" Tell me if this helps. "
Halsin lifted a hand, a soothing, blue-green glow swirling between his fingers and around his palm. It hovered near the side of his head, and he let his magic reach out toward Maelis in a trickle. To hopefully soothe, rather than overwhelm. Knowing this particular ailment could not be caused by the parasite, as the others did not suffer so, he had an ounce of confidence that his ministrations might ease Maelis' pain.
And unfortunately, ease would likely be all he could manage. No matter how he searched for a source within the bard's skull, he could not root out a cause to actually heal. A baffling and frustrating realization, but if he could at least lessen the pain...
The ease was slight, barely noticeable, but noticeable enough that his hands slowed and settled in his hair. He forced a rhythm to his rattling breaths in an effort to slow the heartbeat that pounded against his skull.
"A little," he managed and cracked an eye open. The soothing sensation calmed him more than actually quelling the pain, but it was enough. His panic lessened, his body relaxed, and that helped to ease the rest of it to a point he could cope with it once more. His thoughts began to make sense of themselves again.
Silence hung in the air, save for their breathing and a few sniffles. He could still feel the tingle of Halsin's magic on his temple.
He chuckled wryly and wiped away a few lingering tears. "You... this is absurd. I just told you I did something awful. Why would you want to help me?"
ᒥ🕷ᒧ— "I'm," He gently brushed some of Maelis' hair from his face. "...I'm not sure I am the one best to speak on this." Maelis wasn't a soul like Rinnill's, he mourned those he killed. Rinnill had never mourned a life he'd taken, it had always been vital for his survival. "I think...I think you are making your atonement by facing what is inside you."
His hand moved down to rest over Maeli's warm chest, taking in his beating heart. "Following this is leading you on a good path. You can't undo what you've done, but you can bring good into the world to make up for it."
Maelis forced a breath into his aching chest. It would never be enough, he knew that. Nothing he could do would ever bring back those he took from this world.
But there was a single, terrifying truth in the path Rinnill spoke of. Maelis wouldn't call the path "good" by any measure of the imagination -- rather, it was necessary. That first night he woke up, the guilt and disgust overwhelming him, his rush of memory stopped on a single face:
Orin's.
No, he could not undo what's been done. The only way to move forward was to do everything he could to stop it from happening again. Terrified as he was, it wasn't simply fear of the pain that stayed his hand, it was a knowledge that he was responsible for eradicating the one who sought to continue his carnage.
"I'm a coward," he whispered. "I always have been, and... I-I'm sorry..."
Did he feel guilty for imposing? Yes, absolutely. Because he didn’t want to be a burden as that had consequences in the past. He didn’t think that Maelis was anything near his father and would make him pay for it. Caligo didn’t belief so, but they just met and he hadn’t forgotten his father’s words that Caligo would only anger anyone who got in contact with. But… he had to try?
“No, I don’t mind at all. I’m grateful for any spot really, even if it was the floor.” Giving a grin at the other.
When Maelis returned, he looked at the pillow and couldn’t help but smile at the stitching. There had been a time when it was an issue with him as well. Now the tips of his horns weren’t sharp enough or protruding enough to accidently rip through fabric. If one would look close enough at his horns, they could see that they’ve been filled to appear natural enough to avoid questioning, but too dull to really hurt someone. It was a punishment when Caligo tried to attack on of his father’s friends.
“I’ll work as hard as I can and get out of your hair.” He said with a light grin.
Maelis waved off Caligo's concerns. "Nonsense. You're a guest here. It would be hardly becoming of me as a host to throw you out into the mud." He returned the smile and started toward the stairs. "Do please remember to put out the candles before you sleep."
Once up in his room, he ran a hand through his hair and let out a deep sigh. Astarion's ghostly scolding had never stopped echoing in the back of his mind. He was right, he was too trusting, even when he had no reason to be. Who knew how many enemies Caligo had that might come looking for him?
Well, no changing it now. Hopefully the enchantment on his rapier would be enough to warn him of any coming danger.
Pomelia's face flushed red like a tomato making her bioluminescent blue freckles look as bright as stars twinkling in the night sky. It was a long shot, but she had hoped Maelis would buy her excuse and move on as usual but no such luck. She tried to stammer out other excuses, rambling excitably between nervous giggles as she shuffled through bottles of oils and lotions. Soon sweat started to form around her hairline making her fan her face. The words were just spilling out of her, and she started to feel a weird urge to just blurt out the truth building up like a shaken bottle of soda.
