Beware the Ides of March!
Freelancing in technical theater means you’re on a lot of different email lists. People need a crew, they send out an email, you respond with your availability. Now, most people start these with things like “hey folks” or “hi everyone”. Neal is not most people.
His openers started off innocent enough.
Then, he started to push boundaries.
And as you can see, it has spiraled out of control since then.
Tag yourselves. I’m the anteater in a suit who thinks he can pass.
THEY JUST KEEP COMING
He’s even witty in real time.
Neal is a hecking gift.
Neal needs to write white cards for cards against humanity
How to be a good Audience member:
1. Show up ON TIME
2. Be seated at a maximum of 5 minutes before the show. (With your dang phones OFF)
3. Don’t play games on your phone during the show (I have actually seen this from the booth)
4. If the intermission is 15 minutes. Be back in your seat in 12
5. After the show LEAVE. Don’t stay seated in your seat talking for 15 minutes. Crew is waiting on you to clean up.
6. Thank your ushers and your crew.
7. Appreciate that for about every 1 person on stage there is about 3 or 4 back stage working on the production in one way or another. Even if they aren’t crew theres designers, production managers, Technical directors, Master electricians etc. To make the show you saw work beautifully and make it a positive experience
8. Be nice to the Theatre. Don’t leave trash behind (including your play bill) and don’t stick gum under the seats!
9. Respect that other people are there to see the show too so don’t talk during the show!
10. Oh Yeah, you see that casual set of windows in the back of the theatre? That is the booth where the Stage Manager lives. We see everything. Every nose pick. Every time you start to fall asleep. We see you. We’re always watching.
If you haven’t seen Cunk on Shakespeare, with Philomena Cunk, you are missing OUT.

Q2Q Comics #476: Fight Nice
In Stories that are true:
I know of one LD in the DC area who drafts a fixture for a custom gobo he made that says “Waiting on Sound.”
I know another designer who has a “Waiting on Projections” macro for his movers
and a sound designer who has Muzak and the Jeopardy theme on hotkeys to fire back at them.
They’re actually lovely people to work with.
BRILLIANT. I want that gobo
SM: Going darker!
Dancer: In your spirit, or…?
SM: Yes, but the stage too.
I also started a couple pages on basic wood shop safety! More coming soon.
And thank you so much for being into this zine series! A lot of it is information that’s just sort of in my head now, and it’s been really valuable and useful to me to be able to write it out and be assured that it IS useful to do so, and not just incredibly redundant.
I took off my green tights. But before I went home, I stayed in the theater for a little while longer. Where you don’t have to grow up.

The Work for Fame agreement is for those times when someone promises to send you work in exchange for you working for free.
Anyone ever offer to pay you with “exposure”? My husband has….and now that he is a lawyer, here is contract to bind them to it.
I LOVE THIS
YO ART FRIENDS

the next time some company or client tries to pull this shit with you, see if they balk at actually getting a written agreement about it

“Next show I do, the playwright better already be dead.”
-SM after the fourth consecutive tech day of 30+ pages of rewrites
I FEEL THIS SO HARD. AHHH.
Story time: I once worked a comedy show that the playwright had to keep rewriting one specific joke because the famous Hollywood actors that the joke was about kept dying right after he wrote it.
