“intellectual property laws protect artists” I mean maybe rich artists but lawsuits are expensive and the people who really benefit from those laws are the giant stock image banks that buy the rights to art and photography from starving artists for absolutely nothing and sell access rights to businesses and advertisers/marketers. some shadier websites might even use work without permission knowing the artists will either never know (since a lot of content is behind a paywall) or will never be able to contest it. intellectual property laws rarely protect the people who need the most protection.

it’s called a sutrah, and it’s meant to act as a physical barrier between the person praying and someone who might happen to pass in front.
