the next room is different. not only in terms of its layout of three walls and a hallway that juts sharply to the right, but also in the the things that inhabit it.
there are three chairs of the same make arranged in a triangle in the center of the room. one has an extra leg, sticking out at an odd angle. there is a litter of pens scattered here and there, some fused entirely into the walls or floors. they have the logo and name of some bank, but the print is backwards and makes the words painful to read.
there is a watercooler in the corner, one that seems like the same one from the bullpen. the red and blue levers are reversed.
a voice chimes from down the hallway.
full of static and bursts of white noise, it repeats one word over and over again, just in different languages.
hello.
a caveman cutout stands tall and proud amongst the yellow walls, clutching a two dimensional spear. a speaker in its chest cycles through the simple greeting over and over again, to the point that all the languages blend together into something incomprehensible.
thick white cables trail from the back of the caveman, through a thin gap in one of the walls that makes the architecture seem even more bizarre. another streams out from the gap, rising to the corner.
there is a small, white camera watching him, its mechanical pupil dilating.
a thump resonates from somewhere behind him, followed by the faint schiiiffff-shiiiifffff-shiiiiffffff of uneven footsteps.
"The sky was blood red and filled with smoke. And through it a devil appeared, its face was twisted with rage and hatred. When it was over my parents were gone. I will never forget the wretched cries of the dead..."

it becomes aware of the fresh things slowly, a dull ache pulsing through everything it is and everything it will be. it struggles to remember, to picture their features in its mind's eye.
there are other things it has tried to remember in the room the human and eridian now dwell in. a line of shoes; sneakers, boots, sandals, stick out from the floor in a perfectly straight line- seemingly fused into the carpet itself. they vary in being set to a left or right foot, but there is only one half of a pair for each one.
they lead to a door. it has a knob on the left and a knob on the right, one twisted at a strange angle. an instillation flaw, surely.
it starts to remember them.
the other side of the door holds a larger room, one of the walls appearing a tad more concave than the others. there is a window embedded in it. if it can even be called a window. it was just the frame, more of that filthy yellow wall in place of glass.
then it gets stranger and stranger still.
there is a fox mask with four eyeholes on the floor. a mimic of the xenonite puppet of grace- five of them in total, actually -with warped limbs or too many heads. one barely resembles a human figure any more.
a door creaks open in another hallway, the loudest sound they've had yet to hear.
T-Rex in the backrooms
Why did God create a dual universe? So he might say, Be not like me. I am alone. And it might be heard. —–- Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves.
BACKROOMS (2026) dir. Kane Parsons
@eidetic187 got lost in the backrooms.
it starts with a simple step. one foot in front of the other, walking through the familiar territory of the bau offices. then the world falls away, spirals and turns to yellow.
a sickly off-yellow. the walls reek of mold and a humid damp, though the temperature of the complex is mild. the room he's in has two doors parallel to one another. both are deep brown, mahogany maybe.
one of the doors has two brass knobs side by side.
there is a bicycle in the ceiling, only one wheel and the handlebars sticking downward. the rest is fused to the florescent lights, as if the roof and vehicle are one in the same.
the silence is deafening. not even the lights above seem to buzz and hum with electricity. and yet, the walls seem to breathe. not in the way a human would fill their lungs with air and exhale.
this is something else.
it feels like someone is watching him.
everywhere at the end of time
okay so here's my take on what the backrooms are- now this is my own personal take sprinkled in with some of my own lore.
the complex itself is yes, everything that ever was- but it is also alive in a sense. a great cosmic being whose mind is corroding bit by bit. the more it remembers, the less it does. everything that this unaware thing has remembered (and misremembered) and has turned into a strange ecosystem.
movie spoilers under the cut.
up in the club, getting a commission of coli done. hell yeah.
@mayoinomori fell into the backrooms.
the smell of mildew is pungent. it seems to be a fitting smell, given the sickly off-yellow color of the wallpaper that decorate every nook and cranny.
everything seems painfully stagnant, the air stale. the room is simple in hindsight. three walls leaning to a hallway that careens to the right. there's a chair on the floor, partially fused sideways into the carpeting like they are one in the same.
a stop sign protrudes from the left wall, tilted at an angle. the words STOP are printed backwards.
the silence is unsettling.
the walls seem to breathe, but at the same time, they seem dead and rotting.
something is watching.
