ALBUM OF THE WEEK: July 26 - August 1

Braids, Deep in the Iris (2015), released via Arbutus and Flemish Eye

Deep in the Iris is a whimsical indie album with 9 beautiful tracks. All of the songs tie in very well together, fitting the same kind of theme. Their pull you in with their unique mix of instruments and synthesizers. Raphael Standell-Preston’s voice is sure to put you in a trance and want you to hear more. I saw this band perform live, and the vibe of them and all of their songs are so incredible. I highly recommend this album.

Pothole - Modern Baseball, You’re Gonna Miss It All (2013), released via Run For Cover Records

The fossils of my footsteps will be unearthed at a far-off date unknown. Impressed in concrete from walking home alone after walking you home. And the mops of greasy hair will romanticize my despair, but they won’t know that I didn’t care. I like the silence, I like the empty streets, crawl down them on hands and knees in a heartbeat if I had to. I owe them that at the very least. The map had faded out, but I could’ve sworn I noted every stride. I guess the rain hit before the ink could dry. And where I thought I’d be, was not what I perceived assessing the progress from beneath your sheets. That’s why I need the silence, I need the empty streets, just as bad as they don’t need me. It’s a sick, sad shame of a marriage, but it’s all there is, it’s all I need. I can be everything you need, if you make me. I can be every crack in your concrete, if you let me off easy. I can be easily deceived if you want that. But you are the ember of my heart, whether you like that or not.

Jamie xx, In Colour (2015), released via Young Turks

In Colour is an experimental electronic album packed with eleven diverse tracks that are sure to get stuck in your head. Being Jamie xx’s debut studio album, the complexity and sophistication is impressive. I’ve been listening to this album a lot since it came out in May, and I’m still going strong. Each of the tracks carry their own individual style, while still flowing together well as a whole album. I have yet to meet someone that is disappointed by it.
