Here's why the TVD storylines make no sense most of the time now:
They move too damn fast. There's too many storylines in one season and to me it seems like they're running out of ideas because of that.
So let's see how the storylines have progressed throughout the series:
Season 1: I think season one was the best season because it didn't try to do too much at once.
We dig a bit into the history of Mystic Falls and the Salvatore brothers and that's the main storyline throughout season 1. And there were smaller storylines in between this like the Vicki thing and Bonnie discovering her witchcraft and so on, but all these separate storylines weren't all that separate and meshed together pretty well.
Then by the end of this season we meet Katherine and season 2 is supposed to be "The year of the Kat"
Season 2: But season 2 wasn't really the year of the Kat. It was the year of false curses and a bunch of other stuff.
So, season 2 was off to a great start. We had Katherine as the main antagonist. That was pretty clear. Then we have Caroline's becoming a vampire storyline with some werewolves sprinkled in. So that wasn't too bad, not too much going on all at once.
But then, the whole Katherine issue was basically over before half the season was over.
The introduce the 'Sun and the Moon Curse' only to put that mostly on the backburner for about nearly a third of the season to explore the werewolf storyline. Then they finally bring it back only to go "Psych!!!! It doesn't really exist, LOL!!!", meaning that a good chunk of the season was mostly useless then.
Then, they bring in Klaus for the last handful of episodes in the season and churn out the whole hybrid curse within those few episodes and break it and everything.
It was just way too much all at once.
I really believe it would have made more sense to keep Katherine as the main antagonist for most of the season (give us "The Year of the Kat" that they had advertised) while including the werewolves. They should have waited till the end of the season to start mentioning the curse and the sacrifice and things like that.
Season 3:
Holy hell, this season was one big hot ass mess. And that's putting it mildly.
