the ruler is hosting festivities in the capital while the nation collapses, and heretics have caused a schism in the catholic church. i love living in the middle ages.
Some pretty drinks I made the other day.
Soronoya
Ciro's Special
Looking for more drinks for my new creme de cassis, and this popped up. Blackstrap is an interesting spirit. An ill-defined category of rum, it's very hard to draw a firm line around it, but you know it when you taste it. And on the rare occasion that it's called for, nothing else will do. This drink forwarded a strange combination of the two.
1 1/2 oz blackstrap rum (Cruzan)
3/4 oz creme de cassis (Massenez)
3/4 oz lime juice (fresh)
1/6 oz Grand Marnier
Shake all ingredients with ice, strain, serve up.
I saw a lot of buzz on this one, and frankly I'm not sure what they're talking about. It's not bad by any means, but it's really just... blackstrap rum and creme de cassis standing in a room not talking to each other, ostensibly with lime and Grand Marnier somewhere nearby. And both of those are fine flavors that I enjoy, and they don't go poorly together, but they don't really interact in any interesting way. As I got further into it I started to get some pleasant acidity from the lime that made the drink livelier, but this one didn't live up to expectations overall.

"I’ve been to Mordor, but not through the mines."
See that picture above? That’s a close up of my great grandmother’s immigration papers when she first came to the US back in the early 20th century. But my great grandma’s information isn’t the important part here. The important part is that line in the middle there about how they arrived in the country.
And how ‘stowaway’ is a legitimate, valid option to select.
So yeah. They absolutely just showed up, and that part of immigration history needs to be talked about a lot more.
REMINDER THAT TRAVEL VISAS AS WE KNOW THEM TODAY WERE INVENTED IN THE 1930S TO KEEP JEWISH REFUGEES OUT OF COUNTRIES THAT DID NOT WANT AN ‘INFLUX’ OF THEM, THEREBY FACILITATING THEIR GENOCIDE :)))))
read What is A Refugee for more history. Educate yourselves.
Yup. Mom’s side of the family came in this way. Just...wrote their names down and that was that.
The link doesn't work anymore, but for anyone curious: What is A Refugee is a book by William Maley, and you can find it on other sites (just don't buy from Amazon, please) or ask in your library.
This Fourth of July, I ask that you support Native Hawaiian independence.
The Kingdom of Hawai’i was illegally overthrown with the help of American businessmen and we have suffered under the iron grip of America.
Our land is simply seen as a vacation spot, my people are simply seen as tour guides and hula dancers. We have had our culture, our history, and our people turned into a commercialized joke by America.
The rampant tourism kills our islands with endless hotels, attractions and overcrowding. The housing and living costs are out of control because of the false “paradise” narrative. The Navy poisons our water and destroys our land. Covid has killed so many of my people due to the reckless and selfish nature of tourists. I have lost loved ones to this virus, because tourists “couldn’t stay away”.
My people have suffered. I have suffered.
We are more than your vacation. We are more than an aesthetic.
We are a sovereign nation illegally occupied by the United States of America.
Restore Hawai’i to Hawaiians. End the American Occupation.
