I’m Ballet/Casey, I’m watching the whole Pokémon series (in Japanese) through and figured I’d make a side blog to put all my thoughts as I watch it. Main blog is balletcoppelia.

Life has been super busy so I haven't had the time to watch an episode in a while, I'm hoping to get one done in the coming week, but for now here's some goofy Pikachu's from various Indigo League episodes. (I love him so much.)

Indigo League Episode 31

Today the gang is back in their comfort zone; being lost in the wilderness and encountering random people. Nothing super significant happens to the good guys (though Gary does show up), but Jesse and James's pokemon both evolve this episode.

I don't know why they're even surprised to be lost at this point, it happens so often.

You gotta be a real hater to tear your own helmet apart.

Oh thank goodness he doesn't have an ego. (Lying.)

Brutal that Misty and Brock just agree with Gary here. I know it's fun to bully your friends but maybe not at the same time as his actual bully/rival is putting him down.

Call me an amateur then Gary, I'd be like Ash, wanting to show off my pokemon any chance I get.

Gary's cheerleaders just called Brock old, I love it.

Love it when Meowth makes faces because of Jesse and James being silly.

I always love when Pikachu hangs out on Ash's hat, and he's even being concerned about Ash being sad, how cute.

James is just a sad little guy.

Gary is so cheesy, this is literally magical girl anime behavior.

Ah, so he can be polite.

Pikachu you could have told him "don't" before he threw the pokeball.

Hot spring time! Looks nice.

Jesse and James wanted to evolve ekans and koffing, and they just happened to evolve right when J&J's tears landed on them.

So pretty! Love it when we get a really pretty shot like this.

So does the pokemon world not have any sort of before construction work that has to be done in the planning stage of development? Like doing a survey of the land or something that would have found this out before they started work on the dam?

This is at least the second time that Meowth interrupted the motto to skip to the end, impatient king.

Misty: Maybe being stupid is pleasant actually.

New week we encounter our sixth gym!

Indigo League Episode 30

This episode is actually fairly cute despite being in smog and ooze city; Pikachu has a cold so we get some cute moments with him and Ash, the gang make a lot of funny faces, and Ash gets a new Pokemon!

Ah, what a lovely city.

Pikachu looks so goofy here.

Ash got electrocuted so he broke out the rubber gloves again, but he's clearly touching Pikachu in places without the gloves. Ah well.

Wow, this is quite the pokemon center! What a weird design.

I love the cat ears on the binoculars here.

Team Rocket is hanging out in the sewer today, and using a space aesthetic to do so.

Love it when Meowth is rude for no reason, it's so fun.

Brutal, Ash.

No, Ash, Pikachu wants to come with you!

Ah, reunited, time for Ash's second electrocution of the episode.

Meowth feels no shame in almost getting Jesse and James getting killed.

Ash's pupils slid sideways here to look at the scary thing, it was an unusual animation shot so it was really funny to me.

This is the shot I was actually going for, I love how Ash and Misty are clinging to Brock.

Love that Ash protects Pikachu here.

Grimer and Muk! I know they're just piles of goop, but I think they're kinda cute.

Ash is so scared his mouth is partially off his face.

Just a pile of goop flinging itself at the door.

The gang trying to keep the door closed really reminded me of a similar scene in Jurassic Park.

So many silly babies.

Ash caught Muk! He was excited at first, but seems to have encountered a problem with catching him.

Jesse and James were talking about their plan to nobody (aka the audience), and Meowth is calling them out on it.

Ash can have a bit of an ego sometimes but he is also surprisingly modest.

Ash solved his stink problem, just send Muk to Professor Oak! Rip Oak though.

Next episode we'll see a lot of Diglett, and also Gary!

Indigo League Episode 29

I hope you're ready for Pokemon MMA, because that's what we're doing today. Primeape gets his time to shine, Geodude technically participates, and Misty has no Pokemon that we can even pretend are fighting type so she gets to watch enthusiastically.

Pikachu is none too sure about battling a fighting pokemon.

I love Ash just teaching Pikachu how to punch

Pikachu in little boxing gloves is very cute.

Everyone's getting in on the goofiness today.

Pikachu is not very effective here.

Everyone's face is great here.

He actually managed to land a punch!

Unfortunately there were consequences.

