A quick and easy recipe for Fruity Ice-Cubes For Dogs.

Anyone who has been following my Social Media in the last few days will know that Storm hasn’t been been to well. Earlier in the week Storm sliced his paws open chasing the ducks. After a trip to the vet he came away with Anti-Inflammatory medicine, cream for his feet and new born baby socks.

The socks where instead of a cone of shame, he has had to wear his socks for the past 5 days to stop him licking at his pads. And yes he is as annoyed with his socks as he looks!

  Storm did get used to his socks as time went on and his pads have started to heal really well. But on Saturday things took a turn for the worst.

I woke up to the sound of Storm retching, this is not the sound you want to hear at 8am on a Saturday morning.

Poor old Storm had been sick 5 times at what I can only imagine was the early hours of the morning. So straight away that put a stop to the show were were due to attend. Storm went on to be sick at least another 10 times.

I called the vet who could get us in at 5.15pm but after Storm couldn’t keep water down I called the vet again who saw him as an emergency case within 20 minutes of calling.

Poor Storm had an antibiotic injection for his temperature and another injection which was an anti-sickness.

We were advised by the vet that he would have go the rest of the day without food (Storm Loves food, this was hard) but she went on to tell us that on Sunday  he could start eating boiled chicken or fish.

Luckily we have woken up this morning and Storm seems a lot better, he hasn’t been sick again but he hasn’t really drank very much.

This is when I remembered I had made him some Fruity Ice-Cubes for Dogs!

The Fruity Ice-Cubes for Dogs are something I made last week in the hot weather we had and Storm I’m thinks they are delicious. Plus they get some fluid into him without him having to drink out of his bowl.

How to make Fruity Ice-Cubes for Dogs

What You Will Need:

Peanut Butter

Your dogs favourite Dog Friendly Fruit (Click here for a list of dog friendly Fruit)

Water

Ice-Cube Trays

Honey

How To Make Fruity Ice-Cubes For Dogs

This is a really simple and quick thing to do.

Put two spoonfuls of peanut butter in a microwavable container and microwave for 30 seconds

Add a spoon of honey to the peanut butter and mix together

Cut up your fruit into small chunks – I used Strawberries

Pop a piece of fruit in each of the Ice-Cube Trays

Then add a dollop of the peanut butter and honey mix to the fruit in the tray

Top the trays up with water

Put the trays in the Freezer – I froze Storms overnight

That is is – so simple and a really tasty treat for you dog and it doubles up as a way to get fluid into your dog when they are poorly.

Officially on Friday 23rd June, this is the day when you can take you dog into work, and in the process raise money for some great causes.

In 2015 and 2016 #BringYourDogToWorkDay trended on Twitter. The organisers of Bring Your Dog To Work Day are hoping the same will happen this year.

This is a genuine Annual Nationwide event which raises money for a number of charities.

It’s the fourth national event of its kind and is organised by HOWND®.

How do you Keep Your Dog Cool In The Sun? We have woken up today to see the sun blazing through the curtains, and the temperature at 23oC already.

So with a walk around another National Trust planned for today I really need to consider how to keep Storm cool.

Storm is the type of dog who loves to lye in the sun, to the point he gets so hot he will make himself sick! This isn’t ideal, but how to I stop him from doing it? The simple answer is I can’t, he is simply a sun baby.

However, as much as I can’t stop him from lying out in the sun there are a number of things I can do to help him keep cool in the sun. In this post I am going to talk about the things we use to cool Storm down so he can still enjoy the sun as safely as possible.

The Serious Bit

Firstly your dog can get Heatstroke. This is a serious matter and you need to know the signs and what to do.

When a dog gets too hot they can’t always lower their temperature by panting. If you suspect your dog or any other dog of Heatstroke then you need to immediately move them into the shade. Heatstroke can kill!

The RSPCA recommend the following if you suspect heatstroke in your dog:

For the best chance of survival, dogs suffering from heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature lowered gradually.

Move him/her to a shaded/cool area.

Immediately douse the dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. If possible, you can also use wet towels or place him/her in the breeze of a fan.

Allow the dog to drink small amounts of cool water.

Continue to douse the dog with cool water until his/her breathing starts to settle but never so much that he/she begins to shiver.

Once the dog is cool, take him/her to the nearest vet as a matter of urgency.

Now I have your attention lets have a look at the items which I use to keep Storm cool.

Cool Mat

I’ve got to say I love Storm’s Cool Mat, we bought it from Amazon and it goes everywhere with us. The Cool Mat doesn’t need to go in the fridge as it is filled with a non-toxic gel which cools your dog down when he lays down on it. Storm uses this in the car, in the house and in the garden. It does also fold up so we can put it in a backpack and take it out with us.

