REVIEW: DC’s Legends of Tomorrow S1

Legends of Tomorrow is definitely fun, though not without its far share of problems. If you look as deeply into Legends of Tomorrow’s plot holes and written issues, you’d find similarities to even the most highly of critically rated films. Legends of Tomorrow is undeniably fun as any comic book adaptation to fans of the graphics novels, and otherwise. (Keep reading for spoiler-free review)

Season 1 is interesting and fun and more about the characters than a lot of DC comics and shows, as if to show they finally learned from the 1960s Marvel comics that there’s more to superheroes than just being heroic; there’s humanity and strong relationships.

Perhaps it’s because I was under the influence of alcohol throughout most of the 16 episodes of the first season, but it loved the relationships that developed between the characters. Relationships that I could envy, as someone who never had such a deep relationship with anyone, as much as Firestorm had; Firestorm having a relationship as deep as becoming like Bert & Ernie (two straight males who were such close friends that life is terrible without one-another).

The cast of characters and the actors are strong in the series, including character added for the sake of the series (she never exited in comics), and I say this as someone who watched the Justice League cartoon as a kid. I mean who honestly gave a fuck about Hawkman when Hawkgirl was more entertaining and badass?

Arthur Darvill returns to the role of a time travelling character in a science fiction series, and he’s just as entertaining as ever. But the real award goes to Wentworth Miller for his portrayal of Captain Cold. Yes, Heat Wave is entertaining, as portrayed opposite of Captain Cold and acted by Dominic Purcell. But when Leonard Snart (Captain Cold) said “This is not my first prison break,” I just about died.

Much like every show in existence, some episodes are stronger than others. A particularly strong episode, and probably my favorite of the first season, would be the old west episode that has Jonah Hex as a guest.

You don’t feel the cast’s love for the characters as you feel when watching The Flash or Supergirl, but this series is definitely a fun ride, thus far.Though the story may not be compelling to some fans of the comics, it’s interesting enough to keep you coming back for more. After all, it’s not as long as the other shows in the Arroweverse, so what have you got to lose?

REVIEW: Supergirl - S1

Supergirl’s first season is possible the strongest, most entertaining, more beautifully written season of any show on the CW. I say this having watched Supernatural seasons 1-8, Arrow seasons 1-5, and The Flash seasons 1 and 2. Supergirl was some of the most fun I’d had next to both season of The Flash. The show knows it’s cheesy sometimes, and isn’t afraid to lean into it, but also isn’t afraid to use the source material as inspiration, instead of letting the source material instill fear in them to use another character’s source material (I’m looking at you, Arrow). The best way I can put it: Watch Supergirl’s first couple episodes, and if you aren’t hooked by episode 2 or 3, then you are a cold person, and are just dead inside. (Keep reading for a spoiler free review)

Yes, the final episode of Supergirl has been out for over 2 years now, but I feel it’s best not to spoil something as entertaining as this, when it’s a television show, considering not as many people watch television anymore.

Supergirl is in an alternate timeline, separate from Arrow, The Flash, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow; and this is perfect for newcomers to the Arrowverse. Though The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow basically need you to watch a few seasons of Arrow just to understand what the hell is happening and some details about the characters, Supergirl is all an entirely original series that isn’t afraid to be its own show, and this is much like the character herself.

If you don’t know the story of Supergirl: Kara is the older cousin of the Kryptonian that grew up to be Superman, but she left Krypton after Kal-El (Superman’s Kryptonian name), and the explosion threw her ship off course, thrusting her into a zone that separates itself from space and time. No time passes and the only way in is through certain wormholes. When Kara’s ship is nudged in the right direction and she winds up on Earth, as initially intended, Kal-El has become Clark Kent, and even become Superman. Superman hands Kara to a family he trusts, to raise her and teach her humanity. Kara grows up with a mother and a sister, but her foster father is taken away, trying to protect her. About 15-20 years go by and Kara uses little of her powers, to try staying hidden, letting Superman be the only known Kryptonian/Superperson. But with Metropolis being so far from her city, she can’t hide any longer and decides to become Supergirl.

The story in the show works similarly to this and it’s compelling and fun, with great characters. You meet characters that you’ll be familiar with if you know the comics. There are also other characters from other series, which is great because I never read a Supergirl comic, yet I’m familiar with one of my all-time favorite members of the Justice League. Though this is long before The Justice League of America forms. In fact, it’s better to just learn that by watching, trust me.

The actress who plays Supergirl is absolutely incredible. If you’ve seen Glee, she’s the one who gives Rachel a run for her money by being as good a singer as her and also being super cute (because, who am I kidding, girls are cute). My point is, that Melissa Benoist is so great in the role simply because her charisma, excitement to play the role, and love for the character, all shine through when she plays Kara. There’s some other great stars here too, but you’ll recognize their faces in seeing the show. 

It starts out being fun and building up to something and then just suddenly smacks you with more craziness that is literally out of this world... or rather, the world of that Earth.

Supergirl’s first season, from me, gets a final review of 4.5 out of 5 Kryptonian ships lost in The Phantom Zone.

REVIEW: Venom (2018 film)

A movie that had been in development hell for several years has finally been made. Is it everything that everyone hoped it would be? Or is it just another thing that took too long and the hype got too high for the project?

Venom definitely is a fun movie and has some good balance in its pacing and tone, yet somehow feels empty at points. A good blend of sci-fi horror and superhero movies of today (particularly in the MCU), this film feels like it initially was a screenplay written during the terrible Amazing Spider-Man film arc and altered over time by writers who seemed to realize what made the MCU such a strong series of films. Venom’s after credit sequence is a huge tease. In the end of the film, everyone presumes the Venom symbiote is dead, but only Eddie knows the truth, as he keeps his symbiote a secret. Eddie not only keeps Venom but gets his job back as a reporter and an exclusive interview with a San Quentin prisoner that requested an interview with Eddie Brock, specifically. Things are looking up for the duo, as Eddie gives Venom the chat about “No beating up anyone that isn’t a bad person, and if we have to eat anyone it can only be bad people.”

Then Eddie walks to a cell that sits in the center of a room, and a red-haired man in a straitjacket sits in the cell, dragging his bloody finger across the metal of the cell to write “Welcome Eddie” in blood. This man, played by none other than Woody Harrelson, turns out to be Cletus Kasady, an infamous serial killer. Kasady threatens that he will break out of prison, and when he does, “There will be carnage.”

This made me giggle with glee, because Carnage is my favorite Marvel villain simply for his outlandish insanity and being a wildly entertaining psycho of incredible power. I didn’t think that Harrelson could play the threatening, psychotic serial killer type character but from this short sequence alone, I see that I made a mistake in assuming such a thing because his short performance is chilling.

My theory is that Carnage will build up into becoming Sony’s answer to a character as built up and threatening as Thanos turned out to be in the MCU. But I could totally be wrong. Whatever the result, I’m excited to see a live-action Carnage.
