I thought of moving away from stripes as a different approach for a pride flag, seeing as most, if not all, were composed of stripes in one way or another. The compass rose in the middle is a symbol of how we all experience attraction in different ways (this isn’t really symbolic of any specific plane or planes of attraction), as I think it would be central to a flag that represents an entire spectrum of identities to have something that symbolizes such an idea.
I thought it was best to stick to the black/grey/white/green/purple as I think it would be counter-intuitive to introduce another color scheme. After all, this is a flag that is supposed to communicate to others that it includes all ace and aro people, so changing it up would just be more confusing. The green and purple are on opposite sides of the quadrant to show that asexuality and aromanticism are their own separate and independent identities, with both the black and grey quadrants connecting them to represent the aroace and grey aspec communities, respectively.
My hope is that this flag can be used for a variety of purposes, including being a unifying flag that represents the aspec community as a whole, and doesn’t attempt to sweep one community aside. Perhaps even used in place of the ace and aro flags to represent the aspec community as a whole. I hope that this flag, or any aspec flag for that matter, when flown says this:
We are welcoming to all aspec identities
This is a safe space for all people who identify as aspec
We understand that ace and aro identities are their own independent identities, and that we respect someone’s alloromantic or allosexual identity in tandem with their aspec identity
We also understand that sexual and romantic identity exists on a spectrum, and we recognize those with grey aspec, demi, or microlabel identities as a part of our community
We also recognize the aroace-spec community, of those whose lack of attraction intersects with aromanticism and asexuality, and how there are those who experience this with differing levels of attraction
Of course, I can’t stop someone from using this flag who will ignore those points, but I hope that there will be at least some who take these into account.
Lastly, this is the first time this flag has gone public, so I ask that you simply give me credit. No need to tag me, just at least give me a little shoutout. And you have permission to use this in pride merch without asking me, just in case there was ambiguity.
