My mom’s only negative reaction to my sibling coming out as enby was being furious that they didn’t wait for her to be in town visiting to paint their nails for the first time. As she phrased it, “that’s my job as your mom to teach you and you just went to YouTube to learn.”

They did have a salon session together when she next visited and bonded over sib learning just how crappy cheap nail polish is.

I’ll also say, as a big sister nothing has been more fun than getting to chime in with advice as they explore more feminine forms of gender expression. I got to buy them a necklace as a souvenir on vacation and I was so excited thinking about what style of jewelry they’d like.

Did it take a moment for both my mom and I to mentally adjust to the news of their gender identity? Yes, I won’t lie. It came as a surprise especially because they live in another city, so we didn’t experience the exploration and realization part of the process with them.

However, it really wasn’t hard to work through those feelings privately, be supportive of them, and very quickly move onto realizing “Oh, now I get surprise bonus first-time moments with this person I love!”

they've told me the gossip which is that a few years back a 70 yr old man collapsed the bridge at the end of my road by driving his tractor over it, lost his tractor in the river, climbed back up the cliff unscathed, walked an hour home, and then the whole road fell into disrepair and all the campgrounds closed and the once popular waterfall down the road became obscure and secret. so like, be the change you want to see in the world. collapse a bridge to chase out the tourists. also you can lose widespread knowledge in under 10 years if one old man collapses a bridge