Ash cradling Pikachu here is cute.

These are some amazing background characters here.

Ash is almost connecting the dots here, but doesn't quite manage it.

Ash is in your corner Primeape!

This part is so sweet, Primeape gets thrown out of the ring and Ash flings himself under him to catch him, and Primeape is so touched by it.

Look at these two having a great time together!

Pikachu and the CotW are being a bit judgy here, let Misty cheer them on in peace.

Team Rocket has been dressed up in a big trench coat this episode, and right when they revealed themselves is when James succumbed to the effort of it.

Pikachu looks so little tugging on Ash's pant leg here.

This not the frame I was aiming for but sometimes you end up with an even better one.

Ash leaves Primeape with the CotW to continue in the MMA scene, I wonder if he's ever heard from again. They don't say he's not Ash's pokemon anymore, so maybe.

Goodbye Primeape, next episode we encounter some electric pokemon and Ash gets a new pokemon!

Indigo League Episode 28

This episode we're stopping by a place called Scissor Street that is known for having lots of Breeders and make up artists, Brock has a particular shop that he wants to visit there. We're not told what town we're in, so I think it makes sense that this is a particular section of the city we were in last episode. In fact that last episode location, Yoyoyo Town, might be a subsection of Tamamushi City from two episodes ago. Not an official fact mind you, just a guess I have.

Coming up we learn that 'natural beauty' is great, Misty has a weird fashion day, and Brock gets a rival that we'll probably never see again and also his Vulpix!

I love this Bulbasaur with a cute blue mohawk!

Pikachu hanging out on Ash's head is always darling.

Love a good visual gag like Jesse and James turning around to show that the roses are taped to their backs.

These two are so shook to see what's been done to them, poor things.

I love Ash being just totally disbelieving of Brock here. Idk something about his pose is great to me.

Brock is getting creative with proportions today.

Hah, Ash is short.

Pikachu apparently has glossy fur, good for him.

Poor Ash is really getting yelled at by giant versions of his friends a lot today.

Wow, Misty smiling at Psyduck as she's releasing him from his pokeball, rare to see.

Pikachu is so excited to get some good pampering from Ash, how cute.

Idk if this is a hot take but I think that this look is cute before the make up. A bit busy, sure, but cute. Though the necklace and goggles at the same time is a bit much, pick one or the other.

Great faces from Jesse and James in the first pic, and Meowth in the second. J&J just want to do fashion stuff Meowth, stop ruining the vibe!

Pikachu is once again stopped from battling by getting stuff in his eyes, give it another twenty years and you'll be able to handle that no problem buddy.

I love the goofy Squirtle in this picture and the guy in the white shirt with little antennas. High fashion.

Poor Psyduck gets no love! He runs off to get help for Misty and after everything is done and she's been saved she yells at him for not doing a thing to help her, poor guy.

Sure, you two are rivals, totally. The real question is if you will exist ever again.

Indigo League Episode 27

I went on an unexpected hiatus, but I'm back now! I'm gonna aim for a more manageable schedule of posting every Sunday, instead of multiple days a week.

This episode we're meeting my second favorite pokemon, Psyduck! Bulbasaur was my clear and only favorite for a long time until I watched the Japanese version of Indigo League all the way through for the first time. Psyduck is somehow much cuter in Japanese, I think it's the voice. His Japanese name is Koduck so he's completely redubbed for the English version of the show and his English voice is much more grating, not that I hate English Psyduck but I think his Japanese voice is just cuter.

The episode itself is about missing children and pokemon being weirdly sleepy. Ash gets to play detective to figure out why, which he enjoys but isn't particularly good at.

Ash is clearly not a city boy, unfortunately for him this is the second huge city with tons of skyscrapers that we've been in in two episodes. The group presumably had some travel time but we didn't see it.

Aww, he meets a worried mom and she makes him think of his own mom which is what motivates him to investigate the missing kids, how sweet.

I think I've seen it on another post somewhere else but this shot sums them up so well.

A Pokemon Center! It's been a bit since we've seen one. The theme for this one seem to be aliens for some reason, and it has a very big lobby, which is fairly common of the big city Pokemon Centers.

The first sighting of my boy!!!!

Nurse Joy is brutal to this Magikarp, he's allowed to be too tired for his signature flailing without being insulted too.

