Freelancing in technical theater means you’re on a lot of different email lists. People need a crew, they send out an email, you respond with your availability. Now, most people start these with things like “hey folks” or “hi everyone”. Neal is not most people.

His openers started off innocent enough.

Then, he started to push boundaries.

And as you can see, it has spiraled out of control since then.

How to be a good Audience member:

1. Show up ON TIME

2. Be seated at a maximum of 5 minutes before the show. (With your dang phones OFF)

3. Don’t play games on your phone during the show (I have actually seen this from the booth)

4. If the intermission is 15 minutes. Be back in your seat in 12

5. After the show LEAVE. Don’t stay seated in your seat talking for 15 minutes. Crew is waiting on you to clean up.

6. Thank your ushers and your crew.

7. Appreciate that for about every 1 person on stage there is about 3 or 4 back stage working on the production in one way or another. Even if they aren’t crew theres designers, production managers, Technical directors, Master electricians etc. To make the show you saw work beautifully and make it a positive experience

8. Be nice to the Theatre. Don’t leave trash behind (including your play bill) and don’t stick gum under the seats! 

9. Respect that other people are there to see the show too so don’t talk during the show!

10. Oh Yeah, you see that casual set of windows in the back of the theatre? That is the booth where the Stage Manager lives. We see everything. Every nose pick. Every time you start to fall asleep. We see you. We’re always watching.

I know of one LD in the DC area who drafts a fixture for a custom gobo he made that says “Waiting on Sound.”

I know another designer who has a “Waiting on Projections” macro for his movers

and a sound designer who has Muzak and the Jeopardy theme on hotkeys to fire back at them.

They’re actually lovely people to work with.