Paddling Pool

So as you know Storm loves to spend time in the garden, and getting him inside to have a drink is a nightmare, so we bought him a paddling pool! Yes you read that correctly, paddling pools are not just for kids they are great for the dog who loves water. We play games in the paddling pool, where we throw a biscuit in and Storm then goes bobbing for it. This works in two ways. Firstly he is getting a drink and secondly he is wet so the water cools hims down.

Water! Simple as

As simple as it sounds, your dog needs to drink. We have a Portable Water Bottle and Bowl which we take with us when we go out. the bottle is attached to a tray which is used as a water bowl. A really handy little contraption to have in your dog bag at all times. We do always take extra water though as on long walks this isn’t enough.

Ice Bandanna

I’m about to order Storm an Ice Bandanna. Its not always possible for me to take his cool mat out with us. The Ice Bandanna works the same way as the Cool Matt so again there is no freezing or chilling in the fridge. It contains a non-toxic gel to help cool the dog down.

Ice-Cream

So if you read my previous post Free Ice Cream For Dogs you will already know Storm is a sucker for an Ice Cream. Obviously don’t give your dog to much Ice-Cream but as a treat its a great way to cool them down and get some fluid in them.

  So there you have it, just a few ways we keep Storm cool when the sun is shining. There are lots of other ways to keep your dog cool, but I’m sure you now get the idea.

But on a final note, and this is a biggy. This is the one I bang on about time and time again, and it’s so simple

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A HOT CAR!

There is no fluffy way to put this, DOGS DIE IN HOT CARS that is the only way to say it. If you leave your dog in a hot car even if it is only for 10 minutes they can DIE.

Go back to the part of this post about heatstroke in dogs. Remember your dog is part of the family, do not put their lives in danger by leaving them in a hot car.

Exploring Haughmond Hill Shropshire, a visitors guide. Another weekend has passed, and hump day is here. So it’s time to reflect on last Saturdays walk around Haughmond Hill.

Part of the Forestry Commission England, Haughmond Hill is made up of 4 walking routes, and is accessible to everyone.

The Geo Trail and Corbett Trail are suitable for mobility scooters and buggies, where as Wilfred’s Walk and Henry’s Hike are longer walks and can be rocky.

More information on the different walking routes can be found here.

A normal walk for us doesn’t usually follow any of the routes suggested. We tend to just start wondering around until we get to the end. However if you do need a more structured walk you will find a map at the car-park.

Haughmond Hill is very dog friendly, you can let your dogs off the lead here. It is clearly sign posted when you need to put you dogs back on their leads. Dogs are required to be on a lead when you head back to the car-park. I assume this is more a safety reason, as in the Summer there can be a lot of cars around. The picture above also shows the walking trails which are colour coded. On the few occasions we have got lost around Haughmond Hill we stick to the Blue Footprint. I have no idea if this is a long or a short walk but it always gets us back to the car-park.

The Views…Oh The Views

There are some beautiful sites to be seen on Haughmond Hill including the views of the Shropshire Hills when you get to the top. As much as Haughmond Hill is classed as a hill, it is not a hard walk. You do not feel like you are walking uphill as the gradient is pretty low.

Haughmond Hill can be very muddy in the Autumn and Winter, you will need your wellies! However in the Spring and Summer the ground is dry and is very pleasant. We were not so lucky on Saturday, the three of us ended up very wet, and went home with a very muddy Storm.

Recently Haughmond Hill have developed the Gruffalo Spotters Trail. This is great if you have little ones with you on your walk.

From 1st April, follow clues and collect evidence as you search for the Gruffalo along the Gruffalo Spotters trail! Bring the characters to life before your eyes with The Gruffalo Spotter free app, or gather clues with an Evidence Kit.

Haughmond Hill is a fab day out with the dog and family, take a picnic and get an ice-cream from the cafe. Alternative take a stroll to the top and admire the stunning views across Shropshire.

Haughmond Hill is a working forest so you may see that tress have been cut down. But don’t worry, someone asked why this happens and the Forestry Commission gave this response

Haughmond Hill is a working forest which means the trees are planted as a crop and to be cut down. The timber goes to timber mills to produce wood products and fuel. Some of the Pine trees in the car park were suffering from a disease so we removed them earlier than planned. But don’t worry we are going to replace them this winter with fruiting trees which will be happier around the car park.

We recommend this walk to everyone, Storm loves being a free range dog here and gets into all sorts of mischief. So if you are coming to Shropshire any time soon, be sure to spend some time at this hidden gem.