And a close up on my boy! I wish I were her so bad, holding a Psyduck like that would fix me.

It's time for Ash to play detective, and I can't help but think of Detective Conan.

Pikachu starts getting sleepy too and makes an adorable sleepy noise while he's face down like this.

As a kid I thought this was so cool, a mansion and big garden on top of a skyscraper? Extremely cool! Now I'm more likely to think about how windy it would be when outside up there and that skyscrapers move in the wind, which I would hate.

Some Japanese names for the pokemon are just normal English words, which never fails to amuse me.

Boy, Pikachu's hardly ever in Ash's backpack. I didn't even know he was in there until Misty took him out, we don't see him get put in there.

The missing kids are hypnotized to act like pokemon as a side effect of the rich people in the mansion using a Hypno as a substitute for sleep pills, and this one is my favorite of the children. She's just so happy to splash in her puddle there like a Magikarp.

Ash displaying his strength, I don't know for sure how heavy a Drowzee is but they're at the very least decent sized.

I really like these wingsuits, they look like bat wings.

Ash solving his problems the way he always likes to solve them, violence.

These kids are about to start their Pokemon journeys? But they're definitely younger than Ash considering how much shorter than Ash they all are.

Pikachu's half awake face is totally cute.

This has got to be a reference to Detective Conan, right? It's first episode came out over a year before the first Pokemon episode.

Misty! Stop being mean to him!

I love that Psyduck caught himself.

Yeah Ash, she looks thrilled.

Misty breaking the fourth wall to disagree with the narrator. Appreciate your darling Psyduck girlie!

Look at his little face, how could she hate this.

Next episode, we meet Vulpix and see some very interesting fashion.

Indigo League Episode 26

(Comes back after a week of unscheduled not posting.) Oops? I was still sick for most of last week unfortunately but I’m finally better so I should be back on track now.

Ash challenges his next gym in this episode, and the policy of this stupid gym is legit so annoying. You can’t challenge it if you don’t like perfume? He’s a ten year old boy, most of them do not care about perfume. I get that he was rude about it, but I’m fully on Ash’s side here.

Tfw you’re used to the wilderness instead of the city.

Ash is the odd man out now, the new trio is Pikachu Misty and Brock.

Another cool looking gym, and another one that doesn’t seem to have any signage that it’s a gym.

So, most boys aren't allowed in the gym then?

Wow, very mature. You, a full grown woman, are sticking your tongue out at a ten year old boy. You sure showed him.

Ah Meowth, I love you.

Jesse and Meowth kicking at each other is fun, I love it when they’re petty and fight.

And so begins a tradition of Ash dressing as a girl, which they stick with for most of the series. Though he doesn’t in X and Y, and I don’t know if he did in Journeys or not,

What a beautiful family.

They either dyed Ash's eyebrows or have a really good eyebrow pencil, Team Rocket knows their little details.

The noise this Grimer made as he was running away from Gloom's stench was very funny/cute.

Ah, Pikachu. helpful as always.

Ash and Pikachu have a really cute moment in this episode!

I love how Meowth gets bored during the moto and just blows everything up.

That stream of water in the top right is NOT hitting the fire.

Another gym bites the dust in the wake of Ash and co, so far Sabrina’s gym is the only gym to escape unscathed from Ash’s presence.

My heroic boy! This is Ash at his best, doing something kinda stupid but very brave.

And that’s the episode! Ash got his fifth badge by showing off his good character in saving Gloom, and in our next episode my other favorite Pokémon joins the group!!! See you Wednesday. ❤️

Indigo League Episode 25

It’s time for Ash to get another Pokémon! I think this episode is so fun. Pokeani violence just hits different, and the gang runs a distance that would normally have taken them a full day in only half a day. They must have been so tired after this episode.

Jelly donuts! I love to rag on the dub for unnecessary censorship but this one was kinda funny ngl.

I’m not usually one for monkeys but Mankey is very cute! He’s the best of both worlds of pigs and monkeys.

You can capture non Pokemon things?? How have we not done more with this information??

I love Misty’s face here, it’s so deadpan.

Ash’s cringing face is great here! And Pikachu hiding behind Ash is just darling.

Not Brock thinking he’s catching a Pokémon and then remembering what he’s actually doing.

They love to use the "getting 'chu" joke, they've used it multiple times now.

