“I think I’m in love with you.” (thank you 🥺💜)
It’s bonfire night. Turns out it’s one of Ben’s favourite times of the year.
It’s freezing, and Ben takes no shame in wrapping his arms under Callum’s jacket, hands locking at his side. Callum smiles sweetly down at him, knows Ben will claim he isn’t cold and that he just can’t keep his hands off his boyfriend, but Callum knows him better than that.
He kisses the top of Ben’s head when he shivers slightly, before taking off his beanie and putting it on Ben, making sure to cover his ears.
“Can’t have ya getting flu can we? Won’t hear the end of it,” Callum says with a laugh.
“Not even cold,” Ben lies. “If anything, I’m trying to keep you warm.”
Callum shakes his head, licking at his lips to disguise his growing smile. “Funny. I knew you were going to say that.”
“Alright mate,” Ben huffs moving his arms from around Callum’s waist. “Go and get us a hot chocolate,” Ben slaps his arse to hurry him up.
“Do ya even really have to ask?”
When Callum returns, the firework display has begun. Sparkling lights fill the night sky, and Callum can see why Ben enjoys it so much.
“Daddy!” Lexi comes running towards them, jumping up into Ben’s arms. She waves excitedly at Callum and he blows her a kiss.
They watch the fireworks, some of them making them go ‘wow.’ All three of them find themselves huddled up together, Callum’s arm over Ben’s shoulder, Ben’s free arm around his waist.
“Let me get a photo!” Kathy grins at them all, her phone already out. “Ya look like a right little family!”
It’s only a light comment, but Ben and Callum look at each other for a second, Ben almost refuses, tells his mum to leave off.
But Callum just smiles, “what’s the harm in a photo?”
“You’re always taking selfies in the mirror, daddy.” Lexi pipes up, a slight giggle falling from her lips when Ben tickles her.
“I do not!” Ben laughs along, before turning to look up at Callum. “You can shut up, too.”
Callum smirks, “I ain’t saying anything!”
“Come on, give us a smile,” Kathy drags their attention back to her and they all smile at the camera.
Kathy coos over the photo before kissing them all on the cheek. “Ya both look so in love,” she cups Ben’s face. “I’m so happy for you son.”
Nothing gets said again until Callum comes back down from reading Lexi a good nights story. Ben looks agitated on the sofa, scratching at his chin awkwardly, his neck twitching.
“What’s wrong?” Callum asks instantly, because it’s obvious something is.
Ben takes a breath. “Been thinking about what mum said-“
Callum laughs it off, “ya know what she’s like-“
“I think I’m in love with ya,” Ben gets to his feet, stands in front of Callum with his heart on his sleeve, open for Callum to break everything, to break him. “Actually, I’d say I was pretty sure that I am.”
Callum looks down at him speechless, his mouth opening and closing. Words fail him, but he’s sure he’s close to crying. “Ben, don’t say it if ya don’t mean it.”
Ben pulls Callum’s T-shirt into his fist, makes him look down at him properly. “I mean it ya idiot. How could I not?”
Callum just swallows, still in shock. “I don’t-“
“I’m not expecting ya to say it back,” Ben says quietly. “That’s not what this is. Mum just gave me that push I needed.”
Callum finally manages to do something other than just gaping down at Ben, he smiles shyly before leaning down to kiss Ben gently.
Ben moans, eyes still closed. “Also, I’m keeping the beanie.”
Callum just kisses him again, picks Ben up until he’s on his toes and keeps kisses him in hope this conveys what’s words fail him.
