How to Write a Ritual

What is the purpose of the ritual?

Are you crafting a ritual for meditation? A spell? A sabbat? A lunar phase? The first part to writing a ritual is what type of ritual you’re wanting to write.

What do you want to include in a ritual?

Something that I always incorporate in my rituals is a shielding and meditative portion. I find that meditation and shielding is incredibly important to my ritual work, particularly if you’re working with deities or spirits.

Determine time, place, etc.

Determining the time, place, location, and so forth, of a ritual is incredibly important. When writing rituals, I also like to take into consideration day of the week, the weather, phase of the moon, and even the time. All of these can factor into the power and the energy of the ritual.

Cleansing and Protection

One of the most important factors, at least to me, is cleansing. I never, ever do a ritual without cleansing beforehand because I don’t know what kind of energy I’ll be bringing to the ritual. Cleansing is a good way of ridding myself of energy that won’t benefit me throughout my ritual.

Some practitioners (myself included) also like to cast circles prior to starting the ritual. If you’re unsure of how to cast a circle, here’s a pretty good video of protection (just be aware that the OP is a Wiccan and that does inform their craft!) OR here’s a great post by @themori-witch about warding! Reasons to ward can include the energy spilling out into an unprotected space (i.e. if you live in an apartment) and helps really focus the energy, or at least that’s my experience. Every witch’s experience is different!

Invoking/Summoning Entities and Using Energy

Some rituals will invoke or summon various entities (i.e. ancestors, guardians, elements, etc.). Determine prior to your ritual what kind of entity you’ll be invoking or summoning and determining that will help focus the energy of your ritual.

The same thing goes for what kind of energy you’ll be using. When I used to practice with a grove of Druids, we would invoke a lot of Norse divine energy and that energy is radically different compared to fey/fairy energy or even celestial/planetary energy. Determining how you’ll use this energy will help you figure out how you’ll raise your energy, which will help focus it. For example, when I work with Apollon in a solar ritual, I find that singing or dancing really helps focus that energy since he is a creative god.

Ritual Components

Decide on which components you’ll use in your ritual. This can include things like athames, candles, incense, poppets, animals, oils, herbs, etc.

Dissolving Protection/Circles and Resolution

Once your ritual is complete, you’ll want to take down the protections and also release the entities that you’ve invited. This is the perfect opportunity to provide an offering to the entities you worked with since entities ought to be thanked for their participation. Dissolving protections and circles also refers to cleaning up the mundane part of the ritual (i.e. disposing of cups or plates, etc.)

Signs a Romantic/Sexual Partner is a Spiritual Abuser

I’ve seen a lot of posts warning about cult leaders in the witchcraft community, but we also don’t talk enough about how partners can also be using their spirituality abusively.

They refuse to acknowledge cultural appropriation exists, no matter how much you tell them not to appropriate

They believe that you’re “fated to be together” (while this might not necessarily ALWAYS be a red flag, but one of my partners AND a person I’ve been talking to lately who is…most likely a cult leader have used this on me to try and get my closer to them)

Your suffering or your abuse doesn’t make you damaged goods because that means you got drawn to them.

Bragging that they’ve founded a secret society.

Claiming to be a god incarnate.

Using delusions about themselves and others to manipulate you into participating in their kink. (YOUR LIMITS ARE VALID! THEY ARE LIMITS FOR A REASON!)

Checking your knowledge on anything you say. Claiming they’re smarter than you and putting your own spiritual beliefs down and putting their own on a pedestal.

I’m sure I’ve missed signs so if there are any that I’ve missed, please feel free to add your own.