Normally I would say biting the gloves is useless but those are literally his hands.

I love how Pikachu notices that Ash's hat is in danger of getting burned and he runs in to rescue it!

And ain't he super cute while doing it!

Ash's face is great here, he looks like a goomba.

James and Meowth's faces are pretty great too.

Oh that’s interesting! I love to see explanations for the Japanese names.

And so begins a running trend of Ash’s Pokémon showing affection through violence.

Indigo League Episode 24

And we’re back to episodes! We finally get back to the last episode of the Sabrina arc, with Ash kind of beating another gym, yay! I like this episode well enough, it didn’t do anything super special for me but it has a great example of Ash’s strength of character by not leaving his friends behind no matter what.

I like this shot a lot, but I can't help to notice that it's the same exact shot they used as an establishing shot for this city two episodes ago.

I LOVE this shot, can't get enough of my haunted boy.

This effect used when Misty is paralyzed is a little bit creepy.

Pikachu is just off screen but I can't help but notice that Ash is completely ignoring Pidgeotto here.

I love all of the Pokemon here but of course Bulbasaur is my favorite. He doesn't even look scared, just kinda sheepish and bored.

Once again Ash and co are way too high when they're teleported and the guy teleporting them finally gets some consequences for that by having them all fall on him.

Gotta love a creepy glowy eyes kid.

You know, I don’t remember seeing traffic lights on this show very often. Cars aren’t very important to the show typically.

I love Meowth getting agitated here over his idiot teammates being excited about using a net. He really is the brains of the outfit.

Misty and Brock are dolls now btw, which is a little horrifying to realize that psychics in this universe can just do apparently.

I think it’s so funny how anytime Sabrina has to interact with anything inside the house there’s just an inexplicably giant house among all the other houses, whereas in other shots it seems like they’re all about the same size.

This moment of Pikachu choosing to fight a fight he’s doomed to lose just to protect Ash is so sweet!

I love how comedy to this Haunter is apparently bombs.

She’s just like me fr, I too was laughing over this silly face.

I love how they’re acknowledging that you don’t always get your badge from just straight up winning a battle, I love to tease Ash for not winning most of his Indigo League badges in battle as much as the next person, but he did still get them legitimately from the gym leaders.

That’s our fourth gym done, we’re halfway through the gyms! (But still a long way from being halfway through the season.) On Friday we’re meeting a new Ash Pokémon!

Happy New Year! To start the year off I’m going make a non episode post because I got sick during Christmas week so I didn’t get any episode posts done, Wednesday we should be back to episodes though.

As I've been watching through Pokemon I've noticed that fairly often they pan over a mostly still image and it got me thinking about how I could totally stitch them together! Some of these are really nice and could make some great bookmarks I think.

Indigo League Episode 23

This is a fun haunted house episode, and Ash dies for the first time! I had a blast watching this one, The humor is on point, and Ash is my favorite of the three main characters so naturally I like the focus on him.

What a brat, scaring his friends just for fun.

This shot of Ash falling over after being shocked by Pikachu as revenge for scaring him was surprisingly smoothly animated.

I love it when Pikachu doesn't want to do stuff, he’s so opinionated.

And this time Ash joins! Very cute.

The mental image of them frantically trying to get ahead of the gang is hilarious to me.

James is almost graceful as he's falling here.

These are some great faces on James and Meowth.

And another great face on Ash! Lots of funny faces this episode.

Pikachu’s voice actor says Ash's name (Pikapi) in a very scared manner here.

They're all in the same pose! How cute! <3

Ash’s voice actor makes a great confused noise here, the voice actors are doing some fun stuff in this episode.

The pokedex is useless throughout the whole episode, giving entries similar to this one every time Ash tries it. I’ll bet it knows more about ghost Pokémon nowadays.

Ash be like “your bits aren’t funny.” Absolutely brutal.

Rip Pikachu and Ash.

Haunter can apparently remove ghosts from dead bodies, yet another cursed pokemon fact.

They are very shocked to look down and see their dead bodies. Pikachu's face in particular is very funny to me for some reason.

That's not how it works Ash. (Except for you it kinda is.)

The first thing he does after dying is to go bother Misty. He's so rude.

Who knew being dead was so much fun!

Aww, they're just sensitive little guys.

