Leyla Polat and Ahmet Arslan were two people who weren’t cut out to reproduce, but one chilly night in November, they were given their only daughter, Aysel. Her mother was a socialite and her father was a high-powered lawyer. On paper, they were the perfect family. Behind closed doors told a different story, and Leyla and Ahmet were the proof that sexual chemistry wasn’t a good basis for a marriage. They divorced when Aysel was four and their custody battle was messy. Leyla had full custody and Ahmet all too happily paid alimony and child support. Their custody arrangement entailed every other weekend and every other holiday, but Ahmet never had time for his daughter. Any time spent together was a photo op or to prove he was a ‘family’ man.

The only time Aysel ever had Ahmet’s attention was when she did something he wanted or achieved something that reflected well on him. When she was accepted into some of the country’s top universities from prep school, it was the first time he gave her options. And despite all of her anger towards him, having his attention and approval had felt…good. Aysel graduated at the top of her class from Yale with honors and she had her pick of law schools, from Harvard to Stanford. She had a near perfect LSAT score, but she ultimately selected Stanford University. She picked criminal defense as her specialty and it was there that her life took another hard turn, this time for the better. With her grades, family’s name, and strategic, chess-like mind, she had her pick of internships and potential jobs in any law firm she came across.

Aysel soon found she lacked the necessary stomach for being a criminal defense attorney on top of her resentment toward Ahmet. An internship with a firm of an old colleague of his had solidified this choice when a truly disgusting person was found not guilty from a discovery she made. Instead, she pursued the ludicrous world of business law and excelled. She graduated from law school at the top of her class and passed the California bar exam in the top three percent. Upon a move back to New York and passing that bar exam as well, a night of too much whiskey and a dart with a crumpled-up atlas decided her fate: Washington. Even if Aysel wasn’t the most spontaneous person, she craved a chance to break from her family’s reputation and start out on her own.

She had practically ran down the concourse to meet Aysel when her plane at landed at the airport that afternoon. Vacation was just what she needed but being gone so long made her miss her best friend more than she expected to. “I’m jet lagged as hell but I need a drink because I sat next to a toddler who was crying the whole time.” Kacie whined as she got into the car with Aysel and leaned back against the seat. Thankfully the Drunken Dragon wasn’t far and they could be there quickly. “Tell me everything I missed in the last three weeks.”

Hearing about her best friend’s adventures reminded Aysel of how pitifully far she had fallen behind by way of travel. Money was nice and the security was there, but she missed waking up in a foreign country. She missed being hungover in a first-class seat wrapped in a plush robe. Or fighting off the said hangover with a sleep mask and a glass of cheap champagne in a real glass.

“I won a client for my firm and made a quarter of a million dollars before taxes. That’s really it. All I did was work and make money and seriously considered getting a cat,” she admitted.

Verona carried her portfolio in her hands as she stared outside the cat café. She had just finished a meeting for her artwork and it had gone incredibly well. So much so that the  more positive and optimistic part of her that had been in hiding due to stress had come springing forward. She was honestly in an amazing mood and when she was happy, she had a habit of being impulsive. “ I shouldn’t get another cat should I?” Verona replied to the person next to her. “ But this little guy is so cute and maybe Vincent wants to be a big brother. I haven’t asked him, but he might have fun with a friend other than me and my paintbrushes”

Cat cafes were something that seemingly never was supposed to go together, but Aysel found herself ruffling her fingers through the dark grey fur of a kitten while sipping on a latte. The kitten happily purred as manicured fingers rubbed its face and dipped to scratch under its chin. While she worked insane hours, who knew? Maybe it was just the thing to keep her company and make her work less. 

“I’m the last person one should ask, honestly,” Aysel admitted. Though it was a little tempting to adopt one for herself. She certainly had the room. “I have no pets.”

Vaughn had finally pulled himself away from the bar and was walking around with a drink in his hand and socializing. He still felt new to the city, so any chance to meet another person was always a good option for the former fighter. He looked of the side of the boat looking at the water below, before being pulled from his thoughts by a comment. 

“ Special kind of assholes honestly. “ Vaughn replied shaking his head. He didn’t have relationships but if he did, he wouldn’t treat people like that. At least have some grace and morality in how you treat others. “ They’re gonna be stuck with them this whole time even if they separate. There are only so many places to go”

“It’s a bit like your significant other playing your ‘song’ to break up with you in junior high,” she commented. Aysel wouldn’t put it past anyone to attempt to ruin a holiday for someone else. Quite a few people really were that damn narcissistic. “It’s juvenile shit, honestly. They look way older than junior high age.”

Aksel blushed and smiled. “ Thank you and thank you for just being here for me as a lawyer and a friend. You really are one a million. The way you have kept everything so quiet, I am really grateful for all you do for me.” He said and then nodded at the dress. “ It really suits you, I mean you look like a movie star.” He wasn’t lying, she looked stunning. “Aww Thanks. I just wanted to dress up.” He chuckled and then spotted Matt over at the dessert stand. “ See the hot guy eyeing up the cakes. That’s my man. He is a firefighter. His name is Matt Pretty awesome in everyway if you ask me, but don’t tell him I said that.” He giggled. “ You with anyone tonight?”

“I’m here for you anytime, whether you need a lawyer or a friend,” she told him sincerely. It wasn’t often that she clicked with clients in such a way. Even if he didn’t really need her for the templates anymore, she would remain in contact. She found herself enjoying his company. “I’ve found myself enjoying their website more and more. It’s based in the UK.” She bunched her fingers into the hem of the dress to show it off. 