"Okay, I've never actually learned about any of that, so I don't actually know!" she confessed in a flustered whisper.
The minute the confession left her lips her stomach dropped to her feet. She could only sit there, too stunned to speak with wide, mortified eyes and her hands clapped over her mouth. She truly couldn't believe she had just admitted such a thing. No doubt the teasing would be endless, and gods help her if Maelis decided to share this fact with anyone else, she'd never be left alone about it. If it were possible, her face had only gotten redder.
Maelis' brows raised. He had a feeling Pomelia was one of two kinds -- either she was a freak and trying to hide it, or she was a complete novice and didn't want to admit it. Apparently, it was the latter.
"Oh come off it," he replied with a slight snort. "Don't go clutching your pearls any tighter than they are already, you'll break them."
Sliding down off the rock, he pushed a bottle of lotion away from the edge of the vanity and bent down to her level.
"Listen princess, everyone learns some day. Even the ones who don't do it know what it is. Easier to avoid that way." It was taking everything he had not to laugh. "But, just out of curiosity, what do you know?"

Halsin stood paralyzed between wanting to help and uncertainty if he should. He did not understand, could not, he supposed, when Maelis claimed whatever assailed him eluded explanation. He could not escape one desire, the need, perhaps, when he noted him wince. Not in reaction to his words, but in pain.
For that, Halsin could not remain idle. Part of the reason he walked the path of a druid was to ease the pain and suffering of others.
Stride certain, he shifted to Maelis's side. " Tell me where it hurts. " A soothing note wove itself into his tone, a healer's eyes scanning their patient. " I cannot begin to understand what you are going through, but perhaps I can ease the pain. "
Maelis' trembled beneath the druid's towering form. Out of fear, out of pain, he didn't know. He just wanted everything to be calm for once, for his mind to leave him in peace, for everything to not seem so loud, so bright, so much. But Halsin's words cut through the haze and his natural instinct for relief responded in turn.
"My head," he groaned softly. "Never stops hurting, it only gets worse." He rubbed his hands hard over his face, as if trying to wipe away the stabbing agony under his skin.
ᒥ🕷ᒧ— He urged Maelis to rest his head in the crook of his neck and held his head gentle with his hand. "Then don't," Perhaps that sounded too simple, too easy. But Rinnill often approached his decisions with a black or white mindset. There were two choices always presented, and one was right and one was wrong. Of course, the drow had proven time and time again his direct approach to his decision making caused folly on his part, but it had become habit before the parasite where survival was compromised of such decisions.
"I know what you are thinking, but it's not selfish to want to live. You've earned the right, just as you've earned the freedom we will fight for."
Maelis accepted the invitation and curled into Rinnill's embrace further. He just wanted to be small, to feel safe and loved and not like he was making a choice that would cost so many innocent people to die if he failed. But, at the very least, it was an if now, rather than a when.
"I can never atone for what I've done," he mumbled. "It still feels selfish... t-to want happiness, after... everything... taking happiness from so many others that deserved that much..."
Pomelia found herself glancing in the direction of their resident folk hero, Wyll. For her, it had been love at first sight. The way he had so heroically leapt into the fray to defend the Grove from a horde of goblins had her wanting to swoon into his arms like a damsel on the cover of a steamy romance novel. Lately the swarm of butterflies that had taken up residence in her tummy threw absolute fits whenever she thought of his face. This sudden rush of feelings was so overwhelming, she hardly knew what to do with herself.
Realistically she knew she couldn't have been staring for more than a few seconds, but she quickly averted her gaze when his mismatched eyes met hers, heart racing and her fuzzy goat ears fluttering. She silently cursed the appendages for being so expressive and constantly giving her away. With a small pout, she smoothed her ears back, futilely attempting to smother the flicks and flutters. She absolutely hated that Maelis seemed to know exactly how to push her buttons and fluster her beyond reason. Still, despite the fact that he never missed a chance to tease her, she liked this strange dynamic they had fallen into. The teasing and goofing around was the kind of stuff she wished she could've done with her brothers.
"I am a lady." she proclaimed regally, fluffing her curls before faltering slightly. "We're not supposed to talk about that kind of stuff..." she mumbled shyly, curling her hands close to her chest and habitually twisting her fingers.
Maelis had noticed her gaping like a fish at Wyll the moment they laid eyes on him, mostly because he'd had a similar feeling. Tall, dark, and handsome with a penchant for heroic dramatics? Maelis might as well have opened his tent to him then and there, were it not for Wyll's more traditional views of romance and intimacy. Much as that was something Maelis wished for in some capacity, it would never be in the cards for him. There were too many complications.