Poor Brock and Misty don't have a good time this episode.

And that's the episode! Ash just decides not to die and that works, Haunter has decided to travel with them for a bit but isn't actually caught by Ash, and we wait in suspense to see if Haunter will be enough to beat the gym leader. (Also I have the same sense of humor as Ash apparently because I found the face Haunter is making in the second photo really funny.)

We have one more episode left in this little arc, but we won't be finishing it until the new year because I'm taking a week break for Christmas.

Indigo League Episode 22

This episode is delightfully spooky, with our main characters being in some real danger! Ash challenges his fourth gym in this one, and the next couple of episodes will be about his journey to actually beat it.

The gang are lost yet again, though lucky for them they don’t spend multiple episodes being lost this time.

Ah yes, a random little girl playing in the woods. Very normal and not creepy.

Ash falls off a cliff and I was impressed by his quick thinking to pull out Bulbasaur to save him. He goes to pull out the pokeball pretty much as soon as he starts falling.

I really like the composition of this shot, it’s very striking.

This shot is fun too, though not quite as much as the previous one.

Hmm, is Ash an adrenaline junkie? 🤔

But hey, at least Ash almost dying led them to the city they were looking for!

Yeah Ash! Stand up for yourself! (I love a good Pokémon joke that makes me laugh out loud for real.)

They’re bored of the theme song already. It’s only episode 22 guys, you’re gonna hear it a whole lot more!

Mystery girl: “Get teleported idiots!” (The gang get teleported three different times this episode and every time they end up about a foot or two too high at their destination so they fall down a bit. Just a random thing to notice.)

This is a weird looking gym, it doesn't even say gym anywhere on the outside. Though I guess it’s a little harder to depict psychic powers as architecture, as compared to elements like water or electricity.

Pikachu hanging off the door here is so cute.

The noises the Japanese voice actor makes here as he’s trying to bend the spoon with his mind are hilarious!

Classic strong Ash, I’m not sure I could just bend a spoon like that. (Though I guess it depends on how thick the metal is.)

Pikach being cute again, this time surprised at the Abra teleporting behind him.

In fact Ash will end having that happen to his Pokémon multiple times thoughout the series, so it’s a good thing it’s not illegal in a match.

Why is their first response to ending up some where that they can’t find anybody to wander into someone’s house and start eating their food? And Brock, how could you not tell that was plastic when you picked it up?? And whyyyyyy are you picking up a piece of cake with your bare hands???

Another fine Pikachu face, this one’s kinda scary in its deformity.

This is a great summery of Ash as a person.

Poor Meowth, he’s the hardest worker of the team. (Jesse and James got paralyzed earlier which is why he’s dragging them now.)

Next episode, Ash dies! (For real.)

Indigo League Episode 21

Ah, Bye Bye Butterfree, lots of kids first heartbreak. I never cried over it but I know a lot of people have. Interestingly enough excluding Meowth all the Pokemon seen in this episode have the same name between Japanese and English.

The amount of curve on the ground where they’re walking is amusing to me for some reason.

They’re so silly. Their reaction to seeing a high cliff is to look straight down and comment that they'd die if they fell off it.

Look at them copying Team Rocket, using a hot air balloon and all.

I like Brock showing his age and experience here, he’s usually just being the comedic relief.

And then he goes right back to his annoying romantic bit after seeing a girl in another balloon who is also releasing a Butterfree for mating season. And I’m pretty sure there’s an animation error on Brock’s face, that red glow seems like it was supposed to stay on his face but it’s spilling out on the right there.

Misty teasing Brock is everything to me. And she said exactly that I was thinking too.

What a stylish little man!

Aww, Ash wants the other Butterfree to like his darling boy. <3

Of course Team Rocket has a helicopter the one time the gang is in a balloon. And poor Butterfree, his little bug body slamming into the metal must hurt a lot. He does later switch to the window but that doesn't work either.

Hello Jigglypuff balloon. That's an omen of the future.

Look they're stealing Team Rocket's theme song! This is the first time they've done it. (I think.)

Jesse is cutting out the pokemon middle man and fighting the pokemon herself, she's such a girlboss.

Girl where did you get that? XD

Everyone gets to do something for this rescue!

It's fairly normal but for some reason the way Ash ran up and checked on butterfree was really sweet to me.

