The Autumnal Equinox: Finding balance as the cycle ends
With the happy, chaotic vibes of summer coming to a close, we welcome in the more introspective part of the year. It is a time to withdraw, to cleanse, to give thanks for what we have grown in the year and prepare that which we are ready to discard on the Feast of Ashes in October.
Often this is a time to gather with those you care about, or simply revel in your love of self and reflect on the dropping temperatures and changing leaves. The bounty of the late summer garden gives way to roots and gourds and the last of the herb garden offerings.
Like the Spring Equinox, this period marks a time of equal day and night, making it a good time for magic that relates to reining in bad habits, finding peace in a busy lifestyle, or bringing harmony to a household in strife. Unlike the Spring Equinox, however, which focuses on bringing balance to restore energy and vigor for growth the Autumnal Equinox welcomes you to bring balance for a proper rest. It’s energy asks you to appreciate everything you have done, big or small, and prepare for the darker half of the year by gathering up all of your grief, fear, anxiety and exhaustion in bundles before you so you can be ready to let them go. For we cannot release what we do not need if you don’’t first examine what we have and who we are.
I will share with you some of my traditions for this time of year, to give you an idea of the kind of productive magical and mundane work you can do to prepare yourself for the waning light. As someone with SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), I find that my transition into Fall is very important to my mental health as it reminds me to let go of what I cannot control.
Some good Autumnal Equinox traditions:
🍁 Just like Spring Cleaning, you can do some Fall Cleaning and prepping your house for the colder months. Put out your cold weather clothes (if appropriate for the time) and go through your warm weather things to bag up what doesn’t fit anymore or is unwanted anymore to give to secondhand stores or repurpose into other things (old t-shirts make nice dusting clothes~!), check windows for drafts, clean the fireplace and chimney if you have one, polish up your kitchen and pantry, sweep and mop floors and reset any wards or protection magics you have on your space.
🍁 If you are so inclined, the first day of Fall is a perfect day to decorate for Halloween and for the season! You can make a ritual out of it like I do by sipping hot apple cider and playing some spooky or seasonally associated music (I tend to gravitate toward richer, warmer folk music around this time of year!)
🍁 This is the second harvest holiday, and I personally strongly link this time of year to apples, so you could go apple picking and afterwards make an apple ie charmed to bring peace and happiness to those who eat it! Or if you picked a lot of apples make a happiness applesauce! You can also slice up apples and cook them in the oven to make apple chips for teas or just to snack on.
🍁 If you are looking to bring balance into some aspect of your life, consider setting up a white candle and a black candle on your altar (or perhaps a yellow/gold and blue/silver set would work too!) As you work your magic for the day, the candles will invoke the equinox spirit into your working! If you cannot have candles, you can use a sunstone and a moonstone, or you could use clay or paper colored with your desired hues depicting balance.
🍁 If the weather is fair and you have one near you, I find that visiting a river or stream is particularly nice as they are a body of Water, which is linked to emotions and also to the properties of motion and overcoming obstacles. If you find that you are having trouble coming to terms with some aspect of yourself or an event in your life, spending time near a river or placing a river stone on your altar might help you.
These are just a few ideas of how to bring the Equinox energies into your home and to use them in your practice. Other popular activities include feasting, offering appropriate gifts to spirits of the land and home, having a bon fire, and tying natural strings to trees as a form of wish making.

Can we normalize doing nothing, please?
I work with kids. These kids are at my program before and after school, and then some of them have sports/dance/music sometimes all of the above before they finally go home, eat dinner, and go to sleep. Then rinse and repeat everyday, and games and more classes on the weekend, etc.
I’m all for extracurriculars, but this turns into the teen who is not only in the school play, but they’re on the newspaper, the football team, and seven different clubs. In college they take double the courseloads, and then once they graduate…what?
They work themselves raw because they arent used to downtime. They’ve been told they can always be doing something, and they don’t know how to relax. This turns into the adult that has anxiety because there’s nothing left to clean, the adult that desperately wants to watch that TV show but can’t force themselves to sit long enough for it.
Then they turn into the moms and dads who spend all their free time ferrying their kids to extracurriculars.
Like, these kids don’t know what downtime is? I told a kid I did nothing last weekend, and he looked at me like I was crazy. He asked what I was doing this weekend and I said “Probably sleeping, mostly,” and he actually gasped. Then he rattled off a bunch of things I could do, to which I had to stop him.
“No, you don’t understand. I plan on sleeping. I’m booked.”
“But you could–”
“Nah. I’m just gonna rest.”
It was as if I had said a bad word or something. I asked what he does when he gets sick, and he says he goes to practice anyway. I asked him what he does if he doesn’t feel like going, and he said he goes anyway. I asked when he takes time to rest, and he said when he sleeps at night.
