1929 "The Black Angels" were a courageous group of nurses who stepped in to care for tuberculosis patients at Sea View Hospital on Staten Island, New York. The patients there were mainly poor, immigrants or African American. By 1929 white nurse began leaving due to the grueling conditions, long commute times and high risk of infection. That's when African American nurses were recruited, especially from Southern states. The circumstances explain themselves.