The doctrines of the spirit: Akh

A key term for understanding the Egyptian doctrines of the spirit is 3ḫ, Akh. Its hieroglyph represents a divine ibis and etymologically it points to “useful”, bright, good, illuminated. The classic translation is “effective spirit”. The Akh has the meaning of nobility, illumination, and spirituality; the intellect as a living entity, that is, it corresponds to the highest part of the correlate of consciousness and, consequently, to the most divine. As the Ba moves, it unfolds in the orbit of the Duat and the kingdom of Osiris, the Akh appears as the vehicle that the human develops to ascend to skyes and solar theology. And just as the Ba has some connection to the Shadow, Sheut, or Khaibit, the Akh also has a connection to another anthropological element: the Sah, which acts like the spiritual body.

Ptahhotep tells us that his main objective on earth is to become an Imakh. Imakh state means “blessed, worshiped, honored”, that is, being Imakh consists in attaining the highest wisdom, mastery of energy and knowledge of Ma’at, and also being in contact with the gods and the invisible and knowing its mysteries, the state of “Imakh” is interrelated as the evolutionary power of the Akh, therefore, it is the maximum development of the spiritual part of the human being.

Although the Imakh state was in principle only reserved for kings and gods, this concept was modified, and some people were able to obtain it, mainly through initiation and work. It is the highest expression of the “realized” human being who can attain the future life among the stars in life, and it seems from the texts that the evolution of Akh is easier to take place in the Duat, in the hereafter:

“Formula to open the grotto: Words spoken by (the deceased) “Oh great soul in prestige, here I am That I have come to see you. He crossed the other world, he saw my father Osiris dispersed the darkness of the night … I have become sahu I have become Akh I have equipped myself (aper) Oh, all of you gods and Akhs make a way for me … ”

From this quote and others such as the Pyramid Texts, we can deduce that the spiritual correlate that Akh means in post-mortem human consciousness survives death and directs the evolution and reflection of the deceased in transit through the Duat. The post-mortem evolution of Akh reaches its fullness when the transformations, the gates, and the judgment of Osiris and the Negative Confessions are overcome. Once the deceased has passed through the main gates of the Underworld and ascends to the solar boat, he becomes Imakh, that is, a blessed one who lives with the gods and can dialogue with them and even influence earth affairs as gods. Furthermore, the Akh is long-lasting and eternal and does not show the danger of extinction or paralysis.

The Akh is often thematized along with the Sahu, in a way that specifically the Sahu lends it a certain bodily form. The Sahu ideogram points in general terms to the reorganization of the members and the renewal of life. The texts where the Sahu appears reinforce the thesis that the Sahu implies a reorganization of the body, but this time not physical but spiritual, psychic, since the agreement with the Egyptian mentality can develop spiritually, affecting the mummified body in the tomb. The Sahu lends power and, through germination in the grave, it becomes an incorruptible body, a difference from the physical body or Khat from which it has emerged.

Hey, sorry to bother you, but a while ago you posted a recipe for honey lavender bread and I have a follow up question. Is the egg in the ingredient list for the egg wash or do I mix it with the other ingredients for the dough? I’d really appreciate an answer, I’m really looking forward to baking this on Friday

Hey -- so this recipe was originally posted about a year ago. I’m no longer part of the server where the recipe was posted from and I’m not sure if the member that made it is still in the server. As far as I know, the egg is for the egg wash and I know some people have tried this recipe and posted their results in the notes so be sure to check those too!

          Witches Against White Supremacy

As the current political climate worsens and the #BLM protests continue, I wanted to become more politically active and help support protestors as best I can from where I live. In an effort to do this, I started the sideblog, Witches Against White Supremacy.

The premise of this sideblog is to help aid the bail out funds across the United States and help anti-racism and anti-fascist efforts.

How does this work?

