Valentine's Day was a week away and Jason did not know what he was doing. When you grow up on the streets and die at the age of 15 you kind of miss how these things worked. But this year was different, this year he had you and he needed to make it special. You were a stabilizing force in his life, even when nothing else was. Sure you were both vigilantes and constantly toed the line of death, but you did it together.
The problem was he had no clue what to get you. Your shared apartment was already cluttered with trinkets that the two of you had scavenged while on patrol. You hated when he spent money on you, so anything worth more than 10 dollars was out. He could take you out on a nice date, but even that felt too cliche. Without any ideas, he turned to the dark side: his siblings.Â
He figured Dick was the best place to start. He and Kory had been going strong for a while and they seemed genuinely happy together. Jason had barely brought up the subject before Dick was giving him suggestions at a million miles per minute.Â
âHave you considered an oversized teddy bear?â Dick rambled. âPerhaps a love letter, that one's cheap.â
âWhat the hell would we do with an oversized teddy bear?â
âI donât know, it fits in with the holiday! Have you considered something for their suit?âÂ
âFirst good suggestion youâve had tonight.âÂ
âI have been nothing but helpful. Perhaps one of those chocolate things.â
Needless to say, Dick was not the right answer, but his suggestion about armor was a good one. But there was a caveat, you were extremely meticulous about your suit and gear. Everything was hand built and customized by you down to the finest detail. Jason had barely been able to convince you to add in some bat tech for more safety, so the thought of getting you something new was a no go. Unfortunately, thatâs when Tim brought in his two cents.Â
âYou know I could just hack into their system and see their search history.â Tim said blankly.
Jason stared at Tim. He had said it so casually that you would hardly know he had just proposed a crime.Â
âAre you being serious?â Jason asked.Â
â...Yes?â Tim questioned.
âYou are absurd.â
âIâm right! Youâd get the answer!â
âBut if they found out youâd be dead!â
âIf they found out!â
Tim definitely didnât have the answer, at least not in a morally okay way to Jason. He was getting frustrated with himself. You couldnât be this hard to get a gift for! There had to be something out there that you would like. At this point the oversized teddy bear wasnât looking like a bad option. It was the day before Valentineâs Day and he still had no idea what he was going to do.Â
Then the last person youâd expect came along: Damian. Jason was scrambling at the last minute to put together a basic card when he heard a scoff behind him.Â
âYou know they like flowers right?âÂ
Jason paused. âWhat?â
âThat stupid card you're making is pathetic. Why donât you get them flowers?â Damian stated.
In that moment Jason realized that he had forgotten the very basics of gifts in a relationship, flowers. He knew you loved them, when you first started dating heâd pick you up a bouquet every week, but somehow along the way that habit had faded.Â
âI guess it just slipped my mind.â Jason replied.Â
âGood work Todd. Now go get them flowers or I will.â
That night Jason waited by the front door holding a bouquet of flowers. He had personally chosen them himself, collecting an array of your favorites in all the shades you loved. They smelled incredibly sweet, yet never overpowering. He knew you would like them, yet the edge of anxiety still nipped at him.
Then he heard the jingle of your keys at the door and the anxiety took a full bite. He felt his breath hitch and his grip tighten on the flowers as the door creaked open. There you stood clutching onto a bouquet of red flowers, a chocolate box held beneath your chin as you prodded open the door with your foot. You looked up at Jason and wore an expression of pure shock, like you had just been caught breaking into a home.Â
âWhat are you doing home this early?â You said, not having moved position.
âI wanted to surprise youâŚAre those flowers?â
âI could ask you the same question.â
The two of you eyed each other for a second longer before breaking out into a quiet laughter.Â
âI thought that I would get you some for Valentineâs!â You blurted out.
âWell I thought the same thing!â
âWeâre so creative.â
âOh very, the most creative people youâve ever met.â Jason said as he moved to help you inside. âAre these chocolates?â
âCome on, you canât have a Valentineâs without cheap chocolate in a heart box.â
âI have literally never heard of this before.â
âYouâre shitting me right?â
Jason burst out laughing again. âYou forget I really didnât have a reason to celebrate before.â
âWell weâre changing that tonight. You are now going to be forced to watch all the shitty rom-coms I can find.â You said grinning ear-to-ear.
âOh no, the horror! Whatever will I do!â He sarcastically remarked.Â
âI guess youâll just have to suffer through it.â You shrugged as you made your way to the kitchen to put the flowers in a vase. âOr not but whereâs the fun in that.â
âYou drive a hard bargain, but I am willing to accept your offer.â
The two of you spent the rest of the night wrapped up on the couch together watching as many cheesy movies as you could stomach. Behind you on the counter sat two vases of flowers, one red and one decked out in your favorite color. In a week when they would start to die off, you and Jason would go hand-in-hand to buy a new bouquet. It was something small, but it was all the two of you needed. A reminder that the two of you loved each other more than one action could explain.
