There Sofie saw her mother: her once neatly coiled hair now tumbled in disarray, her robe hung askew, carelessly slipping from her shoulders. The mannequin’s withered arms encircled her, its grotesque mask pressed intimately against her face. In its lifeless embrace, her mother’s visage alight with an unsettling vitality. She caressed its body with a reverence that made Sofie’s skin crawl, and her kisses — once bestowed so tenderly on Sofie’s forehead — were now pressed fervently against that cold, unfeeling mask.
