Your Happiness is Your Own Responsibility
Lately I’ve been feeling unhappy with my life. People irritate me, bad weather makes me feel blue, my bachelor thesis feels like a thousand pounds of burden on my shoulder, and I could going on and on writing all the things that make me feel terrible, but I have to stop here.
It’s sound so cliche, yet I’m glad to be reminded that happiness is under our control. If you don’t like the way people treat you, leave them. If the weather is bad, go to sleep. If your thesis feels so hard, find a guru. The key is simple, you can either leave the thing, or find a solution to make it better.
But the most important part is: stop talking about your negative feelings.
I thought talking about it to my friends can help me feel better. It did. Only it didn’t last for more than 3 hours. The more I talk about it, the more my mind is reminded about those bad stuffs, in which ended up adding more negativity to the equation.
Honestly speaking, whenever I’m sad, I did expect attention from the people that are close to me. As an example, I used to be upset if my significant other does not comfort me or cheer me up when I feel sad or emotionally tired. But as we spend more time together, I became aware that being in a relationship does not necessarily mean that he hold account to my happiness.
Love and affection from our loved ones are the best comfort. However, we have to also rely to the fact that each of us are responsible to our own happiness. Be a catalyst to your own joy. The existence of other people is just a bonus.
In order to be happy, I think people should always remember that happiness is not merely a state of mind, it’s mentality . You don’t pursue it, you have it already.
“Happiness is not determined by what's happening around you, but rather what's happening inside you. Most people depend on others to gain happiness, but the truth is, it always comes from within.” - Anonymous