Butterfree's fighting ability won over the pretty girl he liked! So in a way, Team Rocket was really helpful today.

I love his little smirk. He's going to destroy them and they know it.

This was so cute! Ash loves his little explosion machine. <3

Ash too! (Random fact, this is the third time he's cried in the show so far and the first time it wasn't over Pikachu.)

........Not even gonna touch that. (I died laughing over this)

Pokeani never disappoints for pretty sunsets.

And that's the episode! It's cute, kinda sad, but has a great vibe overall. One final thing to point out is that they have a memory flashback compilation for Butterfree, which I was amused to see considering they only use clips from like five episodes, but I guess that is about 25% of the number of episodes we've watched so far.

On Wednesday we start another multi episode arc!

where are you watching these from?! The japanese is so hard to find

I have a few different free anime websites I use, I was screen recording them to be able to watch without buffering and to easily take screenshots, but at one point I discovered that I can just download from some of the players directly so I do that now.

If you'd like the link to the specific sites feel free to send me a dm, I'm totally happy to share them but a few posts I've seen about how pirating sites being publicly shared drew attention to them and got them taken down has me a little nervous of just posting a link here.

Or if you don't want to send a dm I've had pretty good luck with just searching with the format "watch [show name and season] japanese subbed online free", early Pokeani used to be basically impossible to find that way subbed but nowadays it's a bit easier to find.

Indigo League and Orange Islands have been fan subbed , which is why they're able to be found online now, but so far as I can find Johto/Master Quest and all of Pokemon Advanced aren't yet. There's one in the works apparently but no date on when it might be done. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that it'll be sometime next year so I'll have them available when I get there in my watch.

Indigo League Episode 20

It's ghost time! This is another episode not focused on Ash, with Brock being the central character of this episode (with a side of James). Ghosts are fun in pokemon because usually they're pokemon, sometimes they're humans, and sometimes they're pokemon who are dead humans. This episode we get the first two examples, and it's a fun episode! Not my favorite, but not bad at all.

Poor Brock is despairing over his total lack of rizz, having made no romantic connection over the summer at all. I love it when the show talks about the passage of time considering Ash's total lack of aging in the next twenty plus years.

Misty is impressively strong to be pulling both of the boys no problem.

I love this bit where James is half hanging over this fence and then Jesse drops him when she gets distracted by planning some crime. James's scream from his Japanese voice actor is great.

The pokemon center here has an eleven o'clock curfew at which point these metal gates come down over the doors. Seems mildly alarming and something we have never seen at any other pokemon centers. Very strange.

Misty is so cute here! I love her little ponytail she normally has but it's nice to switch things up every now and then.

I didn't notice this the first time (I usually watch these two times for my inital thoughts and then anything I missed the second time) but the pink spots on Misty's kimono are Goldeen outlines!

Like I said I like this episode, but I think the end is my favorite part of it , look how cute they are dancing together in their kimonos! Brock is too busy being emo to go dancing right now though.

Next episode on Monday, get ready to cry over Butterfree! (Though we've really not seen a whole lot of him.)

Indigo League Episode 19

Today we have what I think is our first city wrecking disaster episode, it's focused on Tentacool and Tentacruel, and Misty catches a pokemon! I really like this episode! I seem to enjoy the disaster episodes pretty well usually, and this one's great.

Hah, theses idiots missed the ferry. Relatable though, I’ve missed a ferry before and it’s always pretty annoying.

Poor Horsea! He got a boo boo. (His Japanese name is Tattu which is super cute.) I appreciate that he's trying to warn everyone about the danger, but I'm more impressed by his ability to draw anything that's at all recognizable in water.

Wow, an explosion that has nothing to do with Ash! Such a rarity.

The bad guy of this episode has an entourage of guys who are just there to be pretty. Very girlboss of her even if I don’t really like her.

Misty is waxing poetic about how cute Tentacool are and Ash is NOT having it.

Meowth being able to speak human is so convenient for when they need the humans to be able to understand the pokemon.

Poor Butterfree, no way is it comfortable for his little bug wings to be carrying a Pokemon larger than him. And how is Zubat even carrying Squirtle? He looks glued on.

I love Misty in this episode, she's very passionate about her love for water pokemon, she was great as the focus of the episode.
