MURASTE COTTAGE

Drawing inspiration from traditional Estonian customs, the Muraste Cottage is a modern forest dwelling. The home consists of three units. The two housing the main living area and the bedroom are directly linked. A central terrace connects the main house to the detached sauna. While the former’s facade is left in its natural state, the sauna is set apart with a tar oil finish. The contemporary approach continues in the interior with white walls and minimal furnishings. North-facing panels are fitted with large glazed panels, revealing views of the Baltic Sea.

When people ask me, “Why do you want to adopt teenagers?” I always answer, “Because you asked like that.”

I’m real over it. If I become a foster mom to a 17 year old kid and I get the privilege of the option to adopt them? You better believe I am legally making that kid mine.

“They’ll be a legal adult in no time, why spend the money to adopt? They’ll be aged out of the system.”

There’s no aging out of family, Marvin.

“They might be rebellious or smoke or do drugs or steal things! What if they won’t listen to you?”

Then I guess I’ll have to step up and do some fruxking parenting, Stanley.

“You want to adopt problem children then?”

All. Children. Are. Problem. Children. If you’re not prepared to deal with the fact that at some point, any child ever, whether you birthed them yourself or adopted them at any age, could become a problem? Then you are NOT ready to have children, and should really just step off and let the people who actually want to be parents live in peace with their kids.

HOUSE ON THE STONE

Sited on a rocky lot in Mexico City, the House on the Stone borrows from the landscape with its solid facade. The home is comprised of a series of stacked boxes. Rising three stories, the rugged cladding gives the modern form a monolithic presence. The interior mimics its stone surroundings but adds a touch of warmth with wood paneling. While the front elevation is mostly closed off, the rear is encased in glass, opening the interior to views of the garden and the highlighting feature — a 15-meter-high stone wall.

My partner is an immigrant from the UK and still holds his citizenship. At a recent event, an acquaintance talked about how many “immigrants” get jobs over “Canadians” and they shouldn’t allowed to be management (which my partner is). My partner reaches across the table and goes “Hi, immigrant here!” and she goes “Oh I didn’t mean immigrants like you…” And you can so tell they just mean “brown people” or “Asian people” but they pretend it’s about jobs and shit.

That’s the same with my family. We were war immigrants from the soviet union and now live in Germany. Now the syrians are here because they also have war, and people keep asking me why I’m defending them so mercilessly. And when I tell them that my family (that is still alive) has gone through the same bullshit. But they insist that both scenarios are completely different. They’re not different, you’re just racist.

We naturally put millionaires and billionaires in the same general class of person, but the only reason to do that is because the words are similar. Since these aren’t numbers we can actually visualize, it’s important to understand what a billion of something is. To travel a million inches, you’d have to travel from the Southern-most tip of Manhattan and go to the Bronx. To travel a billion inches, you’d have to fly from New York to Shanghai twice. A million seconds is a little over 11 days. A billion seconds is nearly 32 years. A million ounces is about the weight of a train car. A billion ounces is 4.5 Eiffel Towers. Use these to conceptualize what the difference between a millionaire and a billionaire is, and the absurd amount of wealth we’re talking about.
