y’know that one Mushu scene in Mulan where he dramatically wakes up in all the smoke and is like I LIVEEE
that's how I feel now lol.
i underestimated how much completing my msc would take out of me, and then I had a whole slew of other things crop up (including a rather lovely bout of depression) that took me away from this. but I'm gonna do my best to get back into this, because it's satisfying for me and hopefully is helping some of you. no promises about consistency, though. welcome back aboard the hot mess express!
hello all! I am ridiculously tired and starting to stress about moving to Ireland in six weeks. omg.
by my count I have 16 more "chapters" for principles:cells. after that, I'm not sure what I'll do next, either basic chem I or principles: biodiversity. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually lol.
thank you all so much for being patient with me- and for generally being awesome. stay safe out there.
hi, i wanted to know if you had any biology reference books that you would recommend? i'm looking for some extra study material aside from my coursework. thank you <3
This is such an awesome question (and a great idea lol). There are a couple I like for biology:
The Biology Coloring Book, R. Griffin - This is like a reference coloring book. It has the info on one side and the pictures on the other side. I love to color so this is one of my favorites lol.
A Short Guide to Writing about Biology, J. Pechenik - If you want to learn more about reading and writing scientific articles/reports this is totally the book to go to!
Clinical Biology made Ridiculously Simple, M. Gladwin - this is a super awesome (and hilarious) intro to clinical bio.
The Tangled Bank, C. Zimmer - This isn't so much a reference book per se, but it's an awesome intro to evolution and evolutionary biology. It's designed to be for anyone, not just bio students, so there's not a ton of jargon to get through.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, R. Skloot - this is also more of a non-fiction book, but it's super important and I think all bio students need to know this story. Henrietta Lacks was a poor black woman whose cells were taken (without her knowledge) in 1951, and then became one of the most important tools used for understanding medicine/cancer bio. This is about the bioethics/experimentation on people of color that often took place and the repercussions we still see in science today. It's a very heavy, but important read.
I hope these are okay! These are just ones that I personally like, but there a ton more out there if anyone wants to add anything! - ailbhe
here's a little chart of some of the more common inherited disorders, this definitely is not a comprehensive list!
so it's been like an entire month and a half, but I am (somewhat) back. I'm going to try and get back on a semi-regular posting schedule while managing the full time work at the aquarium. so sorry for the wait, everyone!
I'd love chemistry notes from you :) i am good at bio but with chem it's a different thing 💀 I'd love organic chem notes I think you have some of them in your blog I'd check them .
that's so sweet! chem was definitely a struggle for me as well and I'm so glad to be done with it. I do have some orgo notes posted on my blog, I think under chem notes masterpost. I want to add more chem notes later!
I'm baaack! Here's the aforementioned RF example. The next topic is inherited disorders. If you're taking midterms, I know you'll rock them <3
hello all! i have a separate example for calculating recombination frequencies because they can be a little tricky and i needed more space. also, thank you for 300 followers!!! I never dreamed that I'd have that many people liking my notes - you all are awesome!
hello all! this is the last of mendelian genetics. also, I did a really shitty job of explaining probability, because I am terrible at math. Khan academy has a fantastic lesson on genetics and probability that I recommend you check out.
hello all! here's the final few of inheritance patters. please excuse my bunny drawings.
okay, so pedigree analysis is not my forte, so if you catch a mistake, let me know!
so very very late, but that's who I am. Here's part two of mendelian genetics. I have some separate pedigree examples that I'll post separate so you can use them for practice. happy learning!
hello all! I've been super hectic busy - the local high school unexpectedly asked me to take over tutoring for AP Bio and AP Chem, so I've been trying to figure out how to actually teach kids! also, I've discovered that I'm very uncool in the eyes of high schoolers. I have some notes almost ready to post.
hope you're all having a safe and wonderful time out there!

hello all! here's a quick intro to the original pea growing monk himself. I like how I said I'd be done with cells before Christmas and now it's February and I'm not even close. go me.
just in time for Valentine's Day - here's sexual reproduction! Yes, that's how I introduced this subject to my bio tutor group too. They didn't appreciate it very much
