What do you feed nerite snails? I've heard they eat veggies, can I feed cucumber to one?

You’ve got great timing anon! :D I put a softened cucumber into my tank for my nerites yesterday ^-^ but they haven’t touched it yet ;n; I think I’ll leave it in for another day or two before I take it out tho…if they end up eating it, I’ll let you know! :p

Nerites LOVE algae and biofilm tho! :p I’ve heard you can grow algae by setting smooth stones in a bowl of water by a window~ Someone who was doing this for their otos suggested it, but I haven’t tried it myself. If you do, share your results! :p

You can also feed your snails algae wafers (usually a hit with my snails) and cuttlebone (for extra calcium).

For fresh foods + veggies you can make snello or see if your snails will take to zucchini, sweet potato (this seems to be a crowd favorite from what I’ve seen in snail groups :O), cucumber, kale, or broccoli! :p

What do y’all feed your snails? Any additions or corrections to the list of veggies here? :p

my apple snails love blanched cucumbers, carrots, and today i gave them yellow squash which they devoured.

but does anybody have recommendations besides the cuddlebone to add calcium? i’ve tried cuddlebone but my apple snails wouldn’t go near it :(

To add some extra calcium to your tank for your snails you can: - add some (berry) tums!* - add some liquid calcium!** - add some crushed calcium carbonate!**I - make some snello

A basic Snello tutorial for y’all! :D

*ONLY use the berry tums! not mint or another flavor! The equate tums shown in this video should also be safe!

** Adding liquid calcium or crushed calcium carbonate will most likely affect your water parameters, so keep an eye on them!

@hella-free-space i always blanch any vegetables i add to my tanks, i think it makes it easier for the snails to eat it. and thanks for the snello tutorial, i’m definitely going to make that soon!

I figured the cumber I added was squishy enough, but when I took it out of the tank 2 or 3 days later, it was pretty solid and hadn’t really broken down/become mushy :/ so I’ll definitely be properly blanching anything I feed the snails from now on! :) And you’re welcome :D share your results!

Time and space is happening.

Animals lived on ground for only 550,000,000 years, while underwater life existed for billions of years. Also the ground is only 30% of the Earth and height wise it’s only as tall as some tall trees unless you’re flying. Also many places on the ground are deserts and thus don’t have water to support much life.

The ocean on the other hand is 70% of the Earth’s surface, has depths of down to 10+ kms, and most of those depths can support life, so there’s a lot more variety in the types of animals you can see while on the ground most animals stick to 20-30 different basic survival strategies.

Years ago I made the personal decision to stop eating octopus and squid at sushi restaurants. I honestly and truthfully believe them to be as intelligent as we are, just in different *directions*.

My mom and her wife volunteer as docents at the Hatfield Marine Center in Newport, OR. The Center catches, studies, and releases great Pacific octopuses every 6-8 weeks. Longer than that is considered cruel. Male octopuses don’t live very long - females live longer, but only until they lay a clutch of eggs. Then they starve to death protecting their hatchlings.

Depriving them of too much time is like solitary for DECADES for a human.

And the Hatfield treats them as close to people-in-different-shapes as possible. Octopuses learn individuals. Docents they like, they hug (since they taste through the sensors in their suction pads). Docents they don’t like they squirt with jets of water - and everyone knows that’s valid, and that docent is reassigned.

When the time period is up, the Hatfield takes the octopus in question out to the bay and releases him/her back to the sea. It’s a testament to their treatment that the animals tend to hug everyone goodbye, then swim away slowly. They form attachments.

I think they’re smart. I think their smarts involve their lives underwater, and not our technological world in the air - so they don’t LOOK smart to US.

I want to be kind and gentle with them. I wish I could talk to them and hear what they say to each other. I wish I could understand how they perceive and conceptualize the world - because it has to be SOMEWHAT similar to the way we do - look how their camouflage looks like how WE perceive the animals they’re pretending to be.

Cuttlefish and octopuses are badass. They’re incredibly intelligent and emotional creatures. I highly, HIGHLY recommend reading Sy Montgomery’s The Soul of an Octopus (a National Book Award Finalist BTW). It is an astounding read, a look into the people who work with and study octopuses along with the emotional behavior of these amazing animals.

I love Cephalopods. They’ve helped us redefine a lot of our cognitive boundaries, and are the exception to the rules on researching invertebrates! They have special rules to separate them from clams and fruit flies and all those other animals without backbones, because even though cephalopods don’t have spines, and we are genetically closer to goldfish than we are to them, cephalopods have sophisticated intelligence and emotions and we respect that.

I have been a cat owner my whole life and I literally never knew that tiger lilies and stargazers were also highly toxic to cats. Even drinking the water from the vase that lilies are in can kill the cat! I brought in a tiger lily from our yard today and just thought to look it up and found out (and of course removed the lily from our house as soon as I saw). How scary!

On the topic of betta fish:

Hi, I live in Thailand (once called “Siam”). It seems like there is a big, popular understanding about where you’ll find wild “Siamese fighting fish” aka “betta fish” in Thailand. Apparently, the common North American (and European?) idea is that you’ll find beta fish in places like this:

I can understand this misconception, especially if you’ve never experienced what our monsoon seasons are like, nor have ever seen a rice field before… among many other things. The fact is, you’ll never see betta fish in such tiny bodies of water. I have seen tadpoles in small puddles like these… and, in shallow gutters/”khlongs”, I have even found little guppies and fresh water crabs. But try as I might (and I have really tried), I have not once found a single betta fish in these kinds of environments. Betta fish naturally occur in these kinds of environments:

Yes, the water can be shallow (knee-deep), but the territory is often wide, vast, and dense with soft, vertical growing foliage. The water is not stagnant like in a puddle, nor is it barren with wide open space. In this environment, a wild betta fish has many hiding opportunities. I can only assume that betta fish do not naturally occur in small puddles (be it in the jungle or otherwise), or within Khlongs/gutters–because it is not an optimal environment for them and they cannot survive it. Please note that I do not, nor have ever raised betta fish. I have only looked to admire them in the wild and these are my observations. As someone who raises a variety of wild/’exotic’ animals, I have found it critical to the animals health and behavior–to recreate their natural environment as closely as possible, while omitting natural dangers from the set-up. Doing so will allow your animal to exhibit its full range of natural behaviors, and exist optimally. For you, this means being able to watch your animal preform behaviors and show off colors you might never have had the chance to see, otherwise. I my opinion, this is much more rewarding than spending time, energy, and emotions into trying to defend a tiny, barren, and stagnant fishbowl set up.

a) The Russell’s viper has phospolyphasic venom, a very rare venom amongst snakes, and unless you live in southeast asia, you will not encounter a snake with this kind of venom. b) only about 14% of all snake species are venomous c) The picture above is of a King Cobra, therefore not in Australia. d) More people are killed by fridges every year than snakes.
