I've been looking for some arts and crafts project that I can sell, and I was honestly out of ideas. But after reading this article on how to recycle old wine bottle corks, EUREKA! Why not recycle these corks and turn them into some cash cow with just simple crafting materials. Luckily enough, my best friend works at a fancy restaurant and I'm sure I can ask him to save those corks for my money-making project and Mother Earth. 

The horizontal cork board sounds easy enough but it's something that even a 10-year-old can do so that might be a hard sell. The cork flooring idea is brilliant and I will consider that when we redesign our living room. The jewelry holder looks promising and I just need to recycle an old picture frame and buy some hooks and pushpins from the crafts store. Easy peasy! I'm sure I can sell this on etsy.com or maybe to my Facebook friends. 

Anyway, wish me luck on my latest project! I'm not exactly origami level but I think the instructions are simple enough for me to do on my own.

Daughter's Birthday

My daughter just turned thirteen. Needless to say, she’s suddenly gotten into everything girly, including make up, hair accessories and jewelry. We were all surprised at this sudden interest, since she had been a tomboy all her life.

Her first passion will always be sports; volleyball, softball, soccer…she’s played them all. She always wanted to play football and was adamant for quite some time that she would. She loves going to watch football games with her dad. It’s kind of designated as “their time”. Her birthday was coming up and her father and I wanted to get her something special; something that could somehow merge both worlds. We found the perfect gifts on sooner planet.

A gravel driveway back to the pool!

For me, gravel is one of the most elegant surfaces you can have. It looks good, it’s cheap and it adds security… a burglar creeping up your driveway in the early hours of the morning will find it difficult not to be heard. Or if you're like me and you want to have it run back out to your shed and swimming pool, or break into your shed and nab your collection of pool supplies (I buy mine from www.swimtownpools.com). It also lets you know if your kids, pets or anyone else is headed out for an ill advised swim.

Usually a mix of course sand and small stones works best on a firm surface. Available in various sizes and shades.

You will need approximately 1 ton of gravel to cover 15 square metres. The sub base for a drive or path should be 100mm of compacted hardcore topped by 20 mm of sand.

I would say that the only problems with gravel are that it can be difficult to push things over it and you’ll need to rake it over now again to keep it tidy. Also, have some consideration as to how you’re going to keep the weeds away…if you don't your lovely driveway will become an eyesore before you know it.

A Miraculous Call

Earlier this week was the anniversary of the Miracle on Ice. It was February 22, 1980 when the scrappy USA team beat the USSR 4-3 in Lake Placid, New York. In 2010, the 30th anniversary of the event, Joe Posnanski wrote about some little known facts concerning the hockey game. Facts like how the game was not broadcast live, people viewing from their home were on a tape delay. Posnanski also uncovered some interesting tidbits about Al Michaels and his signature line:

“Do you believe in miracles? Yes!”

It was a perfect call. Goosebumps. It’s further heightened by the fact that it’s followed by a minute of crowd noise. The next thing Michaels says is, “No words necessary just pictures.” Damn, he’s good. Here’s what’s interesting, we almost didn’t get this line. Michaels said that if he had thought of the line before the moment it happened he never would have used it. It was a spur of the moment thing, it just came out.