"Yes, a lady with needs," he retorted. "And says who? I don't see any of the other 'ladies' here following that rule."
True enough, the other women of the camp were just as open on the subject. Their language surrounding it might be different -- Shadowheart liked a bit of implication and innuendo, whereas Lae'zel preferred the blunt approach -- but the intention was always the same. There was little taboo around things within their circle of unlikely companions.
Broad shoulders eased, and he coaxed a scarred visage to soften. To wade through the swampy depths of his rising anger, of his fear for the safety of the rest of their group, of anyone around Maelis, he could endanger. Men, women, and children, most of which could not begin to fight off an attacker If he believed his tale, and he could find little reason not to, not when the tears he shed wet his cheeks in genuine guilt and horrified confusion, he truly did not control his actions when he butchered Alfira.
In cases he read about or experienced in his centuries as a healer, the scenario he described sounded like somnambulism. However, could a person perform such an atrocity in their sleep? The druid never experience such a grim tale but he knew better in a lifetime working with and as a healer himself, that did not suggest an impossibility. He learned quickly to always expect anomalies in medicine.
" Do the others know? " he asked, tone finding a better balance between his concern and calm. " What can we do to make sure this does not reoccur? I wish to help you, Maelis, if that is truly what you want, but I will need more information. Anything you know. "
There was that kindness again that made that terrible part of Maelis squirm in unsatisfied rage. That terrible voice screamed at him, and internally, he screamed back. His eyes squeezed shut in a vain attempt to assuage the pounding in his skull.
He nodded, a small motion to minimize the amount he had to move his head. A few deep breaths; he could push through.
"I don't know," he admitted and wiped away some of the tears. "I don't know what kind of help there is. I thought it was the tadpole, but the others don't..." He winced at a sharp spike at his temple. His tears began to fall for both the initial reason and from the pain that only seemed to be getting worse.

Pomelia cheeks grew warm before she cast a withering side eye in the other pink tiefling's direction, her nose crinkling at his teasing remark. Despite all the blood on her hands and sins crawling up her back, she still clung to her royal roots. A more wild, carefree, if a little unhinged side of her had begun to bloom on this journey to remove tadpoles from their skulls and yet there were still some habits she couldn't shake. Like the fact that she still preferred pretty dresses and jewelry made of sparkling gems. Or the fact that she still bathed as often as possible, partaking in nightly routines where she lathered her skin with lotions, oiled her curls, and dutifully brushed the tangles from her hair and fur like she had been doing when Maelis had come to talk.
But the one thing that always brought a furious blush to her face each time was everyone's openness when it came to discussing more intimate matters. Lewd jokes and innuendos were tossed around in casual conversation without anyone blinking an eye. Well, no one except Pomelia who was still harboring the mortifying truth that she was almost entirely clueless about all of that. She'd never even kissed anyone. Gods forbid if Maelis were to learn of such a thing, she'd never hear the end of it.
"I should think not." she huffed, continuing to comb rose oil through her rosy, pink ringlets, though now with a bit more vigor.
Maelis, like the rest of them, found such things easy to discuss. He felt no shame in his escapades most of the time, regardless of whether or not he felt shame surrounding his reasons for engaging in them. He'd much rather just focus on the pleasure he got from them.
Pomelia, on the other hand, was incredibly uptight about it from the very beginning. The first time Maelis made a joke of that nature, the color on Pomelia's face practically broke him. There was something about her that made playful annoyances particularly fun, and this had come to quickly be Maelis' favorite. Ironically, he didn't need to change much about his natural conversations to elicit the reactions he sometimes looked for.
"Oh please, you're terrible at hiding it," he continued and sat cross-legged on a boulder next to her makeshift vanity. "It would be one thing if you showed no interest at all, but you have so many tells you might as well wear a sign."
ᒥ🕷ᒧ— "I know who you are," Rinnill combed his fingers through the tiefling's midnight blue locks, his touch gentle, kind, and thoughtful. "You are Maelis Qezodar, a kind soul and creative mind. All he created you to be? You've proven time and time again that is not who you are. The fight is tiring--fighting the nature a God has instilled you with I know all too well...I find myself lost to Lolth's chaotic nature imbued in me from time to time, though I have been long removed from her domain."
