Chapter 9 of Paladin's Hope, and Piper is over here self censoring when he SHOULD be screaming this to the skies and everyone who will listen:
SAY IT AGAIN FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK. PREGNANCY IS NOT HEALTH NEUTRAL. WOMEN'S REPRODUCTIVE HEALTHCARE MATTERS.
And I'm going to go ahead and put these words in Piper's mouth, because women's reproductive healthcare includes abortion, and anyone trying to make abortion illegal is advocating for a net increase in the number of dead women in the world.
Ok, this is gonna be a long-ish one, so strap in. I am just completely and utterly delighted with Paladin's Hope taking a hard left into medical ethics, resurrection men, and the intersection of my nerdy medical humanities interests. Because Piper is over here being HELLA unethical by allowing a local...I'm gonna go ahead and use the term cunning woman...cunning woman practice techniques to repair vaginal fistulas anytime an appropriate body crosses his morgue slab. This is done without the permission of either the person whose body it is OR their family.
Piper comes right out and says this is unethical:
"It's not ethical, and I know it, and god help me, it genuinely is a slippery slope. Start thinking you have the right to do things to people's bodies in a good cause, and you're halfway to hell and picking up speed. But I also don't know what I could have done differently. [...] I've asked the Bishop about how we could do it, if we could offer financial compensation in return, but that ends up with poor families selling their loved one's cadavers or even more people selling them for money, and it's just...really not a good idea."
And for context, this has happened historically. The closest examples to what Piper is actively doing are probably King Louis XIV's doctor experimenting on 75 live butts that almost certainly did not consent to it before treating the king's anal fistula and the long, storied history of North American gynecological research, which has its roots in J. Marion Sims's stupidly unethical experimentation on enslaved women. Piper KNOWS this could be the reality. He knows he's on the slippery slope to literally these realities.
And yet. He's doing it, because women's reproductive healthcare MATTERS. It is important to be able to help women and improve their quality of life and health. The messiness of this is one of my favorite parts of this book, and frankly, as long as Piper isn't being a resurrection man, and isn't starting the World of the White Rat version of the 1788 Doctor's Riot, then I'd say he still comes out on top, ethically speaking. It's not good, and Piper himself will tell you that. But I think he's still a net good in the world, and he's concretely helping people, even if it is on a small scale.
The thing that Piper is SUPER aware of and what I think the reason is that he's willing to take ethical liberties with dead bodies is that if he does, people will live. There will be a concrete reduction in suffering and a concrete increase in people's quality of life.
He is also not violating the bodily autonomy of anyone who is still alive. We see him advising a woman where to go for help. He's making sure it won't cost her anything if she does go. There is no financial coercion there, there is no force or pressure on the woman to go to this cunning woman. It's her choice if she goes, she can give or withdraw consent at any time. I don't always feel like I have that choice or the financial freedom to make it in MODERN medicine. Piper is doing his level goddamn best in a nightmare scenario, and I respect the hell out of him for that. I love that this is messy, and I love that it has real consequences in the world.
Literally ONLY T. Kingfisher could orchestrate an elongated meet cute for two characters that involves two different dead bodies, a corruption scandal with the police, and a bloody bone saw.
So yeah, my reading buddy and I have started Paladin's Hope. Bring on Piper and Galen!
i can't believe we got canonical "who's burning down my kitchen?" piper and "making breakfast for my beautiful husband" galen

Chapter 21 of Paladin's Hope, and Piper is just quietly over here calling out why I left academia. Like, sir...how dare you be this on the nose:
Piper and Galen both make valid points here. Institutions and change are messy things.
I’m currently reading Paladin’s Hope and gaaaah I love Earstripe the gnole 😭
I desperately need more gnole lore. They’re adorable and fascinating and I need mooooore!
T. Kingfisher… the author that you are.

The thing that no one warned you about insanity was how incredibly tedious it was. You were always having to explain yourself and apologize, over and over, and you got so tired of being crazy.

Piper had been stunned when Galen went to one knee, in the finest romantic tradition, and begged for his hand in marriage. Moreso because he's been holding a bonesaw at the time and there was a body open on the slab in front of him. "I... I... Galen, really? Are you sure?"
"It's been five months," Galen had said, looking up at him. "And I have come close to ruining it at least three times because I'm an absolute idiot. I expect I'll probably come close again. If we're married, at least I'll have a chance to throw myself at your feet and apologize before you tell me to die in a fire."
"That's a horrible reason to get married," Piper had said.
"How about that I don't deserve you and I don't deserve to be as happy as you make me, but I'm just enough of a bastard to try to grab on to something I don't deserve?"

Mr Darcy walking into the room, seeing the entire Bennet family in there, and promptly walking back out is so fucking funny
The Other Bennet Sister (2026)
One would assume that Mary seeing the man she has a crush on but can’t pursue because he’s already engaged at social events would be extremely distressing, so I love that instead we’re seeing it be a mixed but net positive experience of coming into herself while every cut to Mr. Hayward makes it obvious that he’s the one having an absolutely miserable time
the other Bennet sister fills me with so much hope. for the girls who were never chosen. for the girls who have never fit in. for the girls who’s sisters naturally seem to flourish socially but couldn’t understand why it wasn’t the same for them. for the girls who are overlooked. for the girls who dream of a gentle and stable love. for the girls who tell everyone they’re okay with being alone. this one was for us, love is possible.
Happy pride month specifically to folks on the asexual and aromantic spectrum who oftentimes feel isolated and left out of the conversation. You belong here as much as the rest of us and I hope that you are all loved in a way that is comforting to you.
