it blows my mind, that against all odds my people are still surviving. the world is truly against me & my Indigenous siblings yet we still persist & survive. our ancestors would be proud of us.

One of the features of abusive family environment is not being allowed to talk about past events. It’s unwritten law that you’re not supposed to mention that one time when your parent screamed at you, swore and called you slurs, broke something of yours, hit you, threw something at you, threw a tantrum and punished you when you did nothing wrong, failed to support you, failed to acknowledge you as a person, dismissed all that you do like it doesn’t matter. If you mention it, and acknowledge that it’s a thing that happened, and something they’ve done, you’re risking them doing it all over agian, just to “teach you better than to mention such thing”.
It’s normal in abusive environments to always continue as if nothing happened, as if what happened was just some kind of isolated incident that is probably not going to happen again, and you’re scared to cause it again by mentioning it. I’ve seen abusive parents throw unbeliveable amount of rage, threats and violence at their children, disappear for a while, then come back with a smile like nothing at all happened, like the event before wasn’t even real for them, making you feel like you could have just imagined it all. Children would be just so relived that the rage is over, they wouldn’t dare to mention it again, they just wanted it to not repeat. The fear of abuser gets overwhelming to the point where holding them accountable isn’t even a priority anymore, you’re not even expecting an apology or guilt over what they’ve done, you just end up feeling confused and helpless and hope to god they don’t explode again. You focus on tiptoeing around them and praying not to trigger another outburst, feeling like it could be your fault if it happens again.
These “incidents” are never isolated or accidental, abuser can bring them on whenever they want, to get more fear and control over the household, and they know it. They’re using the outbursts intentionally to keep the rest of the family on their toes, scared and ready to obey out of fear. They know they’ll get more tiptoeing and leeway and get away with anything and get special treatment as a reward for abusive behaviour.
Other way I’ve seen abusers deal with this is to pretend as if they’re too ashamed or too guilty to talk about those things, and everyone should stop reminding them as they already feel bad enough, of course they’re going to say it angrily, so you know that calling them out is dangerous, and then of course, do the abusive behaviour over, and over again, making is extremely doubtful about just how guilty they feel. If a person experiences guilt and shame after their behaviour, it’s unlikely they will repeat it, because it would hurt them too, so if they do repeat it, it’s more likely that their “guilt” was just a lie.
I actually thought every family had such “secrets” they’re not allowed to mention and it was common to not bring up the dirty laundry on other family members, until I heard a friend chat with their mom about something messed up that happened years and years in the past. I was shocked to hear that to them it was a completely normal thing to talk about, there wasn’t a thing that was forbidden to mention! Mentioning past events wasn’t used against anyone or to hurt anyone, it was just something to learn from and analyze and discuss, and this is normal for all events, everything should be talked about.
oh and one more thing, abuser sometimes will mention these events, but frame them as if it’s something victim did, or something that victim caused, for example “don’t make me do that again” or “yeah remember when you made me that angry and couldn’t handle it?” or they will look at the mess they made and ask who did it, or pretend victims did it instead. They’re not that delusional, they’re saying those things on purpose, because purpose of these events was to cause terror and guilt, and they’re later reinforcing it by blame shifting, and further ignoring the damage they’ve caused.
bill nye has fucking snapped. if you say the words “chinese hoax” he’ll personally teleport to your location, set you on fire, and tell you that “oh no boo hoo you can’t stop being on fire because it costs too much money to not be on fire guess it’s just not worth extinguishing you”. he’d stab an oil company exec with knife hidden under his light blue lab coat. that man has gone off the civility rails, he is absolutely living, i admire him fully, we stan
Bill Nye has what feels like a valid anti-hero/supervillain origin story. Young, optimistic scientist dedicates his life to educating children about science, but then watch as those same kids grow up to ignore science and continue to destroy the earth. So in a fit of rage/act of desperation he activates Super ScientistTM mode and becomes his superpowered persona and starts killing billionaires in ridiculous over-the-top fourth grade science fair experiment related ways.
Tbh, I’d help him

This is so powerful and courageous. Police all over the country are pulling this despicable shit. They’re supposed to be protecting and serving. Monsters.
hey folx, real quick regarding Pride season:
if y'all see that your local libraries and museums are doing pride displays and events, PLEASE INTERACT WITH THE MATERIALS AND/OR ATTEND THEM! even if its just a pretty arrangement of lgbt books, borrow the materials amd make comments about how much you like them.
libraries in particular take a lot of heat for showcasing lgbt stuff, but having supporting statistics in hand to defend ourselves helps to keep the directors from backing down when confronted by conservative blowhards. but we only get those statistics if you’re actually there supporting us. my system dropped our Storytime with a Drag Queen events because of this.
please boost this, and as always, support your local queer librarians!
If I see a poc get stopped by police, or a woman with a hijab by herself, etc...how do I politely use my white privilege to protect them if need be? Or like...offer my support? Like...how do I go about making sure everything is okay without popping in like "White lady here to make sure this officer doesn't do something racist." Or "white lady here to make sure no one messes with this girl who is alone"? How do I politely insert myself in a nonracist way?
Hi there, anon! Quite frankly, though I’ve fortunately never been in this situation, what I believe I’d find most comforting and/or helpful would be for you to either simply make your presence known (i.e. stand nearby and tbh kind of stare the officers down like you see them, and you see exactly what they’re doing. You are a witness to any of the crimes they may commit.)
And if things get heated? RECORD what is going on. Everyone’s phone has a camera. You’re not going to be able to like punch out an officer or even stop someone from getting arrested, but if you have evidence proving that someone was being harassed by the police while they were minding their own goddamn business, then that’s helpful to combat any bullshit lie officers may make up.
Again, I’ve never been in this situation, but from hearing about things like this, having video evidence seems to help victims of police harassment and brutality and perhaps your presence and aggressive observation can stop it in the first place.
Other than that, I’ve got nothing. These are just things I thought might be helpful. Followers?

I have one experience as a white passing woman of just BEING there making the cops bail.
There’s a black homeless man who lives near my apartment. The cops stopped him and looked like they were getting really tense, hands on their guns. So I just walked up with a smile.
They asked what I needed and all I said was, “just came to offer my friend a candy.” They gave him stern looks and grumbled as they left. I gave the man a candy bar and just stood there smiling until the cop car pulled away.
I still see him so I guess they got the message that a local wasn’t going to put up with him being harassed.
Which brings me to another thing:
Please use your privilege to protect homeless people too if you can. ESPECIALLY minority homeless people.
“Female thinness and youth are not in themselves next to godliness in this culture. Society really doesn’t care about women’s appearance per se. What genuinely matters is that women remain willing to let others tell them what they can and cannot have. Women are watched, in other words, not to make sure that they will “be good,” but to make sure that they will know they are being watched.”
