects that sage had; it had been used in traditions of generations prior but fell out of practice. Perhaps that was one reason there was so much negativity in the world and such a stigma around death. There was no doubt that the simple addition of sage in the building helped to calm many without their realizing.

    Though, the human did realize that this is what it was for. The way he spoke of it made Ahai inclined to believe he was a witch, but he didn’t jump to conclusions without sufficient evidence.

    “Of course-- although many see it as a start of suffering. A reminder of mortality is never a nice one. A simple bit of sage is enough to combat that. I’ve been to many a morgue and the energy always makes me feel like I’m choking.” He was confident ( or hopeful, at least ) the other would understand. “Do you do other practices similar to this, perhaps?”

    The topic of death in regards to humans was one of the most interesting topics to Ahai. There was such a wide array of reactions to it as well as traditions to treating the dead spirit and the body. Of course, it changed over time and with convenience. He’s seen bodies thrown into a ditch with no regard and set aflame. He has also seen intricate mournings that involve bathing a body, redressing it, stopping clocks, covering mirrors, wearing black, and vowing silence for a week. 

    Of course, it was Ahai’s job to learn as much as he could about humans in general, so when there was someone out of the ordinary he investigated thoroughly. This usually entailed approaching a human and asking questions under a guise. Though Ahai hated doing this as it felt inorganic.

    But Ahai felt he could make this work very well given the nature of this human. So one day he went to him in his workplace. The burning sage made Ahai take a deep breath and put him at ease-- it was one of the most wonderful smells.

    “Forgive me, but I felt a strange energy from here and wanted to investigate. It feels calmer here than most places.”

    He always watches people from a distance. When there’s trouble, he stands there to see if an onlooker will help. He’s watched as firefighters tamed a wild house fire. He’s watched people march down streets in protest and fight back against the law. He’s watched as two people go from strangers to good friends in one meeting at a bar. He’s watched as a child waved good-bye to his parents as he went off to his first day of school. 

    Even now as he sits off the side of his bike he waits.

    And he watches.

    It’s particularly cloudy, light showers on and off throughout the day. It makes the air thick and humid so everything feels sticky. Luckily it’s not too hot to the point where it’s unbearable. So it wasn’t too out of the ordinary for anyone to be wearing jeans and a long sleeve jacket like Ahai; though he could affirm that his clothes were much more breathable than average. 

    He had been eyeing “ Butterfly Jewelers ” for quite some time, admittedly. The thought of butterflies gave him butterflies in his stomach- although he understood this meant anxiousness, butterflies were such beautiful insects that they couldn’t make him anything but happy. And Ahai wasn’t exactly on the hunt for new jewelry but it never hurt to buy something new. 

    Finally one day he brought himself in to change things up. He was captivated by the branch-like pipes that stretched throughout and the necklaces above that hung like drops. Not moments after walking in, he was already focused on a gold chain with an amber colored imperial topaz.
