As a Hispanic coming from a Mexican background I've had bad experiences with white writers thinking it's okay to put BS stuff like, "happy Cinco de mayo." When they really don't know what the background to that was. Or "it's taco Tuesday and I'm about to head on over to this Mexican restaurant for some discounted tacos." I've heard so many Bs things about appropriating Mexican culture and I've stayed quiet and bit my tongue. It's ridiculous how they find nothing wrong with doing these things. As a minority, if we speak up we get bashed on. But If they speak up, oh no, it MUST be done.

i am going to say my peace here and hope other white writers listen: as a white person, you have to take accountability and understand that the system of the WORLD we live in that was taken over by other white people was built on white supremacy, every white person has profited off of white supremacy even if you’re in a marginalised group (ie: queer, disabled, ect) we as white people do not! have! to! deal! with! racism!!! we do not wake up every single day afraid for our lives bc of the color of our skin!! bandom SHOULD be a safe place for black writers & any poc who wants to rp, fellow white writers you have GOT to stop putting your white tears first. when a person of color approaches you, meeting them with aggression? anger? “not all white people wah” bullshit? all you’re doing is reinforcing white supremacy - and YES unlearning white supremacy also comes in the form of rp too!!! unlearning it is a daily thing, an hourly thing we as white people can not stop unlearning the system that was built by it. i’m so fucking floored that this community coddles white writers so intensely - why? for what? because political issues that revolve around the literal lives of writers of color upset you? because an issue with two black actors that we as white people had no business speaking on bugs you? why do black people and other poc have to hold your hand? white writers in order for this to fucking stop YOU have to do the work! The thing is if you’re a white person reading all of this and you truthfully know you are not the problem then you have no reason to feel offended. If you’re white and you know you’ve been very welcoming of POC and received them into this space with a willingness to listen and right your wrongs then none of this applies to you. POC aren’t trying to drive white writers out either. They’re not saying if you’re white you cannot roleplay in bandom anymore. They’re pros at co-existing alongside white writers by now. They’re actually not that desperate to fit into your white spaces anymore either. We’ve had to make peace with the fact that we are not wanted here and we’ve created our own spaces where we do feel safe with mods we trust. We also have white friends so we are very aware #not all whites. Just because we’ve made our peace it doesn’t mean we have to always be quiet either. There are times where we do wanna be heard because none of this is a recent development. Some of us have been here for years dealing with the same situations in different forms and contexts. The only real difference is that some of us are less docile and willing to let things slide after years of being secluded and disrespected.

Which brings me to my other point. This pattern of leaving one group for another group by conveniently blaming mods for all the disasters is pointless. The ongoing issue of isolating POC and disregarding their existence and concerns within the community doesn’t start with Fever and its mods and it won’t end there. They’re just the new fall guys in a long list of fall guys. Like Bandomslayed said the mods are accommodating the outlandish requests and demands of their members. Mods will continue to do that because they don’t want drama and all these anons prove why mods are obliging to these requests. White writers cannot take no for an answer and refuse to look at things from a different perspective. They’ve built this space for so long around prioritising their ignorant demands even when those requests and demands are rooted in racism or offensive to someone else’s existence. The issue with POC being unwelcome isn’t exclusive to a politics tag. Making mod notes or posts claiming how you’re not like the mods before in your brand new groups and boldly asserting you’re gonna create safe spaces for POC is meaningless when this issue runs deep and is the fault of the bandom community as a whole. Leaving one group for another isn’t gonna fix anything. Majority of the time they wouldn’t even leave these groups if there wasn’t any backlash to begin with. These writers only leave these groups for the sake of performative appearances so they assure themselves they’re not racist. When it comes down to having an actual conversation with POC or accommodating their needs or apologizing for a misstep we know how often white writers have responded with “I didn’t like your tone” “You were attacking me”. Pulling out of Fever doesn't mean a thing. Fever is not the issue and it never was the leading culprit. The issue is this community and the white writers in it who are quick to self victimize and dismiss anyone who tells them they're in the wrong. Saying you want to create safe spaces for POC is meaningless when you’re only willing to maybe facilitate POC if they hold your hand through it. If you really wanna make the space welcoming for POC stop putting your rage towards them in every instance and take collective responsibility.
