If you follow me or have just looked at my blog (as you obviously have) then yeah you’ll know that I love David Bowie. My thoughts on him are just that! I love him, I love his music and the way he speaks, his curiosity, his self expression, artistic flair etc. I wouldn’t say that I idolise him… like I don’t aspire to be like him and I don’t view him as a god or anything like that.
Is he problematic? Yeah he is in the way that anyone else is problematic but there is definitely shit floating around on tumblr about him which is mostly false and also really decontextualised.
I hope I’m not jumping to conclusions but I’m pretty sure that you are referring to the suspicions/accusations that he had sex with a 14 year old when he was in his 20s. I don’t know if that’s true or not. I’m going to preface this by saying that obviously I would never condone that or sweep it under the rug! It’s really gross and creepy. But I would also like to point out that the majority of 70s rockstars did have sex with young girls. Mick Jagger even sings about it as do many others. Not at all saying that makes it ok but i am a little confused as to why David in particular gets all the hate over it. The fact that so many of that crew slept with teenage girls, spoke openly about it and weren’t condemned by society really says something to me. It clearly wasn’t viewed the same way as it is now, by anyone. If society isn’t telling you how wrong it is, then why would you perceive it as such? Those rockstars possibly find it horrible now, now that the dominant view has changed
Ok furthermore…I think it’s fairly unlikely that David Bowie slept with this girl. His musicians and roadies have spoken about an incident in which a safety guard let a teenage girl into his room before david got back from a show bc he thought David would enjoy it (yuck) and David was apparently furious with the security guy and made the girl leave because of how young she was.
The girl who reckons she had sex with David bowie (Lori Maddox) has changed her story several times. And she has changed the year that it happened and her age each time. I’m not saying that this means she is lying but it is kind of shady? And she got her 15 minutes of fame from sleeping with Jimmy Page. Then decades later says it happened with David too? Idk I would take that with a grain of salt tbh. She did say tho how much she enjoyed it and when he died last year she posted about how devastated she was to lose her “old friend”. Also whenever I’ve tried to research it 90% of sources are tumblr blogs with no links or verifiable info…
Honestly my feelings on that accusation is that it could or couldn’t have happened and I don’t really feel the need to entertain the possibility that it did? It serves nothing to me. I would find it inappropriate and gross but sadly standard for the time period and for his status / figure at the time.
It kind of surprises me how much the social justice side of tumblr are keen to condemn him when he has done sooo much for gender and sexuality movements. The guy got a gun to his head for wearing a dress, he came out before homosexuality was legal in the US, his androgyny and bisexuality were so scandalous and groundbreaking at the time. He is considered an influence in the breakdown of the Berlin Wall, he called out MTV for their racism and he rallied alongside multiple marginalised communities. He did so much more good than harm.
