November
No sun â no moon! No morn â no noon â No dawn â no dusk â no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member â No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! â November

The village, east of highway five, huddles by the only railway tracks in fifty miles. One white grain elevator tells you where you are, from any direction. After four fires the place is still big enough to have the usual buildings: school, hall, station, hotel and two stores. Sunday evenings, a passenger train; Thursday, a freight. There are no factories here and no luxuries. On two sides there are hay fields and country; machinery and men sometimes move there. North of here is nothing. On Saturday night there are Indians sick in the pub and Crazy John sitting in the poolhall where he's sat for years watching the spinning balls, the young men, who knows what. Visitors soon discover there are some here who like what they have lived through. Mostly, there are young men who stand waiting with their hands made fists in pockets that are empty, young men who know that Winnipeg (200 miles south and not big enough for a place on the map of the world in the post office), that Winnipeg is where the world begins.

Our intent is all for your delight.
Space (âYou canât become playful, and therefore creative, if youâre under your usual pressures.â)
Time (âItâs not enough to create space; you have to create your space for a specific period of time.â)
Time (âGiving your mind as long as possible to come up with something original,â and learning to tolerate the discomfort of pondering time and indecision.)
Confidence (âNothing will stop you being creative so effectively as the fear of making a mistake.â)
Humor (âThe main evolutionary significance of humor is that it gets us from the closed mode to the open mode quicker than anything else.â)
Advice to Sink in Slowly: Designers Share Wisdom
My grandfather used to say: âLife is astonishingly short. Now, in my memory, it is so compressed that I can hardly understand, for example, how a young person can decide to ride to the next village without being afraid thatâapart from accidentsâeven the time allotted to a normal, happy life is far too short for such a journey.â
Franz Kafka, âThe Next Villageâ. This is the entire text of the story. Itâs really a fragment rescued by his friend Max Brod, but like many of these itâs usually published on its own. As a paragraph in a larger work it could be funny; as a standalone piece it is haunting. (via mrgan)
