Tonight (March 17 2021) in Atlanta, at least eight workers are dead after a series of targeted shootings in massage spas. The shooting is the latest in escalating Anti-Asian hate crimes, which have increased nearly 150% over the past year alone.

here is a gofundme link for elcias hernandez ortiz, who was shot but is currently in intensive care as i write this. he was the only survivor of this attack. his family will need help paying for the medical bills. (cnn includes this link in an article about the attack.)

Let’s talk about anti-Asian racism, erasure, and discrimination in online spaces.

(So, I actually wrote this a while back but never posted it here. In light of the recent events surrounding the shootings in Georgia, I thought it would be the right time to post this.)

The Internet is a weird and oftentimes wonderful place. It allows people from different countries, cultures, backgrounds to come together, communicate, and share interests. However, given that anyone anywhere can go online and join a community, sometimes unconscious biases/ignorance can spring to the forefront and lead to discrimination and prejudice.

What we’re going to talk about today is an all-too-common yet rarely talked about form of racism: anti-Asian bigotry.

“But Asians don’t experience racism! You guys are model minorities!”

No, that’s not true.

“Well, even if you experience racism… it’s not as bad as what other minorities go through!”

Let’s please not make “who experiences racism the most” a competition. Pitting minorities against one another does nothing except hurt people from vulnerable groups while simultaneously allowing those in power to avoid real responsibility for addressing racism.

I don’t think people realize how much of an impact this kind of support can have, I don’t think everyone knows what these little things can mean to us.

It may just be me, I don’t know. But every single time I see this on my dash or on someone’s blog or anywhere else, I kind of just breathe a sigh of relief. That’s one more person who cares. That’s one more person who doesn’t hate me.

Because it means so much, especially when all the media is spewing out is that I’m a terrible person and no one wants people like me near them. It means so much because I’m tired of people who won’t sit next to me in class, or who choose to join the longer line at the grocery store because they don’t want to be beside me and my family. It means so much when I have to lift my head any time someone says the words Islam or Muslim because I’m scared that they’ll say something that’ll hurt, when I have to pay attention to the news because who knows what so and so is saying now, who knows which of my people are being attacked now, who knows what’s going to happen to me now.

It means so much because I’ve been given the idea that the world is against me. And a huge part of it may be, but at least I’ve been reminded that some of it, just a small group of people, acknowledges that I’m a person too. That people like me are just that, people.

Maybe it’s just me, I don’t know. But now you do, so thank you for believing that I’m human when so many people don’t.

Everything from art, to fic, to video, to cosplay, to podfics –@despisydraws literally did some amazing Enjolras art on a piece of toast?? Like galaxy brain stuff right there.

@thepiecesofcait started an October Les Mis prompt list that SO MANY people  (off all mediums! Lots of fic!)  are participating in! Check out @themiserablesmonth to look at everyone’s stuff!

@alicedrawslesmis  started a Les Mis/Star Trek crossover comic @tomorrowcomes-comic  that is the gift that keeps on giving!

Recently @brickrenouveautions  happened (mod: @shitpostingfromthebarricade)where participants adapt scenes from the brick into a modern setting and it lead to some really awesome results.

@eirenical keeps a fandom calendar that shows all the event weeks coming up!  October has good ones!

“Master of the House,” Broadway, 2001. Nick Wyman as Thénardier, Betsy Joslyn as Mme. Thénardier.

Not the best quality video, but still a good performance.

Nick’s Thénardier might take a bit of getting used to, because both his humor ad his sliminess are fairly understated. Nor does he have the type of rough or brash character voice we so often hear in the role, but a clear and pleasant baritone. But this is valid, IMHO. When Thénardier is overtly slimy, you wonder why he has so many customers who like him. You wonder why Fantine ever trusted him. A pleasant, amiable facade makes it all the more understandable why he gets away with his dirty deeds.

Betsy’s Mme. T. also has a reasonably pleasant soprano voice, not the usual brash, loud mezzo (she’s probably the only Mme. T. whose best-known previous role was Johanna in Sweeney Todd), but she “compensates” nicely with her comically weary exasperation, bitterness and exuberant insults. Her cleavage-flaunting as she tries to flirt with the customer is a bit vulgar, but it’s funny too.

The ensemble is excellent, as are the small comic touches in the blocking: for example, Thénardier kissing each of the pretty girls, then almost kissing his wife, only to pull away in disgust when he realizes its her.

Well done.
