Call me Charlie! Or any version of my username, I’m not that picky! My pronouns are she/her and obviously I like Azrael/Jean-Paul Valley!

I was introduced to this blonde disaster man during the third season of Wayne Family Adventures, thought he had a cool design, googled him and IMMEDIATELY fell in love with him, the fact that he has long hair and glasses definitely didn’t help.

I’m slowly making my way through the comics but so far I’ve only read the 2022 Sword of Azrael run, cause, that’s the only one I’ve been able to get in its entirety lol it’s my prized possession and joining its ranks is the collection of Azrael comics I’ve slowly been amassing. I’m so scared to take them out of their plastic packaging because im scared to ruin them 💀

I think one of the funniest things about Jean-Paul is that he wasn't even religious to start with. Later on he embraced religion, and im sure there's been some type of retcon about this now thats its been a few decades, but from what I remember he was straight up in college doing his thing only for his father to die in front of him and pass off the mantle, be kidnapped to Switzerland and get told that actually his family line are hosts for the angel Azrael and it is his job now to Kill Sinners for The Church.

Like Jean-Paul, 21 years old, who only went to church during Easter and Christmas at the behest of his father and was pretty sure he was agnostic but didnt have time to think about it, got Dean Supernaturaled. Worse actually, motherfucker didnt even get real angels

Something I love about Azrael is because we experience everything from Jean Paul’s perspective, what is and isn’t real is very unclear. He is a very unreliable narrator on his own, but he is also fed these very fantastical and distorted narratives by the members of the Order. And because some of it has a basis in history, it’s nearly impossible to differentiate the truth of the Order from the stories concocted by its leaders.

Even outside of St. Dumas, the events of the comic can be pretty vague as well. There will be massive scenes that Jean Paul is caught in, only for the reader to learn it was questionably a hallucination. There is no real gap in knowledge between JPV and the reader, we are equally lost and unsure about his circumstances. It is immersive, and part of the charm of Azrael (1995).

So I know that Jean-Paul has animal DNA. Now imagine if JPV could see things that weren’t there.

I know some animals can see ’better’ than humans. Like shadowy figures in halls, things in the peripheral, stuff like that. I know Azrael isn’t actually the angel of death but I think it’d be fitting, or at least interesting if his senses were like on hyperdrive and he was more aware of stuff than other people, like shifts in the building, strange scents in the air from chemicals, he can see better in the dark, processes movement faster, etc

It’s not scientifically proven that animals can see the supernatural, but this is also DC where there are aliens and demons. Imagine him seeing flickers of light and shadows, faces one second that are gone the next, shadow figures in his periphery. There are things there that Jean-Paul has long since learned to ignore, but make Azrael more vigilant and wary.

Azrael doesn’t trust those flickers, the people made of darkness and shadows. He can’t attack them, but he can’t guide them to the hereafter either.