Well it’s that time of year when the Summer Holidays are approaching and you want to go on holiday. But where and how do you take your dog with you? There is a simple answer to this, and that is Dog Friendly Cornwall.

Last year we decided to holiday in the UK, something which is unusual for us. But with a big holiday this year we decided to cut some costs. With this in mind we started looking for somewhere we could take Storm.

Cornwall kept popping up. We stumbled upon a lovely little farm cottage called Carnsew, based in St. Erth. This beautiful little converted stone barn is located roughly 6 miles from St. Ives, and is dog friendly.

With the cottage booked it was then time to start panicking, I am a self confessed worrier. I had never taken Storm on holiday before and had no idea where to start.

I spent hours online trying to work out the best and least stressful way to take Storm on the 6 hour journey.

My Top Tips For Taking Your Dog To Dog Friendly Cornwall

Take Your Dogs Bed

There is nothing more comforting than your own bed. That is the same for your dog. Your dogs bed is their safe haven, its their security blanket. I would suggest that even if the holiday cottage you book says they will provide a dog bed its best to take your own.

Pack Their Favourite Toys

I went a little overboard with this, and took the whole toy box. Storm changes his mind on toys depending on the day of the week. So we just took them all. Most of his toys were packed into the boot with a couple of his real favourites in the back of the car with him.

Don’t Forget The Food

This might sound obvious, but think about how long you are going for. Be sure to pack enough food for the duration of your holiday. I put storms food into portions, to save taking the whole 15kg bag. I also packed a couple of extra bags just in case.

Lots of Water

Our journey was a long one, and in August it was hot. We packed a 5 Litre bottle in the car so Storm could stay hydrated. I also packed a collapsible bowl, these are a god send.

Dog Treats

Every dog owner knows the real way to your dogs heart is with some really tasty treats. When your dog starts to get grumpy and you are stuck on the motorway, always have a little bribe to hand. Yes, OK this seems so obvious, but I’m sure you have been caught out before in the middle of a field without a poop bag. Can you imagine being in this situation when you have turned up at a service station?

Make Regular Stops

Even if you don’t take my advise on anything else I have written this one is imperative. Storm likes to stretch his legs every couple of hours. Its great for me because that means coffee. But all joking aside, your dog needs to be let out of the car. Service Stations are great there is always a grassy area to walk your dog. These days most service stations also have outside coffee and food vendors too so there is absolutely NO REASON AT ALL to leave your dog in a hot car!

Dog Friendly Cornwall My Final Thoughts

Dog Friendly Cornwall is a great place to go on holiday with your dog. You will find Dog Friendly cafe’s, coffee shops, and a host of other amenities where you can take your dog inside.

You can also take your dog on the Train and on local busses, however Park & Ride busses do not allow you dog on them.

Your dog can go on the train free of charge but must be kept on a lead or in a basket. The same applies for busses. Again this is just another example of how Dog Friendly Cornwall really is.

The only other advice I would give, is remember that your holiday is for you and your dog to enjoy. There are going to be new sounds and smells for your dog to get used to. They are going to be staying in a new place, give them time to adjust and explore.

Enjoy being with your dog and creating lots of memories, we sure did.

Great News! There is a Companion Dog Show in Shropshire very soon. On 24th June 2017  (10am until 5pm) Cuan Wildlife Companion Dog Show is happening.

Not only is it a dog show but it is the only day of the year which Cuan Wildlife open their doors to the public to take a peak inside.

This is a day not to be missed.

A Bit About Cuan Wildlife Rescue

“Cuan Wildlife is a wildlife rescue centre where we take in sick, injured or orphaned wild animals and birds. With the aim of nursing them back to health. We regularly admit over 2,500 animals and birds in one year. Once fully recovered , great emphasis is placed on returning them to the wild – in most cases, this means back to the area from where they came , where they may have a mate waiting, or where, at least, they will be familiar with their territory or hunting ground. Cuan Wildlife rescue is a registered Charity which is dependant on donations from the public and businesses.”

Storm’s Experience at the 2016 Cuan Wildlife Companion Dog Show

2016 was the first Companion Dog Show which Storm attended and it was this one. We had a fantastic day at the Cuan Wildlife Companion Dog Show. The atmosphere was lovely and the judging was fair.

Storm and I have been to other dog shows where he is over looked due to his breed, I used to get upset about that but it no longer bothers me as much, as I know he is a lovely boy.

After attending the Cuan Show in 2016 it got me thinking. I wanted Storm to become a Companion Dog, so that is now what he is. He has his paperwork from the Kennel Club to say he is my Companion.

In 2016 Storm placed in a few classes in 2016, and we can not wait to attend this year!
