The cost of our empire of illusion is not being paid by the corporate titans. It is being paid on the streets of our inner cities, in former manufacturing towns, and in depressed rural enclaves. This cost transcends declining numbers and statistics and speaks the language of human misery and pain. Human beings are not commodities. They are not goods. They grieve and suffer and feel despair. They raise children and struggle to maintain communities. The growing class divide is not understood, despite the glibness of many in the media, by complicated sets of statistics, lines on a graph that chart stocks, or the absurd, utopian faith in unregulated globalization and complicated trade deals. It is understood in the eyes of a man or woman who is no longer making enough money to live with dignity and hope.

I can barely keep a 4/4 beat, polyrhythms are insane! This is so lovely.

I would end up in an E. R. somewhere.
A culture that does not grasp the vital interplay between morality and power, which mistakes management techniques for wisdom, which fails to understand that the measure of a civilization is its compassion, not its speed or ability to consume, condemns itself to death.

Nerdy Fact #1434: Wonder Woman was originally based on two women: the wife of creator William Marston and one of his former students that both he and his wife had sexual encounters with.Â
(Source.)
How about you actually name âem?
Elizabeth Holloway Marston and Olive Byrne were among a number of women who contributed to the original Wonder Woman, and theyâre fascinating people in their own right.
Elizabeth Holloway Marston was a brilliant woman. She earned three university degrees in psychology and law at a time when few women received any tertiary education. She was a successful career woman who assisted her husband with his work and was frequently the breadwinner of the family.
The main reason she was able to continue working after having children? Olive Byrne, who was not simply a casual âsexual encounterâ, but the Marstonsâ lover and life partner. To enable Elizabeth to work, Olive stayed at home and raised both her and Elizabethâs children. She also wrote for Family Circle and contributed to Marstonâs research.
Elizabeth is credited with pushing her husband to create a female superhero, and after his death she worked hard to preserve his vision for the character, urging DC to employ her as the comicâs editor (she was ignored).
Wonder Womanâs braceletâs are Oliveâs bracelets: Olive was known for wearing a pair of wide silver bracelets, and Marston had these in mind when he envisioned Dianaâs bullet-deflecting accessories.
Marston died in 1947, but Elizabeth and Olive continued to live together until the end of their lives.
Wait. Clarification please. Are you telling me that the creator of Wonder WOMAN WAS IN A POLY-AMOROUS RELATIONSHIP?
Yep! They were in a poly relationship and had four children together, two by Elizabeth and two by Olive.
(And for those whoâve asked about sources, the Marstonsâ story is covered in detail in The Secret History of Wonder Woman by Jill Lepore and Wonder Woman: The Complete History by Les Daniels)
Wonder Woman was inspired and shaped by not only a man who was incredibly progressive and awesome by todays standards let alone the standards of the day he lived in but also by a fierce, intelligent and awesome bisexual woman
This is one of the many reasons why the ways DC has ruined Wonder Woman in their pursuit of making the book as backwards and heteronormative as possible pisses me offâŠ
Not a fierce and intelligent and awesome bisexual woman.
Two fierce and intelligent and awesome bisexual women.Â
You are correct :D
Imagine growing up in that house
âMom wants to see you.â
âPsychology mom or bracelet mom?â
âBracelet mom.â
According to Lepore, the kids called Elizabeth âKeetieâ and Olive âDotsieâ!
That is adorable.
I have reblogged this before and will continue to do it until the day I die. The origin story of WW comics is as fucking great as the character herself.
Fun fact: Oliveâs bracelets were a gift from William and Elizabeth, and were basically an alternative to a wedding ring, since she couldnât legally marry them. Dianaâs bracelets, 70+ years later, are a symbol of that relationship.
Another fun fact: Thereâs a movie coming out about their relationship, starring Luke Evans and Rebecca Hall and Bella Heathcote that was written AND directed by a woman (Angela Robinson)

William Christenberry.
Fresh Air Remembers Artist William Christenberry, Chronicler Of The Rural South
Christenberry, who died on Monday, drew on his childhood experiences in Alabama. One of his pieces was inspired by an encounter he had with a Klansman. Originally broadcast in 1997.
The lawsuit against Poulos also revealed he was responsible for a similar death in 2013. 28-year-old Rickey Rozelle was unarmed when he was shot and killed by Poulos during a chase. In that instance, Poulos said he thought the victim was armed. Records show at least nine past complaints against Poulos. (x)

Last night, as the temperature in Standing Rock plunged below 30 degrees, hundreds were blasted with water cannons.
As a Native woman who has been to Standing Rock three times, and whose health now prevents me from making a fourth trip, I have my own asks. Call every  number put in front of you. Jam every phone line. Look at the target list of financial institutions supporting this pipeline. Pick a bank. Shut it down, just like we did in Chicago on Saturday and people did in Philadelphia this morning. The Trump administration hasnât even taken hold yet, and I watched over a livestream last night as my friends and people were battered with water streams that can tear skin from flesh and eyes from sockets. I watched my people hold space and scramble to save one another as drops of water froze to razor wire.
I know marginalized people around the county are organizing for their own survival right now, and sitting around tables discussing the difficult days ahead. But a strategy of protection, defense and obstruction cannot wait for the inauguration of an autocrat. It must be applied here and now.
Please show us that you see us. Please do all you can to stop this.
If you cannot travel to Standing Rock, or support or organize an action where you live, consider contacting one of these Sheriffs and police departments that have loaned out the officers who are abusing Native peoples in Standing Rock. Jam their phone lines and tell them to bring their people home. If your community is on this list, actively organize to recall the deployment.