Bring back lazy Sundays. Bring back Saturday morning cartoons. Bring back the idea of relaxing and soaking in your day before moving into the next thing. Bring back the right to breathe, the right to rest.
Bring back mental health days, and taking a break. Bring back taking a walk or watching a show or setting a timer to remind yourself to stop cleaning and relax.
If you’re running at 100% all the time with no time to recharge, then your battery is going to die spectacularly, and probably at the worst possible time.
Mood
Society is trying to burn us all out. Tell society to fuck off.
Go take a fucking nap. You’ve more than earned it and you deserve it.
We HAVE to recharge. Our bodies, our minds, our everything requires it.
Those issues are… world wide for real…
I made bread and went on a hike yesterday! Fuck capitalist conceptions of productivity 🌿🌲🍞

🌾Lughnasadh/Lammas Ritual🌾
(Originally created and hosted for The Alexandria Archives on 8/1/19)
Instrumental/Nature music for this ritual: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiveDidzPyw
Supplies:
a small handful oats/rice/grain (or paper scraps to symbolize the grain) to scatter on the ground or table
a simple grain-based snack (cracker, popcorn, ricecake, slice of bread, bagel, cookie, etc.) berries or grapes or a pear/peach. Enough to be split- half for yourself and half as an offering.
A candle
Candle dressings with holiday associations (oil/tincture/tea of rose, sandalwood, or citrus; gold or yellow colored flower petals (dandelions count!); amber, citrine, peridot, carnelian crystals; gold, orange, yellow, green, or light brown ribbon/thread/fabric)
a pen/pencil and paper
a divination tool
Today we give thanks for the first harvest. This no longer means literally for most people but it doesn’t we can’t do it symbolically! Also a harvest, in witchcraft, can mean many things beyond agricultural hauls. We are through the first half of the year and are reaping what we’ve sown for those first six months. Observing the changes in your community, your local wildlife and foliage. This greater connection is all a part of the harvest of life.
Get settled somewhere safe and comfortable; your supplies nearby. Collect the oats/rice/paper scraps in your hand. Feel their texture and the way they connect to the earth. How they hold the very foundation of a harvest in a tiny compact little vessel; waiting to be planted and tended to. Cup your hands in front of your face and gently blow on the grains. Think of the sun, the rain, the warmth needed to turn a seed into a crop. You are lending your energy to them. Tonight they are going to help guide us along this ritual. I like to take a breath and blow on the grains three times, but you can do it as many times as you need until it feels like the grains are bathing in your energy.
Gently scatter the grains/scraps on the floor (or a table surface- that’s okay). We are asking for the Harvest’s Blessing tonight and give this grain in trade. Close your eyes. Envision that you are now in a field and the grains you’ve scattered are already sprouting, growing, until there is a field of grain at least waist high around you. Run your hands gently through the soft shoots. Hear the wind blow through them; birdsong joins in joyously- it almost sounds like music. Wander through this field at your leisure; reflect on what this year has brought you. The good and bad. Think about how you can weed the bad out of future harvests and how to multiply the good for the next harvest. At some point, you will stumble across a small curved knife or pair of scissors in the field. Pick them up. They feel warm and familiar in your hand. The earth offers you some of her harvest willingly. Cut a small sheaf of the grain, the size of a small bouquet.
As you come back to yourself in your physical space imagine the sheaf of wheat came back with you and was transformed into energy that infused your candle dressing. Take a moment to hold the dressing and visualize that- the energy of the Harvest filling that oil/ribbon/petals/stones/etc. Take your candle and dress it with the Harvest imbued dressing; thinking of those wheat fields and the music they made. Charge the candle with the energy of the sabbat (charging methods: visualizing, rubbing, singing/humming, tapping, blowing, etc.).
Light your candle.
Take your pen and paper and think back to that walk in the field. Think about those personal harvests this year has brought you so far. On the top of the paper write down the good harvests you’ve been brought. On the bottom write down the bad. Tear the paper in half.
Feed the “bad harvests” to the candle- the Light of Lugh consuming it and cleansing it. Take the other half and place it under your offering you have. Focus on the good of those harvests and how they made you feel filling that snack and lighting the way for the rest of this year. Take a portion and eat it. The warm glow of prosperity and luck of the holiday fills you all the way to your toes as you eat this offering. Declare the other portion for the earth and deities/spirits of this Harvest. Leave your paper underneath until you dispose of the offering (in whatever manner you are comfortable with).
Lastly, time for some sabbath divination! You can do this at your leisure and share the results if you’re comfortable! I also have a specific holiday cartomancy spread below if you happen to be using those tools and feel so inclined! Once you’ve performed and recorded your holiday divination, take a moment to ground yourself and be gentle in returning to a more solid frame of thought. Please share any impressions, observations, feelings that you’d like to! Harvest Blessings to you all!

