There’s a scene in Endwalker, in Elpis, where your character is getting ready to return to the present day and is saying goodbye to Venat. It is captioned, at one point “Your time in this age is drawing to a close.”

That caption was sufficiently vague enough for me to say “Baidar has been here for a year off camera.”

And that’s how an AU was born.

I boosted Baidar to both level 60 and to Stormblood, where I learned very quickly about the ilvl traps. Yeah, Yoshi P likes to say it’s okay to unsub until there’s new content. Thing is you either have to have enough gil to allow you to buy crafted gear to push your ilvl up (or have a bunch of max level crafting jobs), or get all the raid or tome gear to have the needed ilvl before you unsub.

It is laudable to say “you can take a break” but MMOs do punish you for doing so inherently. Even a new player has to plan around the ilvl increases in each post expac patch series.

Yes, this is me, still griping that I couldn’t hit 70 and go straight into the Monster Hunter World crossover, lol.

Admittedly they’re multiplayer online games, which have different life spans, but atm the two games I play the most are FFXIV and the just went into maintenance mode Destiny 2. ARR came out basically 13 years ago and D2 came out 9 years ago, with the franchise being 12 years old.

Hells if I still had my OG Xbox I’d STILL be playing Halo! Three years is old my ass!