Easy: donate a minimum of $5.00 USD to any of the fundraisers listed in our Navigation, submit a photo (blurring out any sensitive information minus your name OR receipt number) to our blog confirming the amount donated, and you’ll receive a divination reading by one of our moderators. Once you’ve submitted this, send us an ask stating that you donated, the amount you donated, along with your blog URL so we can verify your donation. Once you’ve done so, one of our moderators will claim your reading and we will queue the reading. Readings will be published 4 times a day. If you have any questions, feel free to send us an ask but PLEASE do not submit Anonymous questions for the donation verification.

thrifty lush tips and tricks

Lush is one of my absolute favourite companies. Their practices are incredibly ethical and they believe in paying for their ingredients fairly, not to mention they are incredibly active political activists as well as donate a lot to charity (they have supported to date almost 2500 different charities). While I do believe that their prices are truly worth it, the reality is that not all of us can afford Lush’s prices, so I made this post for people that want to support Lush as best they can while also getting the most out of their products.

if you’re wanting to try out some of Lush’s toners, instead of buying Breath of Fresh Air, Eau Roma, or Tea Tree Water, consider buying one of their steamer tabs: Tea Tree or Dream Steam. Dream Steam is intended as a more calming and soothing steam (for sensitive skin) whereas Tea Tree is intended more for oilier skin. After you use the steamer tab, bottle up the water you popped the tab in and you can keep it in your fridge to use as a toner water. Note: when I worked at Lush, we were told not to keep it for longer than a week but just keep an eye on it!

the fresh face masks are a god send. Literally. They’ve helped my skin so much, especially Catastrophe Cosmetic and Cosmetic Warrior. A face mask pot will typically last up to two weeks in your fridge because all of the ingredients are really fresh, but if you don’t use face masks all that often, you can put the face mask in your freezer and it’ll extend the shelf life a bit.

building off of the above tip, you can also do the same with the facial cleansers (specifically Dark Angels, Let the Good Times Roll, Herbalism, Angels on Bare Skin, and Aqua Marina). I used to buy the big pots (the custom ones) with a fair bit of the fresh cleanser in it and only take some out at a time.

if you want to buy a bath bomb to treat yourself and you find yourself a little concerned about the one time use of a bath bomb, you can always break the bath bomb apart with a hammer and sprinkle in a little bit at a time in your bath. You’ll still get the aromatherapy benefits and you’ll extend the use of your bath bomb!

while using up the entire bubble bar is VERY tempting (I really like bubbles okay), you’ll get REALLY BIG BUBBLES. seriously. it’s nuts. but bubble bars aren’t meant as one time use products. You can either cut it up into bits and keep it in a container and crumble a little bit at a time under the faucet while you’re drawing your bath, or you can just break off chunks (I do the latter because I’m a lush gremlin) to use. I highly recommend bubble bars. They just enhance that bath experience

just like you can break up bath bombs and bubble bars, I’d highly recommend cutting up the bath oils, too! They’re intensely hydrating so if you live in a more humid climate, it might make your skin feel a little oily and one way to combat this is just use a smaller piece of the bath oil. It might take a little trial and error to see how much is the perfect amount for you but experiment!

similarly, if you live in a hotter climate and you decide to splurge on a shower jelly, slam that bugger in your freezer and take it out just before you hop in the shower. it feels delightfully cooling and it’s a little firmer so it doesn’t slip and slide everywhere.

if you want to try some of the hair care from Lush and don’t want to buy the big ol’ bottles of shampoo and conditioner, you can always opt to try one of their solid shampoos and conditioners! There’s a really wide variety to choose from and they’re usually less than $10 (unless you’re getting one of the custom cuts like Trichomania and Avocado Co-Wash), plus they last for 80+ washes.

on the note of the shampoo bars and solid conditioners, LET THEM DRY OUT IN BETWEEN USES AND DON’T KEEP THEM IN YOUR SHOWER!!!! I used to use a discontinued bar before I switched to Wasabi Shan Kui and I lost many a bar because I just kept them in the shampoo bar tin in the shower. The excess water will find its way into the tin and melt the shampoo bar. I’d recommend getting a soap dish and letting the bars dry out in there on a shelf in your bathroom.

