Methodology:

On AO3, I went to the “Sherlock Holmes & Related Fandoms” tag. Then I filtered for the tags “Christmas” or “holiday”. I sorted those results by kudos, then weeded out the ones that didn’t actually appear to be Christmas/Winter Holiday fics, or to have a major Christmas element. (I also searched for “Hanukkah”, “Solstice”, and “Winter Solstice”, but there aren’t many fics with those tags.) The usual disclaimers for this sort of thing apply; data are malleable, so if you put in different qualifications (and versus or, for example) you’ll get slightly different results. (You should try it, especially if you want to find more than these twenty.) Stats are fun.

During a military campaign, Vlad the Impaler, the basis for Dracula, once pulled his troops out of a major engagement in a valley at dusk so that the sun was in their enemies’ eyes. Once they were over the hill, they set loose a bunch of rabid bats who flew away from the sun (towards the enemy) and attacked them, leading to significant infection in their ranks, and Vlad’s eventual victory. Because of how the bats appeared from where Vlad’s soldiers appeared to be at dusk, myth stated that the soldiers turned into bats at night, which is where the “Dracula can change into a bat” thing came from.

Amazing Transparent Church in Borgloon, Belgium

The architect group, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, built this church in Borgloon, Belgium. It doesn’t look like anything special… from certain angles. From other angles, the structure reveals itself to be something else entirely.It consists of 100 layers of stacked steel, that are equidistantly staggered in a way that illusively change in appearance based on where the viewer is standing.
