WE ARE NOT ENTITLED TO HAMILTON
I see a lot of posts about the Hamilton bootleg and people’s frustrations about not having access to seeing Hamilton. We live in a generation where information is accessible anywhere and we aren’t used to having to use our imagination to see a show that we have not seen in person. Left and right, Hollywood is making live action versions of our favorite shows and Broadway is working on a streaming service to watch shows online. But remember, this is a brand new territory Broadway is going in. Lin-Manuel spent the last 6 years of his life working on this, his baby. I don’t blame him for being protective of it and for the integrity of live theater. Lin has given every single chance for people to see the show, and he is aware that it is a hard ticket. He has started the cheapest lottery, allows a cancellation ticket line, started Ham4Ham, put the Ham4Ham show online so people not in NYC can enjoy the show, and is giving us a book about the making of the show. This has NEVER HAPPENED! Do we not see how lucky we are?! Lin is an angel sent from Broadway heaven because he knows how badly we want to know Hamilton since the tours won’t start until 2017. Most shows don’t start touring until YEARS after the show premieres. I didn’t see most Broadway shows until 5-6 years after they started on Broadway because I saw them on tour. They are hyper-driving these tours to get Hamilton out to everyone.
The beauty of live theater is that it is an experience. Sitting in the theater and the lights go down is the best feeling in the entire world, especially in the Richard Rogers. I was lucky enough to wait nine hours in the cold to get a cancellation ticket to Hamilton. It is worth the wait and to see it bootlegged is not only sad because it doesn’t do justice to the show, but it goes against everything Broadway stands for. Respect Lin and understand that we are NOT worthy of everything that he has done for us. STOP THINKING YOU ARE ENTITLED TO HAMILTON. YOU’RE NOT.
