what i personally love seeing in clace fanart:

jace having messy curly golden hair. i am a jace curly hair truther and i’m spreading the agenda

jace not being the tannest person in the world (i personally really dislike tans i’m sorry 😭)

clary having her gorgeous red curls!! straight-haired clary scares me (bonus points for cute curly bangs)

clary being extremely freckled. i love when people draw clary having freckles EVERYWHERE, not just her face (she’s described as having a face full of freckles, her knuckles having a light dusting of freckles, having freckled legs, ect)

this is one is so important to me: clary having a small chest!! she canonically has smaller boobs and i wish there was more fanart of her drawn that way. all boobs are beautiful and small chested women deserve to see themselves just as much as women with medium/big boobs!!

biblically accurate height difference (aka clary barely reaching jace’s shoulder or somewhere around there)

their runes being drawn at least somewhat correctly (hate when jace and/or clary are missing their voyance runes or if they’re in the wrong place/hand, it just bugs me)

you’re like one of the three people talking about this but oh my god i reread the tlkof chapter sampler and noticed that not only does clary have bloody hands from getting sedated and dragged SHE ALSO LEAVES HER SHOE BEHIND. i’m begging for a scene where the tmi gang finds blood stains and a shoe and freaks out cause they can’t find her

I’m so excited for the clary plotline in tlkof, too. I think It’ll be very interesting in terms of characterisation and going deeper into not just Clary but Janus (and of course, how Janus plays into Jace’s character).

I feel like CC makes a few different nods to classic gothic books throughout like Arthur being the mad uncle in the attic has to be a reference to Jane Eyre

another reference is the mortal instruments are notable Arthurian legend motifs, with the cup being the holy grail, the sword being Excalibur & the mirror being (the lady in) the lake

Additionally, Lake Lyn is in Brocelind Forest, which is from Arthurian legend (the Brocéliande) and is known as an enchanted forest & often the location of Merlin’s tomb. The name Lake Lyn is also derived from the Welsh word for lake (llyn).

To add onto the Frankenstein one. Victor(Valentine) creating a monster (Sebastian) for his own ambition + his idea of making the world better + the creature coming out ‘wrong’ (Valentine saying that Sebastian had too much demon blood in him) + leading the creature to a world of loneliness (Sebastian being shunned by shadowhunter society) + The monster asking for a companion but being denied (Clary) + leading the monster to commit mass destruction (Sebastian starting the dark war)

I’ll also add onto this by Malcolm and Annabel being inspired by Catherine and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights and Valentine being a modern Prometheus-like figure (a term originating from Frankenstein, which was subtitled The Modern Prometheus). A visionary whose ambition is constantly overreaching ‘natural’ boundaries, bringing about devastating consequences (a tragic, self-inflicted downfall) because humans cannot play god!! The Morgensterns representing divine arrogance is such a powerful topic I feel nobody ever talks about, even tho it’s such a basic foundation of their existence as characters.

I love how this circles back to one of Cassie’s favourite counter-assertions she uses throughout tsc which is ‘Quis ut Deus?’ meaning ‘Who is like god?’
