PLURIBUS · The Gap
Trista Mateer, from a poem featured in her collection titled The Dogs I Have Kissed
An absence that lingers.
It’s endlessly amusing to me that the first thing my new therapist told me to do was write
I’ve spend so much time avoiding writing, like it would prevent the things I feel from being real, or taking root too deeply
Perhaps by not giving them space, I’ve made them more real than anything. Funny how that works
I’ve carried you with me to so many places; you wouldn’t believe the miles we’ve traveled together, all these years
It’s hard sometimes to think about how much time I’ve spent learning how to let things go, and I still haven’t quite mastered letting go of you
August has come to an end
I don’t feel any better
than I did in May.
I think I wasted the summer thinking about you.
I have thousand things to say to you and a thousand reasons not to.