if you don’t have a bathtub or don’t like baths, try the shower bombs! Right now, Lush only has three (my favourite is Sleepy) but they’re really great. You can use them as aromatherapy and as a shower gel! I cut mine up into quarters or halves (depending on how much scent I want to get) and then let it foam underneath my showerhead and then lather.

if you decide to splurge on one of their lotions, a little goes a loooooooong way. Don’t overuse the lotion: your skin will feel oily and slick and that’s one of the problems that people who return lotions say. Use a little at a time (i.e. maybe a pinky fingernail’s worth) and you can always build up the moisture.

conversely, if you want to try one of their lotions but balk at the price (they are a little pricey), you can always treat yourself to one of the massage bars! they’re basically solid lotions

I know the Gorgeous moisturizer feels great on your face. I Know. But also it’s $90 CAD. It’s worth it IF you can afford it, but the other moisturizers work just as well. You just need to know what kind your skin wants. A good all purpose one is Cosmetic Lad

DO NOT USE PUMICE POWER ON ANYTHING BESIDES YOUR FEET!!!!!!!!!!! You will ruin your skin.

Bath oils aren’t soap. You will dye yourself funky colours.

Please don’t eat the Fresh Face Mask displays. You don’t know whose hands have been in there.

Don’t use Wiccy Magic Muscles in the shower. You will grow a plant in your drain. The “beans” aren’t coffee beans; they are aduki beans and they help target achy spots in your body.

Pink Peppermint is a great foot cream but it has arnica in it, which is GREAT for sore muscles. I use it on my fucked up shoulder and back.

Lush has ONE sale a year. ONE. And it is NOT on Black Friday; it’s on Boxing Day (December 26) because they are a UK based company (although they have kitchens in a few locations in North America). Their regular stock items won’t go on sale (i.e. shampoo bars, cleansers, etc.), BUT their holiday stock (usually Christmas) will go on sale for Buy One Get One Free. Unless you like crowds, I’d urge you against going into the store on Boxing Day, but if you do decide to go, literally show up at opening. The sale is absolutely nuts (I’ve worked it) and by like 10 AM, there will be barely anything left. Your other option is to use the Lush website, but be prepared that it has the habit of crashing.

Fiber Associations

I’ve been trying to draft a list of elemental fiber associations for fiber craft witches, and its difficult because it can be so arbitrary. For some, animal fibers may be a connection to spirit, while plant fibers may be connected to earth. Some people connect warmer fibers like wool to fire, while I’ve seen others associate cotton with fire because it grows in such sunny and hot conditions. Ultimately, what you believe is much more important than what some witch on the internet tells you. That said, here’s a set of ideas for you to dabble with:

Cotton

Fire: Cotton grows in incredibly hot and sunny conditions

Earth: As a plant fiber, it grows in the earth

Animal Fibers (Wool, Angora, Alpaca, Etc.)

Fire: These fibers are often the warmest. Indeed, most fiber growing animals must be shorn before summer because they could over heat in an unhealthy manner if they were forced to carry their coats

Air: Some lighter animal fibers, like angora, are whispy and light, like air

Earth: These animals are almost always herbivores, creatures of the earth

Spirit: You can, if you so chose, evoke the qualities of the animal, or just the fact that it comes from a living creature

Bamboo

Earth: As a plant fiber, it grows in the earth

Water: Bamboo can live in the water

Air: Bamboo can grow exceptionally tall

Fire: Bamboo is shockingly warm for a plant fiber, and may have some cleansing, antibacterial properties

Silk

Earth: As an insect fiber, silk carries the spirit of small creatures that live in trees and usually mimic leaves

Air: Silk is incredibly light; Additionally, most silk comes from the larvae of silk moths, which are flying creatures

Spirit: You can, if you so chose, evoke the qualities of the animal, or just the fact that it comes from a living creature

Fire: Most silk comes from insects that are killed using heat or fire before the silk fibers from their cocoons are harvested

Man Made Fibers (Rayon, Acrylic, Etc.)

