It's bizarre how a quasi-denialist stance on COVID is becoming the accepted one in mainstream discourse, like, questioning masks and lockdowns and asking Questions about lab leak theory as the Enlightened stance. There are more mainstream stories insisting we must take lab leak seriously and treat it as if it's basically true, even though we not only haven't turned up any more evidence for it since 2020, we've turned up more evidence that it came from animals at one specific market in Wuhan. There was a piece claiming to turn up evidence, and the evidence was...that some scientists privately mentioned it as a possibility in emails early on. It's not even partisan anymore bc I've seen liberal and leftist publications & influencers all say we need to ask Questions and insist that masks and lockdowns didn't work, or at least made people angry, and thus we shouldn't have done them

The weirdest part, though, is that most of these Reflections just...write out Donald Trump and anti-vaxxers? They talk about "scientists" giving mixed messages and about the CDC, but some of them straight up don't mention Trump, and like. I feel like if you're talking about confusing messaging about COVID, the entire response being headed by a deranged anti-vaxxer who said whatever came to his mind about how horse medicine would cure it would be a major factor to address, but apparently not! It's just public health officials who dropped the ball. Hell, it almost feels like people have started to misremember COVID to think Biden was President during the lockdowns, just another step in the strange memory holing of Trump's first term

(They mess up the basic history of events that happened five years ago, too, like how a lot of these takes talk about how "confusing" it was that they went from "masks are for medical professionals and the most at risk" to "masks for everyone"...without mentioning that wasn't a random choice, but down to a shortage of masks early in the pandemic. Literally nothing was the result of outside factors or the government, all of it was just scientists confusing us for no reason)

They've just fully written Trump out of COVID and are openly declaring Biden was President during all of the pandemic, when in reality he was the one who lifted the restrictions after a few months. There was no interference from Trump, there were no anti-vaxxers making the pandemic far worse, it was all just Biden and Fauci's evil plot.

Biden, who was apparently President a year early and did all of COVID, and who's apparently President now, because that's the only explanation for the political press ignoring everything the current President is doing to devote the entire the entire news cycle to a book about Biden, and how the people who wrote the book about Biden are Very Brave for holding the media to task for not covering Biden enough, and how it's okay that the media is ignoring Trump's visible decline to praise themselves for this

It's nuts that the opinions about COVID seems on an unstoppable course towards the idea that the real problem with COVID was the precautions. All discussion about it is if we *went too far* with barely any mention of how millions of people died. The last round of stories about the "catastrophe" of school closures passed through the New York Times, the New Yorker, New York, the whole shebang. I read the New York one and you'll find a lot of gurning about the lost innocence of childhood and how children are social animals, and passages about how this was unfair to Donald Trump, and little of how, you know, COVID kills people. Only about how the danger was exaggerated and how the real tragedy was being too cautious about a pandemic plague

The narrative as it goes is this: by summer 2020, there was a consensus that schools could be reopened safely. Trump wanted them open, and Fauci and the Democrats (who are responsible for every single COVID policy under Trump somehow) refused to spite Trump and keep schools closed.

Of course, in reality, the majority of schools were open by March 2021. That's a little over a month into Biden's Presidency. Nonetheless it was his fault they stayed closed and Donald Trump reopened them

School closures sucked. They sucked far, far more for poor families than the largely middle class conservatives who make up the loudest voices against them, but they were hard for parents and did cause learning loss. But we did in fact do them because of the plague killing millions of people. That was a thing! The "real tragedy" of COVID wasn't that your child missed a year of in-person school or that you had to wear a mask, it's the people who fuckin died

This is to say, they take the same attitude JKR does: racism is wrong because it's factually incorrect on a pedantic level and not because it inherently places a certain group of people as inferior, a wrong belief to have no matter what.

For example, in the third Harry Potter, Hermoine gets called a slur by Draco. She goes to Hagrid, upset, and instead of saying Draco's wrong because he's bigoted and hateful, Hagrid starts talking pedantically. Not all muggle borns are inferior because Hermoine is academically gifted, and Neville, a pureblood, isn't. So therefore, racism is wrong! 👍🏾. Of course the implication is that if Hermoine wasn't good at school she'd deserve it..? And that's how tumblr users speak about racism.

My real world example is how some tumblr users tried to defend rap music by saying, not all of it is about drugs, sex and violence, so therefore it shouldn't be dismissed. But, what about the rap music that is about those things? Does that deserve to be belittled and mocked?

Astute observation as always. It's the subconscious belief that everything white is naturally superior because white people made it. While black art is naturally uncomfortable/hard to emphasise with because not only is it not white, it's black, and there's always an underlying sense of percieved aggression attached to blackness. For it to be liked, white people often project their own whiteness onto it (see things like how fandom treated Miles Morales after the Spiderverse movies). And when something, like rap music, does have an aggressive element to it, white people use that as an excuse to express discomfort while listening to heavy metal because white anger is the status quo and black anger is always a threat.

I didn't go far enough in describing the whitewashing as I'd like so here's my elaboration: fandom will often ignore a black character's aspects to their black culture and give them interests more aligned with white people (example: the fandom surrounding Tyler, the Creator's alter egos, where some of them lose their swag era fashion and get replaced with notoriously anti-black movements like (modern) scenemo), remove any "rough" edges to the black character to act "soft", tiktok softboi style (example: the woobification of Miles Morales), turning it into a big joke to laugh at and then call cringe (examples: Drake vs Kendrick rap beef, "brainrot" words that are just AAVE) or even just straight up ignoring the black context to music to fit their own white experiences (example: 'Wavy' by SZA being used by white girls to complain about not being blonde, the 'Black Barbies' by Nicki Minaj trend on tiktok being hijacked by insecure white girls, and ad nauseam).

This all just ties back into seeing black art as inferior and "fixing" what black art they deem just about good enough to be more white and ie more acceptable
