A Glance at the Globe: Painted Faces

the red eyeshine of the alligator occurs when light enters its eyes, passes through the rods (light receptors) and cones (color receptors) of the retina, strikes a membrane behind the retina called a tapeatum, and is then reflected back through the eye to the light source. most of the animals with eyeshine are, like alligators, night hunters who must make use of limited light. photos by larry lynch and david moynahan

Week 001 - Impressionism
Artist: Frederick Carl Frieseke (1874-1939)
Frederick Carl Frieseke is a second-generation American Impressionist who spent much of his productive time as an expatriate in France.
By 1900 Frieseke was spending summers in the town of Giverny, made famous by the residence of Monet (although the property was adjacent to Monet’s, Frieseke had only limited contact with the French master) and other artists, among them many Americans.
Evidenced in his own painting style characterized by a consideration of color and pattern, broken brushwork, and decorative elements.
At the height of his career, in the 1910s and early 1920s, Frieseke was perhaps the most popular of all living American artists.
A quote from Frederick C. Frieseke:
It is sunshine, flowers in sunshine; girls in sunshine; the nude in sunshine, which I have been principally interested in. If I could only reproduce it exactly as I see it I would be satisfied.

Week 001 - Impressionism
Artist: Joaquin Mir Trinxet (1873-1940)
Joaquin Mir is a Spanish painter. He is more close to the post-impressionist movement but I wanted to share his work with you because in a way he took what he needed from the impressionists and improved it to achieve his personal goals.
In his paintings he used to merge colors and shapes so during his first exhibition in Barcelona in 1901 the reviews were very positive but the public found his paintings difficult to comprehend.
His palette coincided with the one the Impressionists used and he also coincided with them in excluding the colour black, using a host of combinations to paint shadow. But he used these technical resources to create a world of his own, a new landscape.
A quote from Joaquin Mir:
All I want is for my works to lighten the heart and flood the eyes and the soul with light.
