What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bush’s war on Iraq, so I think that.

I know it must have been the clinton/lewinsky scandal, but I did not know what was happening. I just named my imaginary friend Monica Lewinsky as a VERY small child (I must have heard the name and thought it sounded magical?), which was challenging for the adults in my life when I would talk about her in public.

I will be uploading Buffy and Charmed too eventually once I bump my Google Drive storage space up to 5TB but those two can usually be found everywhere so it’s not that much of an issue that they’re not uploaded yet.

If it’s female or WLW representation, I care about it. However, it’s usually just action/adventure, fantasy and supernatural I watch for myself. South Of Nowhere is an outlier just because it’s so god damn well written/acted and the WLW ship/couple in it are the lead characters.

I will not let ANY female and WLW media fall off into obscurity. We deserve to be represented too and there are legions of us (new and old generation) who need it.

i do have to say that no matter how shitty any sort of media is or how shitty your own creations are. always remember

at some point in your life you will be boiling fruit, water, sugar, and lemon juice in a pot to make a syrup or jam. the instructions will tell you to simmer for a certain amt of time. your timer will go off and you will look at the pot and go, "hm, this doesn't look thick enough. maybe i'll let it go for another 10 minutes." this is the devil speaking. it's only so liquid right now because it is at boiling point. it will thicken when it cools down. learn from the follies of my youth and do not let this happen to you

"these don't seem cooked enough," you will think to yourself, "i should place them back into the oven until their edges are nice and golden." this is the devil talking. this is how you get dry, overdone cookies. the cookies will continue to bake on the warm sheet for several more minutes and then harden up after sitting on a rack for a while. trust the process. trust the process.