The drow leaned back some from the other, allowing him the chance to gently brush his finger under the other's chin and raise his head so their gazes would connect. There is a gratefulness in Rinnills scarlet gaze as he speaks his next words. "I was ready to give in to the tiredness I felt just a some tendays ago. I told you this would be my last adventure, remember? But you joined me in fighting it, and for that I will forever be grateful. Allow me to fight your weariness with you, Maelis."
Something between a sob and a laugh escaped Maelis at Rinnill's description of him. He would like to be those things and tried to be, but it was impossible for him to deny the destruction wrought by his hand. Yet, Rinnill's words did soothe him. They were his hands, perhaps, but it was him who was fighting so hard to keep them still. He was enough his own man to be loved, to do good, to reject what his father and those who followed him insisted he be.
His watery eyes raised reluctantly with his chin. He remembered that night well, how his heart hurt thinking Rinnill had lived so much life and saw no point in it all. Everything still felt so new -- the grass against his skin, the glimmering night sky -- Maelis couldn't imagine not wanting to experience it. His breath rattled.
"I don't want to go..."

The confessions froze the blood in his veins, the unnatural chill of the Shadow Curse nearing warm in comparison, lips parting in silent answer and eyebrows lifting upward. The grief he experienced upon hearing the news of her gruesome slaughter gripped his heart once more. Though he only knew the bard mere days, even through her grief over the attack that befell the tiefling caravan on the road from Elturel, he could see the kindness and innocence in her, especially in the way she still did everything in her power to comfort the children. A woman who did not deserve an end such as the one that found her, and a group who did not deserve to lose another of their kin, especially now with their numbers further culled by this accursed land.
And now...now he knew exactly who murdered her. He stared him in the face. Laughed and fought and traveled with him as if nothing was amiss.
" I... " His voice rose barely above a whisper, the singular syllable all he could utter through a tightened throat. With his thoughts and emotions rushing with all the force of a mountain river after the spring melt. How did he address this? With anger, sadness, and confusion suited toward learning of what he could only define as a senseless slaying of an innocent life, based on his claims? With grace and consideration for the guilt and pain the violent deed caused him?
" I...do not understand, Maelis, " he attempted again, adopting the level and firm tone of the Archdruid position he so recently abandoned. Though, as he continued, the slightest hint of anger and disbelief burrowed into his tone, his frown deepening and his brows bowing downward over eyes growing steadily fiercer. " You do not know why? Was it just...senseless fun to you, then? A mindless act on your part with no consideration for the life you stole or the consequences of that? "
Maelis dug his nails into the arms tightening around him, holding himself together for all that it was worth.
"No, it wasn't... I didn't... I didn't want her to get hurt. She came to our camp that night to join us, and I was excited." A breathless laugh passed his lips, and he tasted salt on his tongue. "We spent hours playing together and swapping melodies. But we both got tired and I--"
The briefest memories of the terrors plaguing his unconscious mind threatened to steal his words. He pressed on.
"I have these awful nightmares, almost every night, and terrible headaches. I had one that night, worse than the others, and I woke standing... standing over her."
A sob broke through at the flood of grief and shame and guilt that haunted that brutal final sight of his fleeting friend.
"I didn't mean to, I-I don't know what happened, I don't know what's wrong with me!"
The suddenness of Maelis's rejection of his suggestion, lifted his scarred eyebrow once more. His explanation offered a modicum of clarity, but not enough to satisfy the druid. He trusted that Maelis did not want to see him or any of his companions hurt; that was not the crux of Halsin's issue with the statement. This endeavor placed each of them in danger from the start, and the Shadow Curse rotting this region heightened the likelihood of injury or worse greatly, as he explained to them ad nauseum. Thus, he could not surmise why the bard would trouble himself this much over Halsin's safety.
" I understand your concern. I do not wish to see any of us injured or hurt. I also know the reality is that it likely cannot be avoided entirely, but I plan to mitigate harm wherever possible for myself and the rest of you. That same voice that whispered to slaughter the sweet cleric just down the shore from their camp now snarled at Halsin's pleas and promises. That voice snaked through his body and gnawed at artery walls trying to force him to action, grab his blade, free the blood of others so it might be satisfied. He must, he must. The grin of the wretched little creature that visited him in the night rippled in the blackened water.

He couldn't be true to someone he didn't know. But, perhaps, he could be truthful.
"I killed Alfira," he said, barely audible. He hated dwelling on that night. Waking up and seeing her face, what was left of it... The fear and shame crept up on him, coiled around him. Tears dripped from his eyes. They stung like venom.
