One of the more interesting themes between Wilk and Tsurumi is how they both relate to the idea of beauty in strength. Wilk sees strength and beauty in the efficiency of Wolves, who act without unnecessary cruelty for the betterment of their packs.

Wilk, not wanting unnecessary bloodshed, changed his plans and wanted to create an independent state in Hokkaido vs. the Far Eastern Republic built on the mainland of Russia, which Sofia and Kiroranke fought for.

Marrying his wife and having Asirpa made him soft or rather changed the "pack" he was fighting for from grander Indigenous liberation to just Hokkaido.

So, he was killed for this weakness and slowing down the revolution.

Tsurumi masquerades as a savior for his division, caring deeply about how the government mistreated them while gleefully sacrificing his soldiers for his own goals. He also gorges himself on bloodshed regardless of who is dying. To Wilk, wolves are beautiful for their efficiency in killing for the common good; Tsurumi finds pleasure in the beauty of violence itself. Violence denotes beauty, not the other way around.

Wilk's Ainu name means catching up with Wolves, and while he did catch up for a short time, Wilk was never a wolf. But I don't think Tsurumi is a wolf per se. That's what others want him to be because that implies what he does is best for the division (his pack), which isn't true.
