Did you know that male octopuses have specialized reproductive arm called a hectocotylus to transfer sperm packets? I assume yes, you do, but

did you know that many male octopuses try to mate from a safe distance using the full length of their specialized arm? In pelagic (open-ocean) species like the argonaut or blanket octopus, the male usually detaches the hectocotylus entirely during mating to literally launch it at full speed into a female, it then goes independently into the female's mantle cavity to fertilize her eggs while the male just kind of

swims at a distance. They do that mostly if the female doesn't want to mate and kinda force it into her that way, but they usually do that because if a female really DOESN'T want to mate she will probably strangle and beat the shit out of the male if he was too close. Sooo, male octopuses don't attack females, but they harass them in other ways 😔