Honey Lavender Bread
submitted by @materiamystica
½ cup Greek yoghurt ½ cup plain flour 1tsp baking powder ¼ tsp salt 1 tbsp dried lavender 1 tbsp honey 1 egg, beaten
The intent is to increase mental clarity and connection. To clear your spiritual and mental brain fog so that you can think and see more clearly again. To improve clarity of vision and connection to your heart’s desire. Lavender is employed to stimulate clarity and connection, cleansing, memory, passion, peace of mind, healing, love, passion and retention. With the honey for added sweetness and stickiness to make visions all the more sweet, and memories stick more permanently. Harvesting your own lavender can also be intended to honour Lammas, too!
1. Mix everything in a bowl and preheat the oven at 350 F. 2. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead adding more flour until it’s no longer sticky and has formed a nice stretchy bread dough. 3. Put into a floured loaf tin. 4. Brush top with egg wash. 5. Bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes until a golden crust has formed and a skewer comes out clean. 6. Slice and enjoy!
🎵How To Do Shufflemancy🎵
a quick guide on my favorite type of divination, that’s simple and easy to do!
🎵 gather: yourself, your music collection, your question and a few moments.
optional:
crystals to boost energy and clarity - amethyst and citrine
incense to light the mood for heavy divining
🎵 you may want to charge the device you use for music with magical intent.
🎵 focus on your question, and come up with a number.
🎵 the number can be personally important, or can be the number of letters in the question, or number of words, etc.
🎵 go into a playlist, or your entire music collection, whichever you feel more appropriate.
🎵 hit shuffle, and then skip song the amount of times the number you chose
🎵 focus on your question and the divining energy during the skips.
🎵 listen to the song you land on, interpret the lyrics as your answer.
note:
🎵 like tarot and other divination forms, exact “yes” or “no” answers are harder to find. open ended questions are best.
🎵 if you create a specific playlist with only positive or negative songs, you may skew your results. shufflemancy can only work with what you give it

Tarot 101: Practice Makes Perfect
The Only Way to Learn...
...is to read! (I bet you thought I was going to say something super restrictive there, huh?) I hate to break it to you, but tarot really isn’t something you think about a lot and then you’ve suddenly got it. There are 78 cards that’s a lot to remember, and to read tarot effectively, you don’t want to look at them like flash cards. While each card has its list of keywords, knowing cards simply as keywords, in my experience will give you shallow and less fulfilling readings.
So grab your deck! We’re not quite ready to practice yet, but we will get there soon.
Tarot is a Language
Now that we’re talking about fulfilling readings, it’s important to understand that tarot works, in many ways, in the same way that a language does. A word on its own can mean one specific thing, but strung together in a sentence with other words, the context of that words gives it a more complex meaning.
Let me give you an example.
If I show you The Lovers, you’re probably going to thinka few things right away: love, balance, harmony, relationships, and so on. But what if I show you The Lovers next to a Three of Pentacles? On its own, the three will probably make you think of wealth, responsibility, tasks, etc. But together do are they talking about “love tasks”? Probably not. In context of one another, The Lovers and the Three of Pentacles probably indicate a struggle to handle a large level of socialization. Too many relationships are taking your time and energy, and it’s making it hard for you to maintain them.
That’s pretty different from the keywords, right? So, learn the keywords! They’re handy for remembering the complexities of each card because knowing a handful of words can trigger your memory to bring up your greater understanding of the card. But don’t let the keywords limit you! If the cards are “speaking” to us, why wouldn’t we treat it like a language?
Ways to Practice
(Heres a look at a couple of pages from an old bujo where I did dailies.)
Daily Pulls: When I first started reading tarot, I think the thing that most motivated me and kept me on track to learn all of the cards and develop my skills was doing a daily reading. I would draw one card every morning and then write down the card’s name, its meaning, and my interpretation of the card in context with my life in my bullet journal. This is definitely a good habit to have.
Deck Interviews: I’ll talk about deck interviews more in depth in a future post, but for now, I’ll just highlight them as good practice. Deck interviews are usually multi-card spreads, but they are simple questions about the deck’s strengths and weaknesses that are both useful and good practice for a beginner tarot reader.
Three Card Readings: Do three card readings! Do them for yourself, your SO, your dog, your cat, everyone! Why? This basic structure is so versatile for various groupings (Past, Present, Future; Problem, Solution; Setback, etc.), and it gives you a manageable number of cards to read so you get to practice reading tarot “sentences” without getting overwhelmed.
Meme Readings: Ok, let’s finish up with a fun one. I have a friend that I love to sit with for hours, going back and forth doing meme spreads. A favorite is a six card “what ____ thinks I am” reading (You know that meme right?) We also like to do a two card expectation vs. reality spread where we give each other situations and then pull cards for the expectation and the reality. Obviously we don’t gain any great insight from these readings, but they are fun and there’s no pressure from these readings like you might feel if you’re doing more “serious” readings.
