Reading classic European literature is always such a harrowing experience as a POC because there are always details in these novels that strike out to you that never really strike out to white readers.

In TCoMC, Edmond Dantès somehow manages to avert Monsieur Morrel’s downfall by rescuing his ship, which was full of indigo, the last business venture of a man desperate for anything to work. And it does work for Monsieur Morrel, by all means you should feel happy for him that this business with indigo from South Asia has worked out for him.

Later that very day, by sheer coincidence, my dad told me about how the Europeans (though speaking mainly in the British context since we are Bengali) tortured and murdered Bengali peasants to force them to grow indigo. It’s a horrific history that would later lead to a Bengali revolt against their European exploiters, in which they refused to grow indigo (“Indigo Revolt of 1859”).

Much as I’d like to wish good things for Monsieur Morrel, how can I cheer for a man who’s got a stake in a business I know was torturing, killing, and forcing the labour of MY people? The Indigo Revolt is still remembered in the folk memory of Bengal, as well as in our literature. It’s not all that long ago. Morrel’s success comes at the cost of the lives of so many of my people. And even if it were not my people, it still comes at the cost of so many people the story neglects to mention.

Soooooo like. If I wrote THE most self indulgent House & Chase fic ever. Where the premise is that Rowan Chase moves his family to Princeton when Chase is really young because he got a job there, and Chase basically grows up knowing House and House is basically dad-like to him because Rowan and Mrs. Chase SUCK. Would yall read that? Or would there be like. At least ONE reader other than myself? I need to investigate.

Never over House hauling Foreman and Cameron down to the NICU *twice* in Forever because that's where Chase is working and he wants to be sure to get him in on the case. Unlike Cameron and Foreman, Chase hasn't done anything to suggest he's leaving House forever for a new job, but House still has to go find him and read him in and make sure he's not trying to bail for good.

I...also love how in-the-way House is when he's telling Chase to "multi-task."
