seeing a lot of really valid takes about how horrible Bear is to Nikki, how he forces her into a situation where she’s trapped in a body and desire she doesn’t want, and how he refuses to let her escape it. i really agree with those takes.

but did anyone also see it as a representation of bpd? maybe it’s just me, but the desperation of having the “favorite person” love you, the mood switches, the fear of abandonment - i totally thought that was what was happening.

i even thought that the moments where Real Nikki broke through that it was a sort of moment of clarity - someone with bpd going “wait a minute, this isn’t what i want, this isn’t me, i don’t want to be like this.” that maybe on an allegorical level, his was a person with bpd allowing a relationship with a favorite person to become romantic even though that’s not what they really want.

and of course Bear, who is deeply depressed and isolated, is drawn to the idea of obsession and complete devotion. he’s fine with it, for a time. it doesn’t make what he did better, though - if anything, it makes it worse. two deeply unhealthy people using each other as coping mechanisms.

idk, i’m not a bpd/depression expert. what did other people think?

bro I can’t stop thinking about the movie obsession like, the horror of Nikki’s life….

Plus the absolute APATHY bear has for the consequences of his wish, he just sees her as girlfriend placeholder like SO MANY MEN DO because they can like a persons personality but if deep down all they really want is a fuck toy, they’ll disregard you, your wants, your needs, and autonomy to fuck you. Even if it’s hurting you, because his needs are more important than yours, of course! How can we forget our place as women!! :)

Fucking asshole fails every opportunity to fix his mistake and creates so much collateral damage to his friends… I have a modicum of sympathy for when he makes his wish bc who would think that would work, he was having a pity party, but every decision after that night was him digging the hole in deeper for Nikki. that scene at the beginning of obsession where bear is driving nikki home and they're talking about the story she's writing. she says she's writing a love story, not a romance, and bear laughs and says "what's the difference?"

nikki responds with something to the effect of "you're the only person i feel like i can talk to about this." bear seems to take it as a compliment, but imo, nikki's grim tone signals that what she really meant was "you're the only person i can talk to about this, so please take me seriously." bear isn't interested in what she has to say, he's just infatuated with her as a concept

When given the hypothetical of being alone in the woods with a random man or a bear, Nikki Freeman chose a bear. In reality, she was instead abducted by her closest male friend, Bear.

I just watched Obsession and I feel like Bear is too weird of a name not to have a second meaning but all I could think of his the man or bear question. Although he is presented as 'Bear', the part of him that's man is what fueled his cowardice and greed that directly ruined Nikki's life. This is why women continue to choose a bear lowercase b.

on my second viewing of obsession, i had the realization that nikki’s story at the party wasn’t the movie using incest as an easy shorthand for making the audience uncomfortable or creating a general “things are off” vibe but was another way the real nikki was crying out—a metaphor for the fact that nikki, like gretel, is being made to fuck her “little brother” (bear) under duress, at the behest of an external magic (the witch’s spell in her story; obviously, bear’s wish)

gonna go watch obsession in theaters. very excited to have meta thoughts after experiencing it on the big screen. for now i just wanna say that bear killing his cat through the negligence of his poor choices (re: leaving opioids lying around) is a BRILLIANT metaphor and piece of foreshadowing for like. literally Everything that's going to happen in his relationship with nikki.

Not only that, but in screenwriting there is a well known trope called "save the cat," wherein within the first act, you have your protagonist save a cat in order to establish their character and get the audience to like them (this can be any heroic or kind act on the characters part — though sometimes they literally save a cat).

One of the first things this film does is have Bear kill his cat.
