The "have you eaten" is quite an Asian thing too! My Nani (grandma) says that straight after greeting us, so Korea isn't alone! We do it too!

Yeah I gathered that a lot of other Asian cultures do this after reading the tags on that post!! :D which is cool since I do think it’s a pretty thoughtful cultural habit haha. I don’t mean to make it seem like Korea is the Only One that has that cultural quirk at all- just wanted to explain to ppl the origin of our particular habit to those that seem to really not understand why the characters ask if you’ve eaten. I appreciate your ask tho anon!! ^ 7 ^ 9

I’ve seen a lot of posts mocking how the characters constantly ask if you’ve eaten, and it’s grating on my nerves so here’s a quick cultural lesson from a Korean to those of you not yet in the know to hopefully lessen the frankly disrespectful posts about it.

In Korean culture, we don’t ask “how are you”- we ask “have you eaten?” This comes from way back when the Korean War had happened. Food was scarce, and so people helped each other out. If one hadn’t eaten and answered “no” to this question, they would be fed. It was a time of providing for each other after a long time of hardship. And so even now, over 60 years later, we ask “have you eaten?” as a common (polite) greeting. It doesn’t carry quite the same gravity anymore, but it still indicates care and concern for the other person’s well-being. The characters aren’t being overbearing; they want to make sure you’re doing okay and thus eating properly. It’s also more of a habit than anything else, in most cases. So to see so many posts and memes making fun of this just really ???????? Sure, the translation may come off as “creepy” due to its frequency, but the frequency is the norm in Korea, aka the place the game is originally from. So there’s really no reason to mock it at all imo.

It’s highly understandable that several of you simply didn’t know, so I’m here to just inform you all about this. Please reblog to spread the knowledge- I am Tired of seeing those posts

EDIT 09/17/16: after making this post, it has been brought to my attention that several other Asian cultures share this habit (though not with the exact same origin ofc) which is super neat!! Really thankful to those of you that were understanding of this quirk in the game thanks to that :> so I guess this post is more for those that really have never had contact with this kind of cultural quirk, and are experiencing it for the first time through a Korean context- just wanted to make it clear I don’t mean to demean any other cultures at all.
