You gently fiddled with the sleeves of Dennis’s hoodie after he’d personally forced you to take it when you’d arrived. ‘You are freezing; this ED is literally Antarctica, and I know that dress isn't keeping you warm. Please just take the sweater.’

“It's no problem, sunshine. You don't owe me anything; I'm just glad you're alright.” His words were smooth with a hint of gruffness, making them feel like a warm bonfire and calming your nerves. “Oh, and call me Jack. It's the least I can offer after that beautiful bouquet you made.” You nod with a smile as Dennis makes his way over to you from the bathrooms.

“We all set?” The younger man asked hopefully, his arm instinctively going around your shoulders. You felt your face heat at the simple touch, and you realized that the smell of his vanilla cologne surrounding you made you relax instantaneously.

“Yes, you are; discharge papers have been signed. You're good to go.” Jack smiled warmly as you and Dennis both nodded and waved before walking out into the chilly, early-morning air. Finally feeling free of the stressful energy that came with the ED, you pulled your phone out of his your hoodie pocket to check your messages.

The strong smell of alcohol and cigarette smoke invaded your senses as you mustered up all your strength to pull your wrist away.

“Quit squirming, bitch, I don’t have time for your whining.” The man currently dragging you away from the hallway and toward the back exit spoke harshly and twisted the skin of your wrist in the same manner. Your futile attempts of stepping on his feet and elbowing his ribs only did you more harm and lost you more energy. After that his words became a blur and tears started to spring from your eyes, falling onto the calloused hand currently covering your mouth as you were dragged stepped out into the cold, dark night. Your tears blurred your vision and you felt your back hit the cold wall of the alley, your free hand pushing helplessly at the man’s chest. Suddenly he removed his hand from your mouth but before you could scream his fist met your nose with a crack. Blood poured down your face in an instant and the metallic taste filled your mouth. You faintly felt his hand fiddling with the hem of your dress and bile rose in your throat. You wished for a moment that you would just pass out and in that same second, the luminescence provided by the distant streetlights slowly faded out, but just before you could close your eyes, you heard a familiar voice.

“Get your goddamn hands off of her!”