Spirit: An excellent representation of the ingenuity of humanity, as they are made by us

Earth: Many acrylic fibers are made of recycled materials, and could be used to represent our concern for and connection to the earth

Of course, sometimes price and practicality win out and you use what you have. In that case, chose what you can get, what will work, and perhaps play with color and patterns. And remember: always consider fiber care!

Hi, it's the trans anon. Other people are saying that while you're on your period it's a good idea to work with female Goddesses like hera and aphrodite, etc because of periods being connected to feminine energies and fertility. But as a trans guy I don't want that. Are there any gods that can help me feel more masculine during this time? And I've heard that Dionysus is trans but when I've tried researching that I can't find a thing about it

Well firstly let me clear something up. Society may lump Aphrodite and Hera in the “feminine” category but they are way beyond feminime and masculine. They are gods after all. Those labels we put on them.

Aphrodite especially isn’t just a procreation goddess. She’s a war goddess and a death goddess. She rules over political military aspects. And she’s trans herself. Aphroditus is her male form.

Not to mention her procreation side isn’t just about birthing children. It’s about birthing new ideas, new art, new expressions, new relationships, new music, new fashion, new inspirations.

So as you can see tho people like to portray Aphrodite strictly through a feminine lens, she’s anything but!

Dionysus is trans and is seen with Aphrodite as being the protectors of the trans community. Their origin myth and the fact that they were always portrayed as androgynous has lead people to believe Dionysus is trans.

But if what you’re looking for is BAM in your face healthy masculinity then I totally recommend Ares or Apollo!

Ares is great if you want like an ultra masculine version of Aphrodite. Super supportive, super stoked about self-care and self acceptance, super gentle, and ready to protect you with his life. He’s the best!

And Apollo is the guardian of boys so he’ll look after you and help you feel more masculine and comfortable in your body when you need it!

I was reading up on Aphroditus and I saw on Wikipedia that it said:

“Aphroditus is the same as the later god Hermaphroditos, whose name is a combinations of his parents Aphrodite and Hermes…”

It seems less like Aphroditus is the male form of Aphrodite but the son of Aphrodite? But Aphroditus is intersex. I’m still trying to figure out the Aphrodite and Aphroditus are the same person but I’m reading that they’re not…

It’s believed that Aphroditus might have eventually evolved into Hermaphroditus. But I’ve never seen any indication that Aphroditus is specifically a child of Aphrodite. I see them as being more of an aspect of Aphrodite. Also that Wikipedia page specifically calls Aphroditus “a male Aphrodite” as opposed to a “child of Aphrodite”.

✨Selkies✨🧜‍♀️

Orginating from Scottish and Irish folklore (most commonly Shetland and Orkney, Scotland), these mythical sea creatures are often grouped in with the merfolk category. The word Selkie means “seal folk“ or “seal people” as they can transform into humans when they shed their seal skin, making them shapeshifters. Similar creatures are found in Scandinavian and Icelandic folklore and often compared to the legend of the swan maiden.

They are often portrayed as sea maidens in romance stories. They maiden hides her seal skin from her land lover but as she lives on land she yearns for her life in the sea. It is said Selkies have a rule of seven, they can only transform for a maximum of 7 years before returning to the sea or only transform every seven years. It is also common in these tales that the man steals her seal skin so she becomes his wife and bares him children. Her longing for the water grows and grows until she leaves her family to return. Children who are born from a selkie often have webbed fingers, pale or greenish skin and strange longing for the ocean. 

A superstition in old Scotland was when people were in need of resources they would harvest seal skin and blubber but it was seen as unlucky to kill seals. Stories of misfortune often falling onto the killer. 

The selkies assume form of the seals found in the cold waters of the Britsh Isles often brown or greyish in colour. The Selkies skin was their most valuable treasure and if to lose their skin meant they could not return to their watery home. Selkies are considered a type of water faerie or spirit and are seen as fallen angels/angels of the ocean.

