Hi, i'm an old shameless head and for some reason I randomly decided I wanted to rewatch some of the Ian/Mickey scenes on youtube. I got to the 4x08 blowjob scene and oh man. I forgot how uncomfortable that was. Seeing Mickey so desperate really made me sad. Even though I love Ian, this was such a dick move. I don't think this was mania, it was bitterness at being rejected (in his mind) and a power play. 1/-

2/ I think he wanted to prove to Mickey and himself that no, he will not be following Mickey’s rules anymore. It’s his (ian’s) way or the highway. I hate that Mickey gave in to his demands, instead of standing up to him. It’s almost like being mentally ill doesn’t make you sexually coercive towards your boyfriend, but what would I know? The writers of the show can’t tell what consent looks like, and if anything “problematic” happens in their writing they’re just going to blame it on anything but the fact that the Gallagher family has been written in most recent years as entitled to getting what they want.

Ian was absolutely trying to exert power over Mickey, who did not even have the power to say “yes” or “no” to things he did and didn’t want half the time. There’s no way Mickey could have said “no” without incurring consequences that could lessen his quality of life. Ian’s house was a shelter for him from his abusive father. His relationship with Ian helped him distance himself from Svetlana.

Along with the coming out scene, Mickey saying “No, I’m not going to do that” would be one quick way to sentencing himself to a life under his father’s control, married to a woman who was used as a weapon to rape him, raising a child he did not want who is a constant reminder of his trauma. The only other choice would be to run away from it all, and he almost did before Ian came back.

It shouldn’t be Mickey’s job to stand up to him. A lot of people think of Mickey as someone who doesn’t take any shit from anyone, but then quickly forget that he has lived most of his life under the authority of an extremely controlling and violent man. It’s not the life he wants and he tries to take back what control he can over his own life, but it’s nearly impossible. They’ve shown us that.

Ian had just as much power to put up his own boundaries with Mickey, without putting Mickey into coercive and potentially life-threatening situations to get him to do what he wanted him to do. So, why didn’t he? It’s not because he was sick. It’s because he was spiteful over past wrongs and being that 99% of the “role models” he had were abusive, he literally just copied their behavior.

I think it’s worth noting that many like me, who are diagnosed with ASD now, would probably have been seen as just a bit odd in centuries past. I’m only a little bit autistic; I can pass for neurotypical for short periods if I work really hard at it. I have a lack of talent in social situations, and I’m prone to sensory overload or you might notice me stimming.

But here’s the thing: life is louder, brighter and more intense and confusing than it has ever been. I live on the edge of London and I rarely go into the centre of town because it’s too overwhelming. If I went back in time and lived on a farm somewhere, would anyone even notice there was anything odd about me? No police sirens, no crowded streets that go on for miles and miles, no flickery electric lights. Working on a farm has a clear routine. I’d be a badass at spinning cloth or churning butter because I find endless repetition soothing rather than boring.

I’m not trying to romanticise the past because I know it was hard, dirty work with a constant risk of premature death. I don’t actually want to be a 16th century farmer! What I’m saying is that disability exists in the context of the environment. Our environment isn’t making people autistic in the sense of some chemical causing brain damage. But we have created a modern environment which is hostile to autistic people in many ways, which effectively makes us more disabled. When you make people more disabled, you start to see more people struggling, failing at school because they’re overwhelmed, freaking out at the sound of electric hand dryers and so on. And suddenly it looks like there’s millions more autistic people than existed before.

i hate the bloody kiss gallavich scene. i like the gif, its beautiful, they’re beautiful. but what happened in that scenario ? was not okay. calling your partner a f*ggot and southside trash ( when they were getting better for you ) is not okay. none of the things ian did that was was abusive was okay. and he never apologized for them. so you can pull the scene where mickey beat ian up because he kept touching him after he asked him not to, had been breaking stuff, and yelling to get his attention, after he got r*ped but it doesn’t change that mickey spent an entire season apologizing and redeeming himself and ian never did.