She followed his gaze to the man in question and gave a small smile. “He is good-looking, you did well,” she teased. “I’m glad you found someone who makes you happy. I’m here with my best friend, Kacie. I just chalk it up to her being my person, honestly. I’ve known her since my high school-ish days. I actually moved out here because she asked me to. I had to pass the bar in Washington, but I don’t regret moving out here for a minute.”

Living life as someone who people looked at and knew things about but never really knew was always frustrating to her. Aysel was one of the only friends she had who understood that struggle. It was part of why they got along so well and why they’d clicked so quickly. “It is cheesy but its a good cheesy.” She had always liked that sort of stuff anyway, something her brothers made sure to make fun of her for daily.

“Well lets toast to loving each other then, you’re my platonic soul mate anyway.” She clinked her glass against Aysel’s before taking a long sip and then reaching for her hand. “Now come dance with me and let’s see how many hotties we can entice.

“It’s like one of those Tunnels of Love in like...every carnival ever, you know?” she mused, her head tilting to the side in thought. “Except in party form.”

Even with the cheesy decorations and the way everyone looked so damned moony at each other, Aysel could still admit that it was aesthetically nice. And who knew? Perhaps the love of her life would be onboard. While she doubted it, she could appreciate the sentimentality.

“Hear, hear,” she agreed, reaching to tap their glasses together. She tipped her head back to down the rest of her drink and left her glass on the bar. “Fine, but I’m terrible and you’re leading.”

If Ben were the predatory kind of serial ONS-er, he probably would’ve asked the woman for direction.  That being said, that wasn’t exactly his reasoning for being here at all.  In fact, now that he’d lost track his friend-date while she mingled and was just generally more interesting than he was, Ben questioned why he was here at all.   “Sounds especially savage.  I guess at least there’s alcohol, if that’s your coping, or plenty of sugar to eat your feelings.  Beats having to dig out shoes and go to the store.”  He smirked in her general direction.  “I’d say I’ve been dumped in worse places, but that’s not exactly true.”

“It’s one way to ruin the holiday for someone forever,” she commented. While Aysel didn’t give much stock into the capitalistic holiday, she still hated the idea of anyone having something potentially wonderful ruined for someone else. “I mean, I had a disastrous breakup on St. Patrick’s Day. Definitely ruined that for me.”

“Is that what’s happening?” Nate asked curiously as he leaned against the rail. He had gone out to catch some fresh air, but, as silly as it was, he wasn’t expecting to be faced with the view. It was simply…unsettling. However, he didn’t have the time to focus on it as he was quickly met up with chaos. “That has to be so awkward, can you imagine? You have to spend the rest of the evening avoiding one another.”

“If you look carefully, you’ll see one person talking low, then the other turning away really quickly. It’s not so they’ll get something out of their teeth,” she explained. She nodded to one couple standing at the front of the ship. It was such an asshole move, in her opinion. Stars shone brilliantly overhead, it was the perfect time to actually propose. “Right? Especially if they’re expecting something else.”

“I’m great.” He said as he handed her a glass of wine. “ In fact I think I will no longer need a NDA…as I have met someone and I have decided to come out as I feel its the right time.” It was the first time he had said that out loud and it made him smile. “ There could be a backlash so I will still keep you on retainer if that’s ok, just in case.  Anyway enough about work.” He looked around and then grinned down at her. “ There are a lot of guys giving you the eye young lady, if any of them get too much you come to me and I’ll kick their ass. By the way you look amazing, that dress is so pretty.”

“Aksel, that’s such great news!” she gasped, her hand reaching out to hold his arm. There were times she toyed with the idea of coming out, but the intense homophobia that lay within her culture prevented it. Her family, flawed as they were, were still her family and she loved them. “Absolutely, I’d be happy to help in any way I can.” 

You’re still attracted to men? You’ll just marry a man, they would likely say. 

She followed his gaze around the party and she grasped the silky material of her dress in one hand. “I appreciate it. I bought it last year or so and I just never had a chance to wear it until now,” she admitted. Though she had gone ahead and bought it in the other colors it came in, same with a similar style. “You look very handsome, too. Where’s your new beau?”

Kacie was one of those people who just loved love so tonight was both depressing and beautiful all in one. She wished there was someone special in her life but until that day came, spending Valentine’s day with her best friend was a fair replacement. Her platonic soul mate if she had ever seen one. “I would have come alone if you didn’t want to go.” The blonde laughed and shook her head at Aysel. “But if you feel like leaving with someone else I’ll allow it as long as you’re safe.” She would never stand in the way of her girl getting some action on love day, so long as she was sure that she was in good hands. As they stepped onto the cruise, Kacie led them towards the bar, first stop was definitely drinks, and now that they had their wine glasses in hand, Kacie was surveying the crowd, seeing who else they might recognize on board.

Love had been something so transactional in Aysel’s life that she struggled with fully believing in it. It was conditional, both in her parents’ eyes and in exes in the past. Almost all of her friends, except Kacie, had been the same way. They wanted what she could give, not necessarily her. They liked the status that came from hanging around an Arslan. 

Kacie was the one person Aysel could be around and be secure in the knowledge her best friend wanted her. 

“I know. Even if these things are totally cheesy, it almost feels nice, you know?” she commented, taking a long sip of her wine.

Aysel wasn’t sure what it was about Valentine’s Day that made people want to dump their significant others on a boat, but they did. She had seen it three times by now. The latest time had been over something particularly brutal and she couldn’t resist looking at the person next to her. 

“God, who dumps their date on a boat? We’re literally floating out on the sea. There’s no leaving until we dock again?” she commented.