They are probably one of the kinder species of sea folk compared to other folklores. Selkies are curious and kind creatures but in some stories are seen as seducers who draw humans to their watery deaths. Male selkies were seen as very attractive in human form (along with females) and for a lover to summon one, they must cry seven tears into the ocean.

🕯️ Imbolc Correspondences 🕯️

Imbolc is one of the sabbats of the Wheel of the Year celebrated from February 1st to February 2nd. Imbolc is also known as Candlemas and Brighid’s Day.

Imbolc is one of the four fire festivals. The other fire festivals are: Beltaine, Litha, and Samhain. For Celtic pagans, Imbolc is a celebration that honours the deity, Brighid/Brigid, but for non-Celtic pagans, Imbolc is a response to Yule. Where Yule was the darkest day of the year, Imbolc is the celebration of light and the darker days of the year coming to an end. It’s the welcoming of spring.

Other names for Imbolc include Brighid’s Day, Oimelc, and Candlemas. In Norse paganism/heathenry, you can celebrate Imbolc as Disablót, which thewitchofthenorse talks about in this post.

Note: In the Catholic tradition, Imbolc is called Candlemas and honours the St. Bridget. I am not Catholic and this is the sum of my Catholic knowledge. I’m sure there are other resources on Catholicism’s take on Imbolc on Google and I don’t want to do a disservice to Catholocism by claiming to know information I don’t.

Now with that disclaimer, Imbolc is a sabbat about renewal and cleansing, bringing the light back in our lives as we turn to spring. Imbolc was traditionally a festival surrounding fertility and livestock breeding.

Brighid/Brigid

In Celtic polytheism, Brigid is a goddess who we saw in fertility rites and oversaw poetry, childbirth, healing, crafts, and prophecy. She was the daughter of the Dagda and the oldest god in the Tuatha du Danaan. She also had two sisters named Brigid. Sources that Brigid appears in are the Cath Maige Tuired and the Lebor Gabála Érenn. Brigid is associated with fire, milk, and grain.

Ways to Celebrate Imbolc

🧹 Spring cleaning! 🔥  Fire scrying! 🧶 Make a Brigid’s Cross! You can hang the cross above your front door! I know Pagans who have used the cross as a form of protection! 🍳 Cook a meal with foods associated with Imbolc! Milk and breads are two of those. I’ll be posting an Imbolc pancake mix in the coming days as well which I’ll link to after I do some recipe testing! 🎆 Set up an Imbolc altar! Use colours like green, red, white, gold! You could also print off some poetry (maybe Gaelic?) or write a poem that you can dedicate to Brigid! You could also decorate with some flowers, like crocuses, daffodils, and snowdrops. I also read an article where someone crafted a small flower crown that imitates Brigid’s crown and combine it with fireless candles or some fairy lights! 🍞 Bake some bread! I personally practice a lot of kitchen witchcraft and baking bread is one of the ways that I celebrate sabbats.

Correspondences of Imbolc

Animals: Bears, deer, groundhogs, sheep and lambs.

Colours: White, green, red, gold, blue.

Herbs and Spices: Chamomile, lavender, poppyseed, acorns, rosemary, frankincense, jasmine, cinnamon, nutmeg.

Other Deities: Demeter, Gaia, Hestia, Vesta. I’ve also seen sources say Persephone, Proserpina, Cerridwen, Cernunnos, Eros, Osiris, and Pan.

Foods: Eggs, milk, grains and breads, white meats, cheese, oats, honey, brandy or whiskey (or other liquors), spiced wine, spicy foods, scones.

Crystals: Fluorite, Tiger’s Eye, Black Tourmaline, Sodalite, Citrine, Amethyst, Onyx, Bloodstone, Icelandic Feldspar.

a coin, if it helps you

instructions:

create each one simple sigil for representing the 5 elements

draw each sigil in coin size on paper and cut them out round

heat up your wax with a spoon and candle and start creating

when all five sigil pockets are done you can start charging!
